Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 1241 AM EST Fri Nov 23 2018 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will wedge southward into the area tonight into Friday night. Low pressure will track from the Gulf Coast to off the NC Coast Friday into Saturday. High pressure works back in Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... As of 630 PM EST Thursday... Temperatures are mild this evening under canopy of clouds across the New River, Roanoke and Southern Shenadoah Valleys. Temperatures will slowly fall into the 30s by midnight, into the 20s by sunrise. The rest of the area will see mostly clear skies with temperatures dropping quick into the 30s. As of 200 PM EST Thursday... Layer of strato-alto cu keeping it a little cloudier this afternoon from the Greenbrier Valley east-southeast to Lynchburg, with more sunshine to the south. There is an inverted trough at the surface extending from the southern Appalachians into the Shenandoah Valley, leading to some convergence, while strong northwest flow exists above. As such the clouds staying just below an inversion with some wave action, will be hard to clear out and expansion in the clouds as we head thru this evening. Still not seeing any precip as layer of clouds is about 2-3kft thick. Models scour out the low level moisture Friday morning, such that we should see more sun for late morning til early afternoon, with increasing mid/high clouds streaming in ahead of the 5h trough across the lower MS Valley. Keep your coats and hats/gloves handy if you're out shopping early Friday morning as temperatures will be in the lower to mid 20s across most of the region. A northeast to southeast wind of 5 to 10 mph will make it feel more like the teens during the dawn Friday. Wedge will hold strong Friday with lower dewpoints and continued fetch off the Atlantic. With some sunshine went with warmer MAV but still 10-15 degrees below normal for late November with highs in the mid 30s to lower 40s in the wedge, with some mid 40s southside VA/ NW NC piedmont, and upper 40s to lower 50s west of Tazewell/Marion VA. Forecast confidence is high on temps and winds, but moderate on sky cover. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... As of 210 PM EST Thursday... Guidance remains in fairly good agreement in development of upcoming weather scenario Friday night into Saturday. A good amount of short wave energy associated with an approaching trof will create strong dynamic forcing along with strong isentropic lift over an in-situ wedge. The result will be widespread precipitation spreading into the region from the south Friday night and continuing into Saturday before tapering off later in the day. Bufkit soundings continue to show a typical warm nose/cold nose which supports a sleet/freezing rain scenario. While the parent high associated with the wedge will be well off the coast by Saturday morning, precipitation into the in-situ wedge with cold wet bulb temperatures will help keep temperatures from rising too quickly. Thus, expect ptype to be mainly sleet to freezing rain with accumulations through early Saturday morning before a gradual changeover to plain rain as the heaviest precipitation moves through. Confidence is increasing for a good glaze of ice especially along the southern Blue Ridge and north of Route 460, with some lighter ice accumulation down through portions of Southside and into the foothills/piedmont of NC. Liquid precipitation amounts will be in the 1.5 to 2 inch range, but spread out over almost 24 hours. This may cause some localized hydro issues but widespread problems do not appear likely at this time. Expect some lingering upslope showers to dissipate Saturday night as high pressure moves in, followed by fair weather on Sunday to close out the holiday weekend. Temperatures will be well below normal Saturday, though a rebound to near normal is expected Sunday ahead of the next system approaching from the west. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 210 PM EST Thursday... Persistent upper trof over the eastern US will keep temperatures well below normal through next week. Low pressure will move quickly through the Ohio valley Sunday night and push a reinforcing cold front through the Appalachians and central mid Atlantic region. The frontal passage will be notable with a good chance of showers and strong, gusty northwest winds. A good shot of cold air will surge in behind the front with upslope snow showers west of the Blue Ridge and blustery conditions through midweek. Temperatures plunge behind the front with highs Tuesday and Wednesday only in the mid/upper 40s east of the Ridge and in the upper 30s/lower 40s to the west. && .AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 1238 AM EST Friday... Generally OVC VFR ceilings currently across the TAFs, with some MVFR-type ceilings along the Blue Ridge likely leading to some partial obscuration of ridgetops. Ceilings should remain VFR, but will be close to MVFR thresholds at times through the remainder of the overnight. Though ceilings still VFR, question is when do these ceilings start to scatter out, as low-level drying has to this point proven to not significantly change ceiling trends. Will show some clearing by mid-morning based on model guidance RH forecasts. Winds east/southeast 6-12 kts through Friday mid-morning. Should see VFR SKC conditions through mid/late afternoon before ceilings begin to lower/thicken from SW to NE early to mid evening ahead of a warm front expected to bring a period of mixed wintry weather after the 06z TAF period for the TAFs. Ceilings should trend OVC VFR again at most TAFs, while lowering to MVFR at Bluefield and Blacksburg near the end of the 06z TAF period. Winds should tend light and variable for the evening, but a 40-kt southeast low-level jet supports potential mechanical turbulence/wind shear around the Blue Ridge and toward Bluefield. Forecast confidence is overall moderate to high, though question on how quickly ceilings drop to sub-VFR levels very late in the TAF period. Extended Discussion... Warm front lifting over residual cold wedge will lead to initial precip type likely either sleet or freezing rain at onset after 06z Saturday especially from the Blue Ridge westward, with better confidence of sub-VFR conditions after 06z as well. May be a brief light FZRA period at Lynchburg but most areas will change to rain Saturday. Expect there to be operational impact from at least light to moderate glaze on runways with an aircraft icing threat. Confidence moderate on precip changeover timing, but is moderate to high on initial precip types. System exits with a gradual return to widespread VFR Sunday, followed by possible sub-VFR conditions along with strong northwest winds with another system crossing the region Monday.
