Issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Rocky Mountain Front and
mountain/plains interface. Models have trended higher with QPF
along this corridor, with a very favorable low-level upslope wind
signature indicated along with decent dynamics aloft. The one
limiting factor is moisture, which is not optimal but is better
than marginal.

.SYNOPSIS...

Periods of mainly light snow will affect North-Central and
Southwest Montana today into Monday morning. Fair weather will
then grace the area later Monday into Tuesday. However, a few
light snow showers may linger over Southwest Montana Monday
afternoon and evening. Below-normal temperatures today through
Monday night will be followed by near-normal high temperatures on
Tuesday.

.AVIATION...
Updated 1615Z.

Widespread MVFR/IFR conditions over the plains will gradually end
from north to south later this afternoon, while along the Rocky
Mountain Front and adjacent foothills IFR with occasional LIFR
conditions with total mountain obscurations should be expected
into the evening.

For Southwest MT, mountain-obscuring snow, with mainly MVFR/IFR
CIGS/VSBY, will overspread the region between about 20Z/Sun and
00Z/Mon. Conditions in Southwest MT should then begin to improve
gradually from the north after 08Z/Mon. CC/Jaszka

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 433 AM MST Sun Feb 11 2018/

Today through Tuesday...A shortwave trough of Arctic origin is
continuing to approach MT from the north. This disturbance will
cross our CWA this evening through Monday afternoon as it moves
southward and eventually southeastward. Behind this shortwave, a
high pressure ridge aloft will build over our region Monday evening
through Tuesday. Simultaneously, this ridge will be flattened by
another disturbance approaching from the Gulf of Alaska region. At
the surface, an Arctic front is crossing the Hi-Line and has already
passed through Cut Bank. This front will continue to traverse our
CWA from north to south this morning through early evening. Behind
this front, an Arctic high pressure ridge will settle over the area
this evening into Monday as the ridge slides southward and then
eastward. On Monday evening into Tuesday, a lee surface trough will
begin forming over our CWA and sharpen, causing the surface pressure
gradient to tighten and downslope winds to form/strengthen over
North-Central MT.

As for precipitation, the aforementioned Arctic front is expected to
deliver primarily light snow this morning into Monday morning, with
most or all snow falling behind the surface front. New snow
accumulations are expected to be an inch or less at lower
elevations, with 1-4 inches in the mountains. Impacts are also
expected to be minor with this snowfall, so decided not to issue any
winter weather advisories. Widespread fair weather is then expected
for our CWA later Monday into Tuesday. However, a few light snow
showers may linger over far-southern Southwest Montana Monday
afternoon and evening, with less than an inch of additional
accumulation expected. Temperatures will remain below-normal today
through Monday night. On Tuesday, high temperatures are expected to
rebound toward normal as the aforementioned high pressure ridge
aloft is accompanied by warmer air and Chinook winds affect many
locales.

Tuesday night through Saturday...main forecast concerns in the long
term remains the potential for strong winds Tuesday night and during
the morning hours on Wednesday, followed by the chance for
precipitation Wednesday afternoon/evening and into the day on
Thursday.

Models continue to indicate the potential for a period of strong
winds to start off the long term, especially along the Rocky
Mountain Front and onto the immediate plains west of Interstate 15.
H700 cross barrier flow of around 40-50kts along the Continental
Divide/Rocky Mountain Front Tuesday evening will increase to around
60-80kts by 12z Wednesday, before gradually decreasing into the
afternoon hours on Wednesday. NAEFS Standard Anomaly analysis for
H700 wind speeds over this timeframe and area indicate that these
values are generally running 1 to 2 standard deviations above
normal. At the surface, a lee-side surface trough continues to
sharpen into the overnight hours in response to a strengthening area
of low pressure moving across Central Canada. The pressure gradient
along the Continental Divide peaks late Tuesday evening/early
Wednesday, with values in excess of 100 microbars/km being noted.
BUFKIT sounding analysis for the Marias Pass region continues to
show strong stability at and above ridgetop level, which would be
ideal for the formation of mountain wave activity. Given these
anomalously strong winds, strong pressure gradient, and ridgetop
stability, confidence continues to increase that a period of strong
(and potentially High Wind criteria) winds will be observed Tuesday
night and Wednesday morning along the Rocky Mountain Front and over
the plains west of Interstate 15. These strong winds combined with
the antecedent snowpack, will pose the potential for significant
reductions in visibility should there be little to no crusting of
the top layer of snow. Breezy conditions are then expected to spread
out onto the remainder of the plains Wednesday morning, however,
confidence in these winds approaching High Wind Criteria is much
lower than along the Rocky Mountain Front. None-the-less, some
blowing/drifting of snow will be possible, especially in areas with
loose snow.

With regards to the potential for precipitation then.... Long range
models (ie GFS/Canadian/ECMWF) are in better agreement with the
overall track of the H500 shortwave Wednesday into Thursday,
however, the GFS remains the furthest north and fastest solution
(which would limit QPF amounts, especially across Southwest
Montana). Generally, the H500 shortwave over Southern British
Columbia is expected to dive southeast into/near the Great Basin by
Wednesday evening, which will help to spread synoptic lift over the
Northern Rockies region late Wednesday afternoon. At the surface, a
cold front will push from northwest to southeast across most of the
CWA Wednesday afternoon and into the morning hours on Thursday
(providing additional forcing). As the mid/upper level flow becomes
southwesterly, a limited amount of Pacific moisture (ie PWATs of
0.15" to 0.30") will gradually overspread the Northern Rockies.
Light precipitation in the form of snow is expected to develop
across most of the CWA Wednesday afternoon and persist into the
morning on Thursday, with generally light accumulations expected at
