Most of the north central Montana plains have already had wind chills drop to between -20 and -25 degrees F as winds start to pick up. Have therefore expanded the Wind Chill Advisory in effect until 3 am to include all the plains, expecting warming to lag a bit behind the increase in winds. Some areas may warm up a bit faster, but the bulk of the area should still see cold wind chills. Also, temperatures in Hill and Blaine Counties have fallen into the -20s, with 5 to 10 mph winds causing wind chills around -40F. Am expecting further lowering of wind chills overnight, so have upgraded the Advisory there to a Wind Chill Warning. Overall, temperatures are falling a bit faster than expected, so have lowered lows generally 5 to 10 degrees or so, but am still expecting gradual warming from the west overnight. Ground blizzard conditions are expected close to the Northern Rocky Mountain Front. Temperatures rise rapidly on Tuesday. A new round of snow will spread across the region from north to south later on Wednesday. && .AVIATION... Updated 2330Z. High pressure will continue mostly clear skies over the next 24 hours. Steepening pressure gradient will cause increased winds to develop overnight over much of north central Montana, and spread over all of north central Montana during the day on Tuesday. db && .HYDROLOGY... Ice jam flooding continues just north of Townsend on the Missouri River. Additional ice jams and resultant flooding are possible through the next several days. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 710 PM MST Mon Feb 12 2018/ 710 pm update...Web cameras are indicating blowing snow has already begun to significantly impact the Browning and Sweetgrass areas due to increasing westerly winds there. Have therefore started immediately the Blizzard Warning (Northern Rocky Mountain Front) and Winter Weather Advisories for blowing snow (Eastern Glacier, Eastern Pondera, Toole, and Liberty Counties). Not all areas of these counties are getting blowing snow now, but it should spread over most of these areas through midnight. Coulston Tonight through Thursday... Wind chill advisories continue tonight along the HiLine. Winds are generally light, but temperatures are expected to drop quickly under clear skies tonight. A few locations do maintain wind speeds above 10 mph, warranting the wind chill advisory. Surface pressure analyses reveal a lee-side trough developing along the Rocky Mountain Front. Winds will strengthen tonight in response to the increasing pressure gradient. Close to the Rocky Mountain Front, generally west of Highway 89, wind gusts could exceed 60 mph early Tuesday morning. Road crews have already been struggling to clear drifting snow in this area. With a deep snow pack in place, blowing snow is expected to create ground blizzard conditions, particularly impacting travel through rural routes. The Blizzard warning is posted through Tuesday with gradually increasing winds, but scouring snow and rapidly warmer temperatures could begin to inhibit the efficiency of blowing snow. Chinook winds will continue to spread across western portions of North-central Montana. A winter weather advisory is posted for blowing and drifting snow. Wind gusts are forecast to peak around 35 mph. This will be adequate to cause drifting snow across roads, with locally reductions in visibility due to blowing snow. Winds continue to strengthen through Tuesday evening, but blowing snow impacts will be mitigated by scouring and warmer temperatures. Attention then turns to the next winter weather system arriving through the PacNW. Expect snow to develop over the Northern Rockies late Tuesday night, with a strong frontal passage through North-central Montana developing during the day on Wednesday, advancing north to south. Snow accumulations of at least a few inches are expected. Snow continues through Wednesday night and tapers from north to south on Thursday. Winter weather headlines may be posted on subsequent shifts. PN Thursday night through Monday... A northwest flow aloft is expected Thursday night through Saturday morning with multiple embedded disturbances. In addition, strengthening surface winds are forecast on Friday into Saturday, especially along the Rocky Mountain Front, due in part to the strong flow aloft. This period will have to be monitored for potential high wind highlights. Later Saturday through Monday of next week look to feature another longwave trough aloft and embedded shortwave disturbances overspreading our area from the northwest. In addition, another Arctic front is progged to cross the CWA from north to south Saturday night into Sunday, allowing an overall weakening trend in surface winds to begin across the forecast area. The above pattern will cause primarily below-normal temperatures Thursday night to warm to near-normal Friday through Saturday. Thereafter, a return to below-normal readings should begin Saturday night.
