Rain has ended for all but the MLU/LFK terminals for this TAF package with the rain ending at the MLU terminal over the next couple hours. Cold front has pushed through all terminal locations with NNW winds sustained near 10kts with a few higher gusts. Cannot rule out some additional showers at the LFK terminal by late morning/afternoon with the passage of the upper trough axis. Post frontal ceilings are mostly IFR with some intermittent LIFR ceilings with skies improving to VFR conditions from west to east by afternoon into the evening hours. Winds will decouple this evening as they veer around to the northeast with speeds near 5kts. 13 && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 405 AM CST Wed Feb 7 2018/ DISCUSSION... The progression of the surface cold front is clearly marked by a broken line of robust convection that extends from the Upper Texas Coast, through Central Louisiana and Mississippi and into Alabama. Closer to our area, at 0930z, the front was roughly located from near Leesville LA, to Colfax LA, to Delhi LA. I cannot rule out some hail with these storms due to steep mid-level lapse rates ahead of the front. A couple of storms ahead of the front have managed to become surfaced-based. Latest mesoanalysis indicates that 0-1 km SRH values of 200-350 m2/s2 have developed in East Central Louisiana. Therefore, there will be a threat for isolated tornadoes in Grant and La Salle Parishes for the next couple of hours. In the post-frontal airmass, a large area of elevated showers and isolated thunderstorms continue to move east across portions of Southern Arkansas, much of Louisiana, and portions of East Texas south of Interstate 20. Latest high-res guidance, including the HRRR and the NAM, suggest the rain will quickly exit the area by 15z this morning. Given estimated storm motions around 50 kts, this seems reasonable, and much of the PoPs for today were based on the HRRR. Additional precip has been observed west of the DFW Metroplex and farther southwest towards San Antonio. This development is in response to increased ascent directly ahead of the approaching shortwave trough. After this primary round of rain exits the area, some redevelopment is possible this afternoon south of Interstate 20 as the upper trough axis crosses the area. Additional rainfall amounts this afternoon should be relatively light. Cold Arctic air will move into the area over the next 24 hours. Temperatures have already fallen below freezing in Northern McCurtain County. Locations southeast of a line from Toledo Bend Dam to Monroe LA will likely experience very little warming today and may actually see temperatures fall a couple of degrees during the late morning hours. Temperatures will plummet today as skies clear and wind speeds diminish. Almost the entire area will be below freezing. Temperatures will moderate through Saturday, but showers and thunderstorms will become likely areawide late Friday and continuing through much of the weekend as another cold front and series of upper troughs affect the region. Based on the latest model guidance, rainfall amounts should be much lower compared to this event. There will also be a brief window for a rain/sleet mix late Saturday/early Sunday in Southeast Oklahoma just before the precip exits. It could very well evolve like today, and the precip exits just as the cold air arrives. However, even if wintry precip occurs, no significant accumulations are expected.
