.SYNOPSIS....A low pressure system off the British Columbia
coast will generate an increasingly strong, dry and warm southwest
flow across Utah as it approaches the Pacific Northwest through the
middle of the week.

the week due to strong SW winds and low RH
Antecedent Conditions...
Exceptional Drought is occurring centered across San Pete county
and near the Four corners. Extreme drought continues across the
remainder of central and eastern Utah, with Severe drought along
the I-15 and Highway 40 corridors. Drought conditions scale down
to Moderate Drought along the Nevada, Idaho and Wyoming borders.
Big Picture...
During the past 5 days, the pattern has amplified across the
Pacific with a closed low south of the Gulf of Alaska and a ridge
off of southern California into the Southwest CONUS.
MDCARS aircraft observations places a westerly 75-120kt jet
across the Pacific northwest into southwest Canada. A weaker
anticyclonic jet extends from northern California into the Four
Corners.
Local Observations...
12Z KSLC RAOB shows a well mixed dry layer above the nocturnal
inversion to about 500mb, with several weak inversions above
500mb. The column is very dry except for some upper level
saturation. Winds are veering and increasing with height,
indicative of warm advection.
Precipitable Water values range from 0.15"-0.30" northern mountains
to 0.45"-0.65" most valleys.
A 1004mb surface cyclone resides south of Wendover with a 1012mb
surface anticyclone in southwest Colorado. This is creating a 4mb
southeasterly pressure gradient Utah. 850-700mb Saturated
Equivalent Potential Temperature/Streamlines suggest the frontal
boundary across central Utah is becoming diffuse.

northern Utah
Forecast...
Smoke has wafted into western and northern Utah as well as
southwest Wyoming with the passage of the cold front late
Saturday. HRRR smoke model continues to show conditions improving
through the day as the aforementioned boundary diminishes and
southerly flow increases across the state.
Experimental CIRA Advective Precipitable Water shows weak
moistening (most predominate in the 700-500mb layer) near the
Four Corners.
SREF indicates weak destabilization today along and east of the
spine of the mountains. However, FV3 BUFKIT forecast soundings
indicate any convection will be shallow due to building subsidence
inversions and warming aloft. With Convective Allowing Models
showing minimal development, kept with a dry forecast. Some build-
ups are still expected.
Went above best performing bias corrected temperature guidance
today as a warming southwest flow develops. Updated the T/RH
curve based on latest observations and model data.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
A weak ripple in the westerlies continues to cross Utah early
this morning, resulting in patchy high clouds across the area.
After this wave passes, a dry southwesterly flow aloft will then
develop this afternoon and settle into the area through late week
as a mean trough sets up near the West Coast.
The southwest flow is expected to increase for tomorrow through at
least Thursday, leading to breezy conditions, as the upstream trough
amplifies and moves closer to the area. Weak embedded shortwaves
will eject out of the trough through the week. Warmer temperatures
can be expected across northern Utah today. However, each successive
ejecting shortwave disturbance will push a weak cold front into the
area, resulting in a gradual cooling trend.
The global models are in good agreement through early Friday then
they diverge. The 12Z EC ensemble showed the southern end of the
eastern Pacific trough to remain well off the coast while ejecting
the northern branch trough inland across the northern Great Basin
and Northern Rockies through the weekend. The latest EC
operational run has followed suit so have leaned toward this
solution. While no precip is expected in this pattern the
temperatures were adjusted downward by 1-4 degrees from Friday
night through Sunday morning. Further lowering of temps may need
to be considered if the all the models tend to converge on this
idea.

.AVIATION...
No significant operational weather impacts are expected at the
KSLC terminal over the next 24 hours. A light southeast wind will
be overtaken by a northerly wind between 19-20Z this afternoon.
Scattered upper level clouds will allow VFR conditions to persist
through the valid TAF period.

ERC values are running between the 80th and 96th percentile
across northern Utah, trending closer to the 50th percentile
across the south. ERCs have been increasing during the past
several days.
Locally critical fire weather conditions are possible for the
remainder of today due to low RH and breezy conditions, a bit more
widespread across the northern Wasatch mountains and valleys.
A trough will develop near the West Coast this week which will
set up a dry and gusty southwest flow across the region, becoming
widespread by tomorrow. This is the next opportunity for
widespread fire weather concerns, which is expected to persist at
least through Thursday, perhaps through next weekend at some
locations. A cold front looks to settle into northwest Utah mid
week, which could lessen the fire weather threat across far
northwest Utah. This boundary will likely stall and lift north out
of the state Friday.
Single digit RH is expected during this period, with poor overnight
RH recovery. No precipitation is in the forecast this week.
