increase in coverage along and behind the front, transitioning to

DISCUSSION...
Water vapor imagery shows a broad trough of low pressure over the
eastern half of the U.S. this evening, with the next system to
affect us, starting to dig down the back side of this trough. For
now though, skies are mostly clear, with just a few high clouds
moving through the northwesterly flow aloft. Temperatures this
evening are dropping a little quicker than our forecast, so have
updated the hourly temperatures and dew points to be more in line
with the current trends. Also lowered temps a bit for tonight,
given the predominately clear skies, light winds, and dew points
in the upper teens and 20s. Although dry and warmer conditions
will prevail across the region on Monday, things will quickly
deteriorate Monday evening and during the overnight hours, as this
next system takes aim at our region.

Our primary concern for this forecast remains with the
possibility of winter weather on Monday night and Tuesday. All of
the models are in good agreement that significantly colder air
will quickly spread across the the ArkLaTex Monday night and
Tuesday morning, while there is still plenty of moisture in place
across the region. Therefore, there is high confidence that any
rain will quickly transition to snow. However, cannot rule out a
brief period of a wintry mix. Profiles are more suggestive of
sleet than freezing rain, but we will have to wait and see if
these trends continue. At this point in time, believe that all
areas will likely see some snow either late Monday night into
Tuesday, and that advisories will likely be needed, with 1 to 3
inches of snow not out of the question. The question is whether or
not we will need a Winter Storm Warning for portions of the area?
Although the current forecast amounts are either below or just
borderline for a warning, believe that the impacts may warrant a
warning, given the timing of the snow band in conjunction with
the Tuesday morning commute. In fact, the Tuesday morning commute
may be quite treacherous. For now, will keep our watch in place,
and see if the later model runs continue to trend in this
direction.

As this precipitation moves out of the region late Tuesday, drier
conditions will develop. However, the very cold air will remain
in place, with overnight temperatures dropping significantly
Tuesday night and again into Wednesday night. Believe that snow
will still be on the ground at this time (at least Tuesday night
and probably in places on Wednesday night), and our area may see
another round of hard freezes this season, with temperatures
falling into the teens these nights. Palmer

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of south central
Arkansas, southwest Arkansas, north central Louisiana, northwest
Louisiana, southeast Oklahoma, east Texas and northeast Texas.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight...

No hazardous weather is expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday...

After another cold start on Monday, we will see a bit of a warm
up during the afternoon. However, another Arctic cold front will
arrive by sunset. Air temperatures will begin falling to below
freezing during the evening and overnight hours for much of the
area between midnight and daybreak Tuesday. Rainfall will quickly
transition to freezing rain, sleet and then all snow from north
to south across much of the area. The precipitation will gradually
come to an end by mid to late day on Tuesday. The approach of the
cold air from the north compared to northwest will make for a much
faster transition from rain to snow. Some minor ice accumulations
may occur in east Texas as the cold air will remain shallow there
for a bit longer. However, patchy ice underneath the snow will be
possible for all elevated surfaces across the area and travel may
become problematic through Tuesday with refreezing of any elevated
surfaces possible Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.

Later in the week we will see a system along the Gulf coast which
may bring a brief mix of precipitation to our southernmost areas,
but warmer temperatures will limit the duration of such an event.
The even warmer weekend will see a potential rain soaker develop
for much of the area.

Activation of emergency managers, skywarn networks, and amateur
radio operators will not be needed through tonight.
