...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 915 PM MDT
FOR NORTHWESTERN FERGUS AND SOUTHEASTERN CHOUTEAU COUNTIES...

At 859 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 8 miles south of
Geraldine, or 23 miles north of Stanford, moving east at 35 mph.

HAZARD...70 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect considerable 
         tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, 
         roofs, and outbuildings.

Locations impacted include...
Square Butte.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a
building.

Continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature's leading
killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to
be struck by lightning.

The storm which prompted the warning has weakened below severe
limits, and no longer poses an immediate threat to life or property.
Therefore, the warning will be allowed to expire.  However small
hail, gusty winds and heavy rain are still possible with this
thunderstorm.

...UPDATED AVIATION DISCUSSION...

.SYNOPSIS...

A strong pacific cold front will sweep east across the region this
evening and will be accompanied by scattered showers and
thunderstorms, especially this evening. Some storms could be
strong to severe, possibly producing damaging winds, large hail,
and brief heavy rain. The front will exit the area around
midnight, causing the showers and thunderstorms to decrease from
the west. A westerly flow aloft will then bring drier and cooler
conditions with breezy west winds for Tuesday through Wednesday.

.DISCUSSION...

Rest of Today and Tonight...a fairly vigorous upper level trough
continues to push east across BC this afternoon and evening with
associated Pacific cold front currently draped from NW Montana SW
into NE Oregon. Cumulus field just now beginning to initiate over
central Idaho should expand rapidly across SW MT over the next
few hrs with thunderstorms initiating over SW and W-central MT
late this afternoon and tracking NE across central and north-
central MT this evening. Dewpoints have fallen some today with
mixing but should still support enough instability to combine
with wind shear of around 40kts for organized thunderstorm
development this evening as storms track NE through central/north-
central MT. Greatest threat from these storms is likely to be
wind as unidirectional wind shear supports linear storm
organization as cells move NE into n-central MT this evening.
Hail threat is also there, especially with initial cells in the
early evening period. Wind shift to the west or northwest will
follow the frontal passage overnight with a few showers lingering
behind the front over far SW and eastern portions of the forecast

Tuesday through Monday...A westerly flow aloft will set up over
Montana Tuesday through Wednesday, bringing drier conditions and
breezy westerly winds. Temperatures will initially drop to
slightly below normal on Tuesday behind the front, but then
rebound to just above normal for Wednesday. A deep and slow-moving
low pressure trough will then move into the Pacific Northwest /
Northern Rockies / Northern Plains area for Thursday through
Monday, keeping a good chance of showers and thunderstorms over
the forecast area. As of this forecast cycle, the best chances
appear to be on Friday and Saturday. Heavy rain does not appear
to be likely at this time, but the situation will continue to be
monitored. Temperatures will likely cool to below normal at this
time as well.

Mainly VFR conditions will be found during the forecast
period...with the exception of any sites that receive an evening
or early overnight shower or thunderstorm. A cold front will move
from west to east this evening and tonight. This will bring
increased chances for showers and thunderstorms across most sites.
Some stronger storms are possible...mainly from KHLN to KGTF to
KLWT and northward to KHVR. Strong winds and hail are
possible...along with brief MVFR showers with any storms this
evening. Showers may then linger into the early overnight
hours...bringing brief MVFR conditions. VFR conditions then return
for Tuesday morning...and continue throughout the day. Gusty
winds may also develop by Tuesday afternoon...with gusts over 30

...SIGNIFICANT WEATHER ADVISORY FOR CENTRAL BROADWATER AND CENTRAL
MEAGHER COUNTIES UNTIL 915 PM MDT...

At 827 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 7
miles northeast of Townsend, moving northeast at 35 mph.

Half inch hail and winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with
this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Townsend, White Sulphur Springs, Fort Logan On The Smith River,
Newlan Creek Reservoir, Winston, Silos, Fort Logan and Goose Bay.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead
to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

If on or near Canyon Ferry Reservoir, get out of the water and move
indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to
10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you
are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter
now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.
