...TWO SEPARATE STORMS TO IMPACT THE AREA THIS THANKSGIVING
WEEKEND...

.Two separate Pacific storm systems will impact Utah this
Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The first storm, crossing area 
today, will be the weaker of the two, producing mainly minor 
impacts. Valley rain and mountain snow will be heaviest during the
day, then decrease on this evening.

After a brief break in the weather tonight, snow will return to
the far northern Utah mountains and early Friday, then spread 
south and intensify Friday night through early Saturday. The 
period of heaviest snowfall will occur in the northern mountains 
Friday night while spreading into the central mountains early 
Saturday before weakening in place. There will be a brief burst of
snow for the Wasatch Front early Saturday morning that could 
produce some minor slushy accumulations to the valley floors.

.SYNOPSIS...An upper level trough over the eastern Pacific will
advance east into Utah on Thursday. A second colder trough will
move into the region from the northwest for late Friday through
Saturday. High pressure aloft will return late in the weekend.

.UPDATE...
No changes to the going forecast this morning. Today remain on
track to be an ideal travel day leading into the holiday weekend
with benign weather across the state. However, conditions will
deteriorate into the holiday weekend, with more details below.

.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 00Z SUNDAY)...The upper ridge that has resided
over the Great Basin of late will shift east of the area today,
allowing for southwesterly flow aloft to develop. Upstream, an upper
trough is noted across the eastern Pacific near 130W. High clouds
associated with this approaching trough has spread into central
Nevada and will make their way into Utah today.

Despite the increasing flow aloft, models indicate there will be
little support from the MSLP trends to help fully realize the winds
across the valleys. As a result, inversions, albeit shallower, are
expected to remain in place across the lower valleys through the
afternoon. A southeasterly gradient will start to develop tonight
and winds should increase a bit. The resulting increase in mixing,
along with thickening cloud cover, is expected to prevent overnight
mins in the valleys from falling as low as they have been in recent
nights.

The upstream trough will cross the area tomorrow morning through
early evening, weakening some as it moves inland. Due to its Pacific
origins, this trough will bring a moist and generally mild airmass
to the area. Despite its weakening trend, and the lack of a strong
consolidated cold front, widespread precipitation can be expected
given its moisture. All mountains are expected to see accumulating
snow, with greater amounts across the north. Most valleys above
around 5500ft will also likely see accumulations. Below that, things
get more tricky and will depend on precipitation intensity and how
quickly the colder valleys mix out. Current thinking is that the
Wasatch back, including the Ogden Valley, will see mostly snow with
2-4 inches of accumulation. The Cache Valley and the Wasatch Front
benches could also see a period of accumulating snow. Wet bulb zero
heights from BUFR soundings at LGU suggest mostly periods of rain
and rain/snow mix, except the normally colder NAM BUFR, which has it
mostly snow with some rain/snow mix. It is hard to imagine the Cache
Valley mixing out enough initially, so hedging a bit towards more
snow seems reasonable.

Enough cold air aloft will spread into the area to keep a few
showers and some orographic precipitation ongoing into the evening
hours tomorrow. After that, a brief lull in precipitation is
expected. Brief is the key word, as a weak ripple grazing far
northern Utah is expected to bring some additional precipitation to
the northern mountains and far northern valleys.

With moisture still in place, 700mb warm advection will begin in
earnest Friday morning, leading to precipitation to intensify across
northern Utah. Significant precipitation looks likely through the
day Friday across northern Utah, especially in areas favored in a
southwesterly flow, such as the northern Wasatch Mountains, Ogden
Valley, and Wasatch Front north of I-80. Snow levels are expected to
remain generally on the high side. However, higher precipitation
rates could still result in a more isothermal profile and lower snow
levels locally to the valley floors at times.

Another trough is expected to dive into the area from the northwest
late Friday night into Saturday. With colder air and good dynamics,
this storm is expected to produce widespread precipitation,
accumulating snow to most valley floors, and gusty winds.
Frontogenetic forcing, especially across northern and central Utah,
and jet core punching into northwest through east-central Utah will
provide good lift for the northern half of the forecast area.
Southern Utah will still see a good cold front and will not be
completely left out, but northern Utah will likely see the greatest
amounts of precipitation with high precip rates. However, the cold
front will be moving quickly, so it will be relatively short-lived.
Heights and 500mb temperatures are progged to rise quickly by 00z
Sunday, so not expecting to see a good period of lingering
instability behind the front.

.LONG TERM (After 00Z Sunday)...Behind the exiting trough, global
models indicate that a drier and more stable northwest flow will
develop beginning Sunday on the front side of a ridge off the
Pacific coast. The ridge is progged to track east, eventually moving
overhead by Tuesday and east of the area by Wednesday. The ridge
will bring a drier and more stable airmass, allowing valley
inversions to develop. With the ridge moving away from the area,
there are some indications that a more active pattern will develop
behind it after day seven.

.AVIATION...Operational weather concerns will remain minimal at the
KSLC terminal through this evening. Calm or light southeasterly
winds will trend to northwest at light speeds after 19-20Z. Wind
shift to southeast is expected at 03Z tonight. CIGS will lower to 6K
ft AGL or lower after about 10-12Z Thursday with rain developing
after about 15Z.

Snow is expected over the mountains as well as the higher valleys

time. Periods of snow with minor accumulations can also be expected
in the valleys of far northern Utah.

A colder storm Friday night into Saturday will drop snow levels
to the valleys floors. Accumulating snow is expected for much of
northern and central Utah, with the mountains possibly seeing
