.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front passes across early Friday, reinforcing the cold
air in place. Developing low pressure along the Gulf Coast
this weekend will move to off the Carolinas by early next week
bringing mainly snow to our area late Saturday night into
Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 625 PM EST Thursday...
Quiet weather for right now so not much change required for this
update. Latest Lamp guidance does not seem too eager about snow
showers in southeast WV however PoPs are small so continued with
the previous forecast. Otherwise, adjusted temps slightly to
match current conditions.
As of 220 PM EST Thursday...
Upper pattern remains fast/progressive this period with another
surface front entering the area late tonight. Forecast models
favor a weakening area of snow showers arriving in the WV
mountains late this evening going into Friday morning. Drier air
in place and strong westerly flow plus weakening upper support
will limit snowflakes getting as far east as the I-81 corridor
early Friday morning.
Looking at increasing mid and high clouds this evening then
lower clouds in the west late tonight into Friday morning, and
as we head through the day another wave aloft may bring a band
of mid/high clouds across the southern forecast area while the
north clears out.
Snowfall amounts are expected to be an inch or less over
western Greenbrier down to Burkes Garden, possibly up to 2
inches toward the northwestern tip of Greenbrier County.
Lows tonight will range from the mid to upper 20s in the
mountains, to lower 30s in the east.
Friday's highs will stay chilly behind this front with mid to
upper 30s west, to 40s east.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 PM EST Thursday...
Cold high pressure will continue to move east across the Ohio
Valley to the Mid Atlantic region Saturday evening. Overnight
Saturday into Sunday morning, cold dry air will wedge south into
the Carolinas and southern Appalachian Mountains. Meanwhile
across the south, an upper level low over the Mid West will push
a surface low east across the Gulf States. Bulk of Gulf and
Atlantic moisture with the surface low will stay south of the
area through Saturday evening. Snow will edge northward Saturday
night, starting across the High Country of North Carolina then
spreading across the entire area Sunday morning.
Sunday morning the upper level low tracks over Tennessee and
Kentucky increasing moisture transport over the wedge. The
combination of upslope flow, strong warm air advection and
isentropic lift will bring moderate to heavy snow to areas along
and south of highway 460. With an easterly flow, the higher
accumulations will be across counties along and adjacent to the
Blue Ridge. Going into the afternoon, the surface low tracks off
the Southeast Coast, taking majority of the moisture and lift
with it. However, the area will sit in the deformation zone
between the surface low and upper level trough into Monday
morning. Even though snowfall rates will decrease Sunday night,
persistent light snow will continue to fall into Monday morning.
There is a possibility snow will continue through the day
Monday as the deformation zones hangs over the area, waiting on
a stronger upper level low over the northern Plains to kick
everything to the east on Tuesday.
Before we get to the first guess storm totals, there are
several questions yet to be answered with this event. At the top
of the list is the track of the surface low. A wobble north or
south will dramatically change amounts. Second, is the effect of
the dry air with the wedge. Does this dry air hold off
precipitation or does it contribute to higher totals early due
to fluffiness. Late in the event, snow is expected to be wetter
and heavier, compressing the drier fluffy snow already on the
ground. With all that said, our first guess totals through
Sunday night will range from 12-18 inches across the North
Carolina High Country and Grayson Highlands to 5-10 inches
across the Mountain Empire, New River and Roanoke Valleys to
Southside Virginia. North of highway 460, 2 to 6 inches are
possible. Again these are first guess estimates on a storm that
is 2-3 days away.
Temperatures will drop into the 20s Friday and may warm into
the upper 30s to lower 40s Saturday. Temperatures will again
drop into the 20s Saturday night, but may not get above freezing
Sunday. Clouds and possibly snow will hang around Monday with
temperatures warming above freezing but not making it out of the
30s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 320 PM EST Thursday...
Most models have the deformation zone sinking south, ending
snow over the area by Monday afternoon. Cold high pressure will
track over the region Tuesday and off the East Coast on
Wednesday. A cold front is expected to approach the area
Thursday with temperatures warming into the 40s. Temperatures
should stay above freezing until the front moves east.
Precipitation with the front Thursday should be mostly rain.

.AVIATION /05Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 1231 AM EST Friday...
VFR conditions will prevail through the TAF period with the
exceptions being at BLF and LWB. A front passing through the
region this morning will bring some lower clouds to the
mountains but most should remain above 3kft. Some isolated and
very light upslope snow can be expected this morning in
southeast West Virginia. In the western mountains, ceilings will
drop to MVFR at BLF for several hours. A heavy snow shower
could produce IFR conditions this morning at BLF. Snow showers
should clear out and a return to VFR conditions by Friday
afternoon.
Any sub-VFR at BLF should rise to VFR by 14-16z Friday.
Medium confidence in ceilings, visibilities and winds
during the taf period.
Extended Aviation Discussion...
VFR conditions continue into Saturday but heading into Saturday
night and Sunday, a storm system with wintry precip (mainly
snow) will impact the area with sub-VFR cigs/vsbys. High
confidence in northern NC into southern VA having very poor
flying weather, and expect some closures. Storm looks to linger
into Monday but should see tapering off of any winter wx during
the day.
