.SYNOPSIS...A ridge of high pressure at the surface and aloft over
the area will shift east this afternoon and evening. Low level
flow turning offshore today which will help warm temperatures into
the 60s in many locations. Today will be the last dry day until
the weekend with a series of fronts bringing periods of rain or
showers to the area Tuesday through Friday.

.SHORT TERM...Satellite imagery shows cloudy skies over Western
Washington early this morning. Doppler radar still has a few
pesky showers in the Cascades from King county northward and over
the lowlands from Skagit county northward. With the cloud cover
temperatures at 3 am/10z were pretty uniform, in the mid and upper
40s.
Shower activity coming to an end early this morning with an upper
level ridge moving through the area and the low level flow
becoming weakly offshore. Temperatures aloft warming today with
850 mb temperatures near 0c this morning ranging from plus 3 to 6C
by 00z Tuesday. Satellite imagery does show plenty of cirrus just
offshore which will be moving into the area during the day. This
could take a couple of degrees off the max temps. For now will
stay on the warm side with the transition to offshore flow and
keep highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s across the area.
Increasing clouds tonight with the next system approaching the
area by Tuesday morning. Model solutions on the 00z run backed off
the idea of the precipitation moving inland before 12z Tuesday.
The increasing clouds will keep low temperatures mild, in the mid
and upper 40s.
Front moving through the area during the day on Tuesday with
steady rain changing to showers behind the front in the
afternoon. Surface low near 990 mb associated with the front
moving northeast into Vancouver Island late in the morning.
Surface gradients increasing along the Coast and over the
Northwest Interior just ahead of the front creating some windy
conditions for these areas but not strong enough for advisory
criteria to be met. Highs will be in the mid 50s.
Post frontal showers continuing Tuesday night with the next front
reaching the area in the afternoon on Wednesday. Rain out ahead
of the front spreading over Western Washington in the morning.
Surface low associated with this front weaker and moving inland
further north than the front on Tuesday so expect lighter winds
with this system. Highs will be in the lower to mid 50s.
.LONG TERM...Extended models continue to show good consistency for
Thursday and Friday with an upper level trough moving through the
area on Thursday and a warm front reaching the area on Friday.
Model solutions backing off on the timing of the trailing cold
front with both the ECMWF and GFS keeping the cold front offshore
Saturday with the front moving inland on Sunday. Would like to see
a couple more runs of this solution before changing the weekend
forecast which has the front moving inland on Saturday. Will up
the max temps a few degrees on Saturday in this forecast package
for the possibility of being in the warm sector. Felton

.AVIATION...Westerly flow aloft over Western Washington this morning
with a drying air mass as a weak upper level ridge moves over the
region today. Flow aloft will back to southerly tonight as a frontal
system approaches offshore. Near the surface...light onshore flow
will turn offshore late this afternoon and tonight as a surface
ridge shifts east of the Cascades. Areas of MVFR ceilings are
expected to dissipate by 18Z with VFR expected for the remainder of
the day with plentiful high level moisture moving across the area.
Ceilings will gradually lower again tonight with MVFR ceilings in
rain developing along the coast around 12Z Tuesday and spreading
into the interior of Western Washington 15-18Z Tuesday.
KSEA...Above discussion applies. Areas of MVFR ceilings of BKN020-
030 are expected to dissipate by 18Z. Plenty of high level moisture
moving onshore today with a dirty upper ridge. VFR expected for this
afternoon and tonight. MVFR ceilings with rain from the next front
expected 16-18Z on Tuesday. Surface winds light southerly shifting
to the north 5 to 10 knots after 18Z today. Wind becoming E-NE 8 to
13 knots after 06Z tonight. 27

.MARINE...Onshore flow has relaxed significantly early this
morning as a ridge of high pressure built into Northwestern
Oregon. The high will continue moving NNE through the interior of
Western Washington this morning then into central and southeastern
British Columbia later this afternoon and tonight.
Forecast models continue to show development of a fast moving wave
into a 985-990 mb low as it moves northward along a front at
about 130W late Monday night into Tuesday. The combination of the
pressure falls to the southwest and surface high pressure shifting
northeastward will result in increasing easterly flow over the
coastal waters starting this evening. A small craft advisory has
been issued for the coastal waters and the West Entrance to the
Strait of Juan de Fuca starting at 5 PM this afternoon and
continuing through tonight.
Models all show winds approaching gale force in the coastal
waters and at the west entrance to the strait Tuesday morning and
possibly into Tuesday afternoon. A gale watch has been issued
starting early Tuesday morning for those zones. Models,
especially mesoscale solutions, also show the development of near
gale conditions at the east entrance to the strait as flow aloft
interacts with the Olympics with the passage of a negatively
tilted frontal system. A gale watch has also been issued for
Tuesday morning at the east entrance to the strait. Small craft
advisories are expected over the remaining waters.
After Tuesday's front, models show a series of weaker fronts
moving through the coastal waters Wednesday through the end of the
week giving small craft advisory conditions at times to most of

.HYDROLOGY...The Skokomish river in Mason County is above flood
stage early this morning but is receding and expected to fall
below flood stage late this morning. The Skookumchuck river near
Bucoda in Thurston county reached flood stage early this
morning. The river will crest within a half a foot of flood stage
before sunrise and recede below flood stage by noon. For Tuesday
through the end of the week flows will increase with the series
of fronts moving through the area but flooding is unlikely Tuesday
