The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a Fire
Weather Watch for wind and low relative humidity, which is in
effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening. A red flag
warning remains in effect for the area through 9 PM Sunday
evening.

* AFFECTED AREA...Fire Weather Zone 492 Central Utah West Desert 
  and Fire Weather Zone 495 Color Country West Desert.

* WINDS...South 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph through this
  evening. Locally gusty winds are possible Monday afternoon and
  evening. Another round of southerly winds 15 to 25 mph with
  gusts to 35 mph are possible Tuesday afternoon and evening.

* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 9 percent.

* IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will have the potential to 
  spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now...or are imminent. A combination of
strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.

A Fire Weather Watch means that there is a potential for critical
fire weather conditions. Continue to monitor for the latest
forecasts and for possible Red Flag Warnings.

.SYNOPSIS....A warm, dry, and breezy southwest flow will persist
through the weekend and into early next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...The amplified long wave trough oriented along the
west coast (notable in H5 analysis) coupled with high pressure
over the southern plains continues to drive enhanced southwesterly
flow aloft across the eastern Great Basin today. The trough is
currently in the process of reloading as a short wave noted near
35N/135W is showing signs of kicking downstream as the next short
wave embedded deepens off the BritCol coast. Downstream
translation of the former will be the primary focus in the short
term period as it remains poised to progressively lift northeast
across Nevada and into Idaho Saturday.

In advance of this, do expect subtle height rises across northern
portions of the area today, and further weakening of the S-N MSLP
gradient across the western valleys as the surface trough over
northwestern Utah is poised to largely wash out. Though still
breezy, the winds across the western valleys/mtns will be a bit
lower this afternoon vs 24 hrs previous. A temporary reduction at
best.

Will be keying in on a resultant uptick of winds/temps in advance
of the kicking trough for tomorrow. Redevelopment and
strengthening of the surface trough across the northwest and a
rapid increase of H7 flow look likely to produce advisory level
winds across the west desert, while further enhancing fire weather
concerns areawide.

Going forecast remains on track. No updates needed this morning.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...The approaching wave also draws up moisture
into Utah from Arizona Saturday. This trend continues Sunday as
ridging develops south of the Four corners.

SREF guidance shows enough destabilization to potentially support
convection Saturday and especially Sunday. However, flow is quite
strong and would inhibit terrain circulations. Kept PoPs below
mentionable levels for now.

Another period of potential precipitation is Saturday night
across the north as the wave lifts into Idaho. Height falls and
cooling aloft are maximized during this period. However, not
enough in the guidance to mention precipitation at this point.

The EC and GFS remain in good agreement through Wednesday with a
dry and warm southwest flow prevailing. Wednesday will likely be a
windy day as both models show the trough ejecting eastward.
However, the EC brings the longwave in its entirety across Utah
while the GFS ejects a portion of the trough NE into the Northern
Rockies as energy drops southward into the western portion of the
longwave trough. The EC solution is a few degrees cooler than the
GFS by Thursday as the 700mb is west northwest, while the GFS is
developing another trough along the west coast which will cause
the 700mb winds to turn southwest and increase already. Have
played middle of the road approach beyond Wednesday as both
scenarios have support, although believe the GFS warrants more
support based on recent weather pattern.

.AVIATION...The winds at the KSLC terminal should become southerly
shortly with periodic gusts up to 20 kts possible this afternoon. A
northern shift is expected between 19-21Z, however, there is a 40%
chance of the winds remaining out of the south through the evening.
Arrivals from of the SW gate could be impacted by a large wildfire
smoke plume southwest of PVU.

.FIRE WEATHER...
ERC values are running close to the 97th percentile across
northern and west central Utah, closer to the 50th-69th percentile
across the southwest. ERCs have been trending higher during the
past several days.

Gusty southwest winds and single digit RH values will continue
across much of Utah into the weekend. A cold front across northern
Utah will lift north of the region this afternoon. Areas north of
the boundary will be cooler, a bit more humid, with a lighter
northwest flow this morning.

A warming trend is forecast through Saturday. RH will trend
higher a bit Saturday through Monday, before falling again.
Isolated convection is not out of the question this weekend,
especially Sunday.

Gusty southwest winds and low RH will persist across portions of
the region next week. Critical fire weather conditions look to
continue at least locally through mid week.
