.DISCUSSION...A longwave trough encompasses the eastern
Pacific/Pacific Coast this morning, anchored around a deep upper
low spinning just off the British Columbia coastline. A weak
shortwave trough coupled with a plume of moisture/thermal
advection is currently ejecting from the mean longwave position
across the Great Basin, and will cross the forecast area later
this morning through this afternoon. This will bring a round of
snow to the higher terrain of central and northern Utah, while
valleys favored in southwesterly flow such as the northern
Wasatch, Ogden Valley, Cache Valley, etc will likely see a period
of light snow possibly changing over to rain as temperatures
aloft warm, while valleys such as Salt Lake and Tooele will are
less likely to see precipitation due to downsloping. Updated the
going forecast to increase PoPs across the central mountains and
Wasatch Plateau beginning later this morning and continuing
through the afternoon, where hi-res guidance is focusing the
heaviest precip.
Attention then turns to the upstream trough and associated cold
front which will impact the region beginning Friday, and continuing
through the upcoming weekend. Questions remain regarding where the
low level baroclinic zone will stall across northern Utah, and
this will have a significant impact in timing and amount of
snowfall Friday afternoon through Friday night. Confidence remains
high locations north of I-80 will be impacted, while considerable
uncertainty remains regarding the central and southern Wasatch
Front. The main trough axis is still expected to swing through the
region later Saturday through Saturday night brining widespread
snowfall to locations south of I-80. Will await the entire 12Z
suite of models before making any decisions on adjusting
headlines, and will also need to address strengthening southerly
pre-frontal winds tonight into Friday.

.AVIATION...Increasing southerly surface winds at the KSLC
terminal are expected to ramp up today. Gusty conditions
developing after 18/19z, and a 40% chance that wind speeds will
reach or just exceed 30mph during the afternoon hours. Winds are
then expected to settle during the overnight hours slightly before
ramping up again after 12z Friday. Cigs are expected to lower
this afternoon as well, with borderline MVFR levels developing
along with a 40% chance of light showers this afternoon.

Minimal if any travel impacts expected. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday A strong storm system will move into the Pacific Northwest tonight, then expand east across much of the western United States for Friday through the weekend. Gusty south winds will develop across western Utah late tonight into Friday afternoon ahead of a cold front scheduled to arrive over northwest Utah early Friday. This rather large winter storm will impact much of the outlook area Friday morning and through the weekend. Mountain locations can expect heavy snow accumulations, especially across the northern and central mountains. Valley locations, with the exception of Utah's Dixie and the lower eastern valleys, will also see accumulating snows.
