.SYNOPSIS...
Santa Ana weather conditions will prevail into next week. Winds will
drop off today and even turn back onshore for a time, then turn back
offshore and increase again on Sunday. A little cooler today, then
warmer again Sunday and Monday as stronger easterly winds redevelop.
Strongest winds on Monday into early Tuesday will be on the coastal
slopes of the Riverside and San Diego County mountains. The days
will be warm, and the nights cool, with very low humidity.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
No surprise...skies remain clear across SoCal with no sign of any
marine clouds well offshore either. Surface pressure gradients have
relaxed considerably over the past 24 hours, but remain weak
offshore from the deserts. This is keeping NE winds relatively light
with peak gust reports at 2 AM PST mostly under 25 MPH.
Where the winds have fallen off, temperatures were much lower than
last night. This will be felt by morning in many areas, especially
the high deserts where the first Frost Advisory of the season is in
effect. Frost or near freezing conditions will be widespread there
by morning. Not quite as cold tonight into Sun morning, but still
cold enough to damage sensitive plants.
A highly amplified ridge over the EastPac along 135W will drift
slowly east, reaching CA on Monday. the ridge will persist over the
State through most of the upcoming week, fending off any Pacific
weather systems while holding temps above average. Two more
shortwaves are slated to drop south along the eastern side of
the ridge the first will move over the Great Basin on Sunday, the
second, farther east over the Rockies. They will reinforce the cold
air over the interior and raise the sfc pressure inland early next
week. This reinforces our offshore pattern with more strong and
gusty east to northeast winds expected.
The wind will be strongest below the Cajon Pass and over the Santa
Ana Mts on Sunday, but forcing will favor the north-south oriented
mtn ranges Mon/Tue so stronger gusts will likely be logged in wind-
prone areas near and below the San Gorgonio Pass and the San Diego
County mts then. The gusty winds and continued very low humidity
will prolong the potential for dangerous wildfire spread. See the
Fire Weather discussion below.
The sharp ridge off the Coast will become less amplified later next
week which will decrease the strong offshore wind threat, but still
keep our weather mild and dry into next weekend. Several operational
runs of the GFS have been advertising a significant pattern change
over the West after next week, but ensembles are more muted. So for
now, expect some cooling and moistening after next week, but still
no sign of precip.

100950Z...Areas of smoke from nearby wildfires possibly increasing
this afternoon through Sunday morning, though surface vis will
remain unrestricted. Otherwise clear with light winds through early
Sunday morning.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A slight reprieve from the critical fire weather today as winds
weaken and turn back onshore by afternoon.
On Sunday...The offshore flow will resume and pick-up in the
afternoon over Orange and San Bernardino Counties, then develop
south across the remainder of Riverside and San Diego Counties by
evening, strengthening again out of the east to northeast Sunday
night into Monday morning. For Monday night and Tuesday, strongest
winds will be near the San Gorgonio Pass, and on the coastal slopes
of the Riverside and San Diego County mountains.
Northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph with peak gusts 45 to 55 MPH in
wind-prone areas will prevail early in the event over northern
areas, spreading south with higher gusts possible Monday into
Tuesday along the San Diego County coastal slopes. Peak gusts may
top out well over 60 MPH for the storied SDGE sites like Sill Hill
and Boulder Creek, but for most areas, peak gusts of 50 to 55 MPH
look more likely Mon through early Tue morning. RH will remain
critically low, in the single digits most areas during the day, with
little recovery in the windy areas overnight.
A Fire Weather Watch has been posted for Sunday through Tuesday and
will likely become a Red Flag Warning later today. Elevated to
locally critical fire weather conditions will likely continue into
Wednesday with lighter winds. A gradual RH recovery is forecast late
in the week as the offshore pattern turns more onshore.
