Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 235 PM EDT Mon Jun 25 2018 .SHORT TERM (Tonight - Tuesday)... Upper level ridging will remain over the southeastern U.S. and Florida through the period. At the surface the subtropical ridge axis now across the central Florida peninsula this afternoon will lift north to lie across the northern peninsula later tonight through early Tuesday. The ridge position will support a light southeast to southerly wind flow over the forecast area through the period with a very weak pressure pattern supporting an onshore sea breeze developing along the coast during the afternoon hours. Ample moisture (PW's in the 1.7 to 2+ inch range) combined with daytime heating will support shower and thunderstorm development along the sea breeze the remainder of the afternoon with a southeast steering flow favoring highest pops and best storm coverage along and to the west of the I-75 corridor during the late afternoon and early evening hours where the east and west coast sea breeze collision is expected. Similar to yesterday locally heavy rains with minor flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas will be possible as well as the ponding of water on roadways. In addition, frequent lightning strikes, strong gusty winds, and some small hail will accompany the storms. Tonight the convection will gradually wind down or shift west into the Gulf waters by mid evening with convective debris cloudiness thinning out with skies becoming partly cloudy overnight. It will be a warm and muggy night with low temperatures in the mid 70s inland areas, and upper 70s to around 80 along the coast. On Tuesday little overall change is expected. With the surface ridge axis to our north a light southeast to southerly wind flow with an onshore sea breeze component is again expected. Ample moisture and daytime heating will again support scattered to numerous showers and storms developing along the sea breeze and outflow boundaries during the afternoon with the best storm coverage and highest pops focusing along and to the east of the I-75 corridor during the late afternoon and early evening hours as the sea breeze boundary pushes a bit further inland compared to today in response to a weaker southeast flow. Typical summertime heat and humidity will continue on Tuesday with highs climbing to around 90 along the coast, and lower 90s inland with heat indices in the 100 to 105 degree range expected during the afternoon. .LONG TERM (Tuesday night - Monday)... In the upper levels, a fairly amplified pattern continues over the northern U.S. with a closed low moving through the Great Lakes region and ridging extending over the northeast U.S. Closer to Florida, the upper high sits over eastern Texas with ridging extending eastward along the northern gulf coast, over Florida, north of the Bahamas and back into the central gulf. The ridge axis will sit right over the nature coast. This will keep a light upper northeast through southeast wind flow over the region through Thursday. At that time, the upper low that was over the Great Lakes moves east and fills to a trough over New England. This trough will extend southwest into GA and slightly nudge the ridge southward over central Florida. The trough pushes east on Friday as a strong upper high sets up over the southeast and persists through Saturday. Models are indicating a weak tropical wave moving from east to west over Florida on Sunday, while the upper ridge holds strong over the mid-Atlantic region and New England through Monday. Moving down to the surface, strong high pressure sits off the New England coastline. An area of low pressure off the Carolina coastline extends a frontal boundary west- northwestward to another area of low pressure south of the Great Lakes. Any significant weather impacts associated with this front will stay well to the north, while the dominant weather feature over Florida will be high pressure east of the Bahamas extending westward into the Gulf of Mexico. While most of the effects of the front and associated troughing will remain well to our north, they will cause a slight shift in the ridge southward over southern Florida with another area of high pressure developing in the Gulf of Mexico by Thursday afternoon. A weak surface trough moves across southern Florida on Sunday into early Monday which will keep abundant moisture over the region, helping to keep moderate to high rain chances (40-70 percent) each afternoon through the weekend and into next week. PWAT values will remain high ranging from 1.75 - 2.10 inches through the long term period. Temperatures continue to be seasonal for the end of June. && .AVIATION... Developing SHRA/TSRA will bring brief MVFR/IFR cigs and vsbys to the terminals sites between 19-00Z and have included Tempo groups to cover this, otherwise VFR is expected during the next 24 hours. Southeast winds around 5 knots this afternoon will become southwest to west at 6 to 8 knots after 19Z at the coastal Taf sites as the sea breeze develops with gusts up to 30 knots possible in the vicinity of TSRA. Winds will become light and variable after 02Z tonight, becoming southeast to south at 4 to 6 knots after 14Z on Tuesday. && .MARINE... Surface high pressure across the central peninsula this afternoon will drift north to lie across the northern peninsula on Tuesday with light southeast to south winds and slight seas expected to continue over the Gulf waters with an onshore sea breeze component developing along the coast Tuesday afternoon. During Wednesday through Saturday the high will meander back south to lie across the south-central peninsula as a weakening frontal trough moves into the southeastern states. As the high drift back to the south a light southeast to southerly wind flow will continue across the far southern waters while a southwest to west flow will develop across the remainder of the waters with an enhanced onshore sea breeze component continuing to develop each afternoon. Wind and seas will be higher near scattered late afternoon and evening storms through Tuesday, and near scattered late night and early morning storms Wednesday through Saturday as the high sinks back south and the onshore flow develops, otherwise no headlines are expected through the period. && .FIRE WEATHER... Typical summertime heat and humidity will continue across the region through the remainder of the week with scattered to numerous sea breeze driven showers and storms expected each afternoon.
