The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a Beach
Hazards Statement...which is in effect through Sunday afternoon.
The High Surf Advisory has been cancelled. 

* Surf...3-6 feet with max sets to 7 feet in favored spots.

* Changes Since Last Issuance...The surf has steadily fallen since
  Friday night and is now below the High Surf Advisory criteria of
  7 feet at most beaches. However, above average surf of 3 to 6
  feet is forecast through Sunday afternoon. A Beach Hazard
  Statement for above average surf and strong rip currents was
  issued and will be in effect through 6 PM Sunday.

* Impacts...Increased risk of drowning due to elevated surf and
  strong rip currents. Sneaker waves and other hazards can create
  life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. 

* Surf Reports...At 1 PM Saturday the surf was 5 feet at
  Huntington Beach and Mission Beach, and 4 feet at San Clemente
  and Solana Beach.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as strong
rip currents...elevated surf heights...minor tidal overflow...or
lightning are possible at local beaches.  Obey posted warning
signs and flags and talk to a lifeguard before swimming.  Use
caution when in or near the water and always swim near a
lifeguard.

.SYNOPSIS...
Fair and very mild weather will continue through Tuesday. Locally
gusty northeast winds will occur through and below passes and
canyons through Tuesday morning. Cooling will begin Wednesday as
onshore flow strengthens and the marine air moves farther inland. A
low pressure trough speeding across the Pacific will bring rain,
snow to the mountain peaks, and gusty westerly winds. Locally heavy
rain will likely occur on the coastal mountain slopes. Another
system could bring more precipitation this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

Other than some patchy high clouds, skies were clear across SoCal at
8 PM PDT. The 00Z Miramar sounding had a shallow weak inversion base
near 1000 FT MSL. Winds were NW 10 KT or less below 3500 FT and
solidly NE above through 10K FT. The sfc gradients were holding at 7
MBS offshore from SW NV to KSAN, but NE winds were mostly 15-20 MPH
in the windiest spots. It was quite dry with RH values at numerous
stations inland at or below 15%. The winds are likely to pick up a
bit overnight into Tue morning, combined with the low RH well
inland, will continue an elevated fire weather threat there.

Looks like the offshore gradient, coupled with cool drainage flow
should hold any stratus/fog development offshore tonight. Wednesday
will be a transition day as onshore flow strengthens. The marine
layer will be returning Tue night with low clouds expected to spread
inland over coastal areas and into the western valleys, where some
fog is possible. No forecast changes this evening. New...HYDROLOGY

From previous discussion...

The Pacific storm system is still on track to bring widespread rain
Thursday, possibly starting as early as Wednesday evening. Rainfall
amounts vary with each model, but it still looks like around or
slightly under one inch will prevail at lower elevations, though
confidence is increasing that orographic southwest-facing slopes
will receive substantially more, perhaps 3-5 inches locally, from
Wednesday night through Friday morning, as southwest flow in the 850-
700 MB will be saturated with speeds in the 20-40 knot range over
the mountains. GFS has been consistent with a weak atmospheric river
in our area, with 500 kg/m/s values during recent runs, and
saturation mostly up to 600-650 MB. Timing of the maximum moisture
and forcing along the front is likely to be late morning-early
afternoon Thursday, though probably a bit later in San Diego County.
The cold air aloft will stay mostly to the north, so snow levels
will be quite high, 8000+ feet Thursday morning, then 6500-7000 feet
by Thursday evening, so snow will mostly be restricted to the
highest mountains of San Bernardino/Riverside County. With tight
pressure height gradients aloft, strong winds will occur in the
mountains and parts of the deserts Thursday/Thursday night, with
gust potential over 60 MPH.

Precip should end Friday morning, but models, somewhat
inconsistently, are showing a weaker but colder system moving
through sometime over the weekend, which could bring more rain and
some mountain snows, but probably nothing excessive.

.HYDROLOGY...
A fast-moving low pressure system will drive east across CA on
Thursday. Current indications are that it will pull a cold front
across the CWA from NW to SE on Thursday fed by a moisture plume of
just over one inch. Strong upslope flow should concentrate the
heaviest precip amounts of 3 inches or more on the coastal slopes
for the duration of the storm. Due to the speed of the system,
widespread excessive rainfall and flooding is not expected. However,
models are showing cold frontal structure to the sfc winds, and
support aloft by the nose of a strong jet aloft. Organized heavier
rainfall is possible along and just ahead of the front, and the cold
air aloft trailing it will set the stage for post-frontal convective
showers and possible thunderstorms. Rainfall rates are likley to be
briefly heavy at time of frontal passage. It will be more difficult
to determine the timing of any convective rainfall potential in any
less organized activity behind the front later Thu/Thu night. At
this time rainfall rates are expected to reach 1/2 inch per hour
near the front. In any heavy convection/thunderstorm development
though, rates could reach 1/2 inch or more in 15 minutes. These
rates are capable of triggering debris flows, urban flooding, and
ponding of water in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Greatest
impact appears to be for Thursday. Where available, check latest
briefing sheets for updates on forecast rainfall timing and rates.

.AVIATION...
270430...FEW/SCT high clouds AOA 25,000 ft and unrestricted vis
through Tuesday afternoon. Low clouds will likely return to the
coast Tuesday night.

.MARINE...
No hazardous marine weather is expected through Tuesday. Combined
seas will increase to 9-11 ft on Wednesday, followed by gusty west-
northwest winds Thursday through Saturday. This will likely generate
conditions hazardous to small craft for the latter half of the week.

.BEACHES...
A 9-11 ft swell at 16-18 seconds from 290 degrees will generate high
surf, strong rip currents, and the potential for minor coastal
flooding and minor beach erosion beginning on Wednesday and likely
continuing into the weekend. A Beach Hazards Statement remains in
effect for Tuesday afternoon through Friday evening.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Low RH will continue inland through Tuesday, with some recovery late
in the day as winds turn back onshore. Northeast winds will hold
overnight into early Tuesday morning at 15 to 20 MPH along the
coastal slopes and foothills, with isolated gusts 25-30 MPH below
wind-favored canyons and passes. Otherwise the wind will trend
weaker and turn back onshore by Tue afternoon. Better RH recovery
will occur tomorrow night through Wednesday, with wetting rains
Thursday.
