.SYNOPSIS...
Strong low pressure offshore will move northeast and quickly
deepen overnight ahead of another Arctic front that should cross
the region by early Thursday. High pressure following the front
will bring another surge of Arctic air on strong northwest winds
through the end of the week. The center of the high should pass
overhead during the weekend ahead of the next complex area of
low pressure that arrives for early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 855 PM EST Wednesday...
Made a few minor changes to gridded forecast to reflect current
hourly temperature trends; but otherwise, existing forecast
appears to be right on track.
A brief flurry was recently reported at Lynchburg, VA, but more
continuous flurries on extreme northwestern periphery of
developing coastal low pressure system has, so far, been
limited to areas mainly east and south of Reidsville, NC. Expect
to see this western edge of flurries/light snow, to make a
glancing blow to the extreme eastern portion of the Blacksburg
forecast area until shortly after midnight, but threat for any
significant accumulating snow still appears to remain east of
our area of concern.
Current temperatures across the region will likely remain
nearly steady until after midnight, when arrival of next Arctic
front will again send temperatures downward toward daybreak.
Increasing post-frontal winds combining with falling
temperatures should ensure that wind chill criteria of -5F is
met by daybreak across the higher terrain.
As of 215 PM EST Wednesday...
Satellite/radar continue to show moisture increasing from the
south but remains undercut by low level very dry air the farther
north it advances across the Carolinas per current obs. Latest
Hires solutions do skim parts of the Piedmont with some flurries
or light snow this evening within the deformation axis as the
system really starts to deepen offshore. Thus added in a token
mention but quite doubtful for much to reach the ground at this
point. Otherwise expect more clouds east and perhaps some
clearing west this evening before the upstream digging upper
trough and next associated Arctic boundary arrive after
midnight. This may act to hold temps up more in the east until
later tonight while could drop off again in the west before
steadying as winds/clouds return. Expect combination of a
slither of moisture along the boundary and following upslope to
produce some snow showers west after midnight, but appear light
and perhaps not until dawn or later when deeper cold advection
ensues. This supports delaying pops west and reducing snow
amounts to less than an inch northwest through morning.
Low temps tricky given such a cold start under weak warm
advection and potential for more breaks west. Therefore ran
with a blend of overall slightly warmer lows excluding the far
west which likely to see more single digits at least behind the
passing Arctic front late. However appears enough wind espcly
late to keep the wind chill advisory in place for the mountains
tonight.
Area will be in the midst of a strong pressure gradient on
Thursday between the very deep low off New England and the
Arctic high well to the northwest. This along with strong cold
advection looks to make for an extremely cold day over the west
with temps falling out east from early morning highs that could
briefly reach above freezing southeast. Appears temps may fall
more over the west even after sunrise with most stuck in the
teens under a howling northwest wind for most of the day. Degree
of subsidence combined with the cold advection per local scheme
supports wind advisory criteria for at least the mountains and
perhaps a few hours in the east. Overall wind chills dont appear
enough to result in warning criteria at this point but advisory
in spots much of the day. Thus extended the wind chill advisory
for the mountains through the day while wrapping in the winds
and light snowfall over the northwest to simplify. Very dry air
and downsloping should help make for increasing sunshine out
east Thursday, while clouds linger far west where flurries/snow
showers look to linger with a few bands into the afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 PM EST Wednesday...
Very cold with strong gusty winds and dangerous wind chills into the
weekend.
The cold pattern we have been locked into since late December will
remain entrenched into the weekend. The deep low moving northward into
eastern Canada combined with strong Arctic high pressure moving across
the upper midwest will bring what looks to be the coldest air yet to
the Appalachians and central mid Atlantic region through Saturday.
Additionally, the low level wind field will become quite robust between
the deep low and strong high, bringing strong gusty northwest winds to
the region Thursday night into Friday along with brutal wind chills
especially at the higher elevations west of the Blue Ridge. Conditions
will be a bit more moderate east of the Ridge thanks to some downslope
warming.
Some snow accumulation is expected in upslope snow showers from
Thursday night into Friday. The arctic airmass will be very dry, but
should also be quite efficient in wringing out the moisture with snow
ratios approaching 30:1. There also looks to be some influx of moisture
from Lake Michigan upstream that will help snow showers/flurries
persist into Saturday as things gradually wind down. The most likely
period for additional snow accumulations will be Thursday night into
Friday with light amounts generally around 2 inches for the higher
elevations especially near western Greenbrier WV, though some narrow
bands of snow may develop and bring a local dusting to some areas out
to the Ridge.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 300 PM EST Wednesday...
The end of the bitter cold is in sight as the pattern starts to change
Sunday. The persistent upper low that has been keeping the cold air
locked in over the eastern US will finally pull out and give way to a
much more progressive and warmer pattern. As the pattern breaks, we
will get into very brisk southwesterly flow with good isentropic lift
accompanying a low developing in the mid Mississippi valley and moving
toward the mid Atlantic coast Sunday night through Monday night. With
all of the warming aloft and cold air at the surface Bufkit soundings
have a distinct look of freezing rain, especially given the very cold
ground temperatures coming off our spell of cold weather. Will have to
assess later model runs to see just how much black ice glazing can be
expected. As this system pulls away on Tuesday we can expect some
lingering upslope rain/snow showers west of the Blue Ridge with
generally dry weather to the east through midweek.
Temperatures will be trending to near seasonal norms for the first part
of next week, which will feel quite mild as we come out of the ice box.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 1130 PM EST Wednesday...
VFR conditions will persist at all Blacksburg terminal forecast
points east of the Blue Ridge (KROA, KLYH, KDAN) through the
upcoming 24-hour terminal forecast period ending at 06z/1AM
Friday as increasing downsloping winds from the northwest
overspread the area on the backside of a strong coastal low
pressure system.
Blacksburg terminal forecast points west of the Blue Ridge
(KBCB, KBLF, KLWB) will encounter increasing upsloping winds
from the northwest that will gradually return ceilings back to
MVFR in the 06-09z/1AM-4AM timeframe, trending even lower
toward low-end MVFR to even some localized IFR conditions by
daybreak as snow showers/flurries increase over the western
flanks of the Appalachians. MVFR, to occasional IFR flight
restrictions in/near the SE WV terminal forecast sites, will
then persist for the rest of the upcoming 24-hour terminal
forecast period ending at 06Z/1AM Friday.
Very strong northwest winds also to be an issue across much of
the region by daybreak Thursday, with gusts to 40+ knots
possible over the mountains, and 30+ knots possible across the
Piedmont.
Extended Discussion...
A prolonged period of strong northwesterly winds with MVFR to
localized IFR flight restrictions due to upsloping clouds and
snow showers will persist west of the Blue Ridge into Saturday.
East of the Blue Ridge, gusty downsloping winds will maintain
VFR flight conditions across the Piedmont.
Arrival of the surface high pressure system on/by Sunday will
bring diminishing winds, a return to widespread VFR weather
(even in the mountains), and slowly moderating temperatures.
Arrival of a fast moving low pressure system may result in
another round of sub-VFR flight restrictions mainly west of the
Blue Ridge on Sunday night - spreading east across the Piedmont
on Monday. Widespread MVFR to IFR restrictions with a wintry mix
of precipitation gradually transitioning over to rain is
expected as the system moves northeast through the region on
Monday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Antecedent conditions are dry. In spite of the cold, the
dryness of the current Arctic airmass and lack of meaningful
precipitation the last 30-60 days is beginning to set the stage
for potential fire concerns. Sun angle is low so the active burn
window is small, however with little or no moisture recovery at
night conditions are becoming favorable to sustain fire starts
if they occur. Ignition sources for this time of year given the
cold weather would most likely come from hot ashes being dumped
out by folks using wood stoves.

.CLIMATE...
A continued series of Arctic air masses is expected during the
next 3 or 4 days, likely threatening record low maximum
temperatures and perhaps even record low minimum temperatures.
