.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will develop over the Gulf coast and move up the
eastern seaboard, spreading rain into the Appalachians and
central mid Atlantic region this afternoon, followed by a wintry
mix of precipitation Wednesday night and Thursday. Some
accumulation of snow and ice is expected especially west of the
Blue Ridge, along with periods of heavy rain and possibly
flooding across Southside Virginia and the piedmont of North
Carolina. Blustery northwest winds will bring some additional
snow accumulation west of the Blue Ridge Thursday night into
Friday, before high pressure brings improving conditions to the
area for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 415 AM EST Wednesday...
Closed upper low over the southern plains tracks northeast today and
across across the Tennessee Valley on Thursday. NAM and GFS and
similar with timing of system and strong lift as well as dry slot on
Thursday. Still some differences in temperature profiles with the
NAM on the cooler side. Bufkit forecast soundings precipitation
starting with a warm layer aloft enough for complete melting
then gradually cooling of the warm layer through the overnight.
Closer to the surface the cold wedge is nearly 4000 feet deep so
some refreezing back to sleet is likely. A freezing rain/sleet
mix greatly influences the impact of icing with the more mix or
pure sleet, the less icing there will be. Still enough liquid
equivalent to justify a winter storm warning from the northwest
North Carolina mountains to the Alleghany Highlands, including
Lynchburg. Based on collaboration with NWS neighbors will be
adding a Winter Weather Advisory as far east as Martinsville.
High pressure over the Mid Mississippi Valley will move northeast
into an ideal position for cold air damming down the east
slopes of the Appalachians by this evening. Wedge will be
further enhanced by in-situ precipitation and MillerB type low
pressure system. As the primary low deepens off the Virginia
and North Carolina coast on Thursday northeast surface winds
around the low in the Virginia and North Carolina foothills and
piedmont increase which may lead to power outages if there is
already enough ice on trees and power lines.
Will take a blend of guidance for maximum temperatures today.

By Thursday night, low pressure will be moving up the middle Atlantic
coast and pulling away from the region. This will allow winds to shift
around to the northwest and transition the event to upslope snow
showers west of the Blue Ridge with maybe some spillover to the east of
the Ridge through early Friday morning. However, thermal profiles
remain complex and expect ptype will be an issue until about Midnight
when it looks like all snow ptype west of the Ridge and generally
liquid for anything lingering east of the Ridge.
It looks like locations west of the Blue Ridge may see some light snow
accumulations of up to an inch, an inch or two across the Alleghany
Highlands, and 1 to 3 inches of snow for the higher elevations form the
NC mountains up through western Greenbrier. A light glaze of ice is
also possible mainly right along the Blue Ridge up into the Alleghany
Highlands. However, confidence in these accumulations is not high and
expect some changes to be made over the next couple of forecast cycles.
Due to the uncertainty and the convoluted forecast leading up to this
period, will not muddy the waters with any additional advisories for
Thursday night into Friday at this time.
The northwest winds on the backside of the departing low will strengthen
Friday night and expect some gusty conditions to develop west of the
Ridge. Some of the higher elevations may see gusts near 45MPH but
overall there does not appear to be enough ingredients in place to
support a significant wind event, but there may still be impacts if ice
lingers in trees as the wind increases.
Friday will be a blustery day as lingering snow showers dissipate by
the afternoon. The weather then looks to settle down as we head into
Saturday with the upper low crossing the region and transitioning us to
a more zonal pattern.
With this winterlike pattern expect temperatures to remain well below
normal into the first part of the weekend.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 415 AM EST Wednesday...
A weak cold front will approach form the northwest with a chance for
show showers west of the Blue Ridge and rain showers to the east Sunday
night into Monday. Otherwise, expect high pressure to keep fair weather
and below normal temperatures across the Appalachians and central mid
Atlantic region into the middle of next week.

.AVIATION /6Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 1201 AM EST Wednesday...
Generally VFR to MVFR ceilings initially, worst conditions from
fog producing LIFR conditions at Bluefield. Dry northwest flow
is allowing for upward trend to the cloud bases, so no
significant aviation issues anticipated through the first half
of the valid TAF period. Winds will gradually trend from NW to N
to NE as we progress through the morning as high pressure shifts
from the Ohio Valley into New England, wedging down the east
side of the Appalachians. It will be this classic wedge that
sets the stage for onset of wintry weather for Wednesday night.
Should see a south to north lowering and thickening trend to
cloud cover for Wednesday afternoon and evening atop strong
wedge of high pressure, as we await a potent storm system
emanating out of the mid-Mississippi Valley Wednesday evening.
Its effects on precip type and wind shear likely not expected
until after 7PM Wednesday evening, with VFR conditions likely
through the 00z/7PM TAF period. After 00Z/7PM, conditions will
deteriorate quickly with sounding profiles indicating a mix of
sleet and freezing rain from about 9PM Wednesday evening through
at least Noon Thursday.

Complex early season winter storm is expected to evolve over the
Mid-Atlantic into New England for Thursday into Friday with
potential for Freezing rain for the mid-Atlantic Thursday, and
mountain snow showers Thursday night into early Friday.
Clearing skies will take place in the wake of the storm system
for the weekend.
