.SYNOPSIS...Onshore flow will increase tonight. Marine clouds will
move inland overnight and it will be cooler on Memorial Day. Only
partial afternoon clearing is expected on Memorial Day, mainly in
the north interior and along the coast. Upper level troughiness
will keep the weather mostly cloudy Tuesday through Saturday with
near normal temperatures and possibly some light showers or
drizzle at times.

.SHORT TERM...A west to northwest marine push is underway this
evening with KUIL-KBLI at 2.5 mb and rising and KOTH-KSEA only 1.6
mb. The onshore flow will usher marine air inland overnight and
temperatures on Memorial Day will be about 10 degrees cooler than
they were today. Model time sections and forecast soundings show a
5000 ft deep marine layer in place across much of Western
Washington late tonight through Tuesday morning. If the NAM is
correct, expect little if any sunshine in the interior from about
Everett or so southward on Memorial Day. There may be enough lift
in the marine layer to produce some light drizzle or brief light
rain at times, mainly on the Olympic Peninsula.
An upper level trough will develop off the coast on Tuesday. This
will give even stronger onshore surface flow Monday evening and
produce more lift within the marine layer. The result should be
more extensive and persistent clouds on Tuesday, temperatures a
few degrees lower than Monday, and a chance of drizzle or light
rain over the north interior as well as the Olympic Peninsula.
The upper trough moves inland Tuesday night and Wednesday and is
replaced by another trough offshore Wednesday night. Expect strong
onshore flow to continue with a chance of showers on Wednesday.

.LONG TERM...From the previous long term discussion: On Thursday
another upper short wave will arrive, with a slight chance of
showers. Models have recently coalesced around the idea that a
deep upper low will move into the offshore waters from the west on
Friday, and send a feature that looks an awful like a front into
Washington. It isn't a strong front, but it seems to have enough
punch to put likely pops on the coast and in the Olympics Friday
and Saturday, with chance pops elsewhere. The upper low may move
through the area Sunday as it dissipates, keeping chance pops in
the forecast. Temperatures will be close to average all four days
Thursday through Sunday-- mid to upper 60s inland, near 60 on the

.AVIATION...Flat upper ridging over Western Washington will shift
eastward overnight as a broad upper trough moves into the offshore
waters. West flow aloft becoming southwesterly. Strong low level
onshore flow is expected tonight through Monday night. The air
mass is stable with increasing moisture below a deepening marine
layer.
Expect marine clouds to fill in late tonight with extensive
stratus with bases below 020 by Monday morning. Burnoff and
lifting will be slow to occur on Monday afternoon. Mainly MVFR
conditions late tonight into Monday with some VFR conditions,
mainly in the north interior, after 20Z Monday. Albrecht
KSEA...Seatac appears to be on the edge of where northerly winds
coming down Puget Sound meet southwesterly flow coming in from
the Chehalis Gap. Expect light southwest winds at the terminal to
dominate later tonight through Monday evening. Stratus will
arrive around 10Z, and at this time it appears that CIGS will be
in the 010-020 range. Some brief drizzle is possible Monday
morning temporarily reducing the visibility. Some modest lifting
expected mid-day through the afternoon on Monday, but it may not
scatter out on Monday afternoon given the strength of low-level

.MARINE...High pressure offshore combined with lower pressure east
of the Cascades will give strong onshore flow through Tuesday
night. Moderate to occasionally strong onshore flow is likely to
continue Wednesday through the end of the upcoming week.
Winds came close to gale force at Race Rocks and Sheringham BC
earlier this evening and onshore pressure gradients continue to
slowly increase. Hence, the small craft advisory for the eastern
two thirds of the Strait of Juan de Fuca this evening was upgraded
to a gale warning that will continue until 3 AM. After briefly
falling to 15 to 25 knots Monday morning, expect winds to increase
back to gale force in the strait late Monday afternoon into
Monday night. The gale watch for the eastern two thirds of the
strait for Monday night was upgraded to a warning. Small craft
advisory conditions can be expected in the waters adjacent to
where the gales are occurring.
Over the coastal waters, stronger northwest winds will develop on
Monday afternoon and continue through midweek, with wind as high
as 30 knots at times from Tuesday into early Wednesday. A rather
long fetch of northwesterly winds from Western Vancouver Island
into the coastal waters should generate a steep and short-period
northwesterly swell for the first half of the upcoming week.
