.SYNOPSIS...
After a cool start this morning, expect a fair and mild day with
light winds. Warm and dry weather returns this weekend as high
pressure builds over the West, accompanied by Santa Ana conditions.
Gusty offshore winds will quickly drive any left-over marine air
offshore on Saturday morning, leaving very low humidity and warm
days through Tuesday. Strongest winds will develop along the
coastal foothills, and through favored passes and canyons.
Somewhat cooler mid next week, but still above normal, as the
high pressure aloft weakens and weak onshore flow returns.

The fire weather watch was issued for Saturday evening through
Monday afternoon. Critical fire weather conditions will be likely
in the mountains and along the foothills in the eastern valleys.

The weak trough responsible for our isolated light rain showers
yesterday is moving east across the Rockies this morning. High
pressure will build over the Great Basin today in it's wake, but
will not be strong enough to overcome the diurnal onshore gradient
today. This will keep a modicum of marine air over the coastal
basin resulting in only modest warming.
Over the weekend it will be a different story as sfc high
pressure strengthens to around 1042 MBS over the Great Basin, and
a weak shortwave trough slips south around an upper-level ridge
building over central CA. The trough will give a bit of support
aloft to an already strong sfc gradient from the high over the
interior. Put it all together and you get a prolonged Santa Ana
event this weekend with much above average temps, very dry air,
and gusty winds at times. Where the winds remain elevated
overnight, temps may not fall below 60, while sheltered areas drop
through the 50s. The warmth will reach the beaches, where highs
should reach well into the 70s to around 80 degrees F. the dry,
windy, warm conditions will create elevated wildfire concerns.

After Monday, the ridge aloft deflates as a shortwave moves
through the westerlies to the north. This looks sufficient to turn
our sfc wind back onshore, increase the humidity a bit, and
provide cooler days next week. Still, there is no precipitation in
site as an upper- level ridge remains over the EastPac through at
least the following weekend.
