.SYNOPSIS...
A Santa Ana weather pattern will be in place through most of next
week with dry weather and periods of offshore winds. Strong Santa
Ana winds will impact the mountains, foothills and valleys tonight
through Friday morning before subsiding. There will be a second
round of strong winds Sunday and Monday. Temperatures will be a
little warmer than average in the coastal and valley areas through
the period, and a little below average in the mountains and deserts.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

No updates were necessary this evening. Santa Ana winds remain gusty
especially over portions of the Inland Empire and Orange County
where gusts up to 45 mph have been reported along with blowing dust
affecting the Chino and Ontario areas earlier this evening.
Strongest wind gust was 65 mph at CSU San Bernardino mesonet station
at 1245 PM. We will update the peak wind report before 2200. Strong
Santa Ana winds will continue overnight into Friday morning and then
gradually subside Friday. Will then be looking to the next
potentially strong Santa Ana wind event slated for Sunday into
Monday, which will likely require additional wind and fire weather
headlines. The other noteworthy weather feature will be very chilly
air settling into the High Desert with low temperatures falling into
the lower 30s Friday night and likely continuing into early next
week each night in some areas of the High Desert. These conditions
may require frost/freeze headlines on subsequent shifts.

Remainder of previous forecaster discussion issued at 145 PM
Thursday afternoon:

A prolonged period of Santa Ana weather is in store for Southern
California that will persist through next week. The first batch of
strong northeast winds arrived this morning and will continue
through midday Friday before decreasing. One other effect of this
Santa Ana was the significant warming that occurred west of the
mountains. Corona was 82F at Noon, 14 degrees warmer than yesterday.
In contrast, the mountains were much colder. Lake Arrowhead was 61F,
13 degrees colder than yesterday. Dewpoints plummeted 20-30 degrees
in these areas, and were mostly in the single digits. RH's were in
the single digits.

There isn't much change in the forecast from this morning. Double
digit offshore pressure gradients from the Great Basin will get a
little stronger this evening with surface high pressure over
northern Nevada. North to northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph will gust
to 55 mph in the mountains, foothills and some inland valleys
through Friday morning. Gusts to 65 mph are possible in a few spots,
mainly the Santa Ana Mountains, below the Cajon Pass, and some of
the wind prone ridges in the San Diego County mountains. Winds will
subside late Friday and Friday night with much weaker and more
localized winds on Saturday into early Sunday.

A colder airmass has filtered into the mountain and desert areas.
The High Deserts will fall into the mid to upper 30s tonight, and
then into the low to mid 30s Friday night where there would be
patchy frost if there was enough moisture for frost to form. As it
stands, the first Frost Advisory of the season may be needed for the
High Deserts to emphasis the first cold nights of the season.

On Saturday the winds will be lighter and the temperatures a little
higher in most areas.

On Sunday, another "inside slider" low pressure trough digs
southeast across the Great Basin for round two of strong Santa Ana
winds Sunday afternoon through Monday. The pressure gradient field
will be more east-west for potentially stronger winds in the
Riverside and San Diego County mountains and foothills, but San
Bernardino and Orange County will also experience strong, dry Santa
Ana winds.

occasionally moderate strength offshore flow.

knots with gusts 40-55 knots will continue especially below
passes/canyons and near the foothills with accompanied LLWS and
moderate-strong up/downdrafts. Local vis will be reduced to below 3
miles in blowing dust. Winds will gradually weaken Fri after 21Z.
Otherwise, skies will be clear with unrestricted vis through Fri.

Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear with unrestricted visibility
through Fri. Areas of northeast surface winds 15-30 knots with gusts
35-50 knots will continue along the coastal mountain slopes through
Fri, but with some weakening after 21Z.

No hazardous marine weather expected through Tuesday except for
local northeast wind gusts just off the coast of Camp Pendleton
likely exceeding 20 KT through Friday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Critical fire weather conditions through Friday afternoon across San
Bernardino, Orange and Riverside counties with strong Santa Ana
winds and single digit humidities. Sustained winds through Noon were
20-30 mph in these areas with peak gusts of 51 mph at CSU San
Bernardino and Highland Springs. The Santa Ana winds had also moved
into the Riverside and San Diego County County Mountains and
foothills.

High resolution models and surface pressure gradient field support
strong winds continuing tonight through Friday morning with a few
gusts to 65 mph in windiest mountain and foothill areas. Lowest
humidity this afternoon will fall to 4 to 8 percent, and then from 3
to 8 percent on Friday. Red Flag Warnings are in effect through 10
PM Friday.

Very dry conditions but with lighter offshore winds will continue
into Saturday. This will be followed by another moderate-to-strong
Santa Ana Sunday and Monday and a critical period of fire weather
potential with low humidities and near record low fuel moisture. The
pressure pattern will be a little more favorable for stronger winds
in Riverside and San Diego County, but it will be also be very windy
in San Bernardino and Orange County too. Humidities will remain very
low, likely in the single digits. Critical fire weather conditions
continue, and Fire Weather Watches/Red Flag Warnings will be needed.

Weak to occasionally moderate strength Santa Ana winds will continue
Tuesday through Friday of next week.
