.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure and its associated cold front will cross the area
tonight. A ridge of high pressure will slowly work its way into the
region from the west, arriving Saturday night into Sunday. A weak
cold front will cross our area Sunday night into Monday before
another region of high pressure settles over the region by Christmas
Day.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 300 AM EST Friday...

Complex weather pattern is in store for the region through Saturday.

The center of an upper low currently positioned over TN/GA/SC will
progress northeast and be centered over the forecast area by the
middle of the afternoon. A generous stream of moisture will continue
advecting northward into the area on the east side of the system.
Precipitation with an associated warm front moved through the area
Thursday evening with moderate to heavy rain prompting some
localized flooding and the rise of area rivers. The next wave of
precipitation associated with the system's cold front is expected
to do likewise regarding localized increases in area creeks,
streams, and urban areas, and add to the increase in area rivers.
Given this, our flood advisory for most of the area will be allowed
to continue through mid-afternoon today.

The strong southerly fetch into the region will also help maintain
mild air across the region this morning. Most of the high
temperatures across the region will occur before mid-day with
falling temperatures in the afternoon in the wake of the expected
cold frontal passage.

Models the past several days have been hinting at some weak
instability in the afternoon for some isolated thunder across the
eastern portion of the area. Given the strong jet dynamics, cold
pool aloft with the upper low, and the small potential for breaks in
the clouds to allow for some surface heating, will be including
isolated thunderstorms in the east for a few hours this afternoon.

Once the upper low shifts east of the area, our prevailing winds
will shift northwest and we will enter a new phase in our weather
picture for today into Saturday.  The influence of these increasing
northwest winds will allow for two distinct weather features, each
of great enough magnitude to prompt weather headlines.

First, the magnitude of the winds and gusts are expected to increase
to values that warrant either a Wind Advisory or High Wind Warning.
Also, much of the area along and west of the crest of the Blue Ridge
won't quite reach the required speed thresholds, but be close, and
the impact of wet/saturated soils will allow trees to be toppled
more easily than normal. This will mean part of the area with
headlines for wind will be impact based, rather than completely
speed based. A portion of the area with the High Wind Warning will
be this way as well -- not necessarily reaching High Wind Warning
criteria, but having an even greater potential for a generous amount
of trees to be toppled thanks to the combination of wind and
saturated ground.

Second, these northwest winds will help to lift residual low level
moisture upslope and to generate snow showers across the typical
areas of southeast West Virginia, south into the Northern Mountains
of North Carolina.  Currently, western Greenbrier County, West
Virginia from tonight into early Saturday is slated to receive an
average of four inches of snow (range of two to six inches). This
range falls into criteria for a Winter Weather Advisory that will be
hoisted from tonight into Saturday morning. This area will have its
wind concerns mentioned within the winter weather headline.

Other portions of this upslope snow area will receive lesser amounts
of snowfall, below advisory criteria. However, all of these counties
that are expecting at least some measurable snowfall are the same
counties at will have wind headlines. These lesser-than-advisory
snow amounts will be mentioned within the wind hazard.

High temperatures today will range from the mid 40s to lower 50s
across the mountains with upper 50s to near 60 across the east, and
occur around mid-day before temperatures begin falling. Lows tonight
will range from the upper 20s to around 30 across the mountains to
the mid to upper 30s across the Piedmont. High temperatures on
Saturday will range from the upper 30s to around 40 across the
mountains to the mid 40s to around 50 across the Piedmont.

Forecast confidence in the above portion of the forecast is high on
the general synoptic pattern transition and moderate to high on the
placement of the hazards.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 230 PM EST Thursday...

High to bridge across the region from the south Saturday night
making for a mainly clear but cold overnight with lows in the
20s. Next front arrives from the west late Sunday or Sunday
evening as a swath of northern stream upper energy swings in
from the northwest. However feature will be lacking moisture and
sliding into deep westerly flow which should limit low pops for
spotty rain/snow showers to mainly the far west with only
clouds elsewhere before clearing most sections later Sunday
night. More seasonal ahead of the boundary Sunday with highs
40s/50s and lows mostly in the 30s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 130 PM EST Thursday...

Flatter zonal type flow to prevail to start the period with a
gradual transition to more southeast shortwave ridging by mid/late
week ahead of the next upper trough ejecting through the upper
Midwest. This supports mostly dry weather until Day 7 as seeing only
weak northern stream disturbances slice through overall high
pressure across and north of the region by midweek. May see a
sprinkle or flurry western mountains into Wednesday within weak
upslope flow before deeper moisture returns from the southwest
associated with overrunning of a warm front Thursday. This should
bring back a chance of rain espcly western sections during Thursday
although model timing exists on just how fast moisture will return.
Otherwise looking at mainly quiet weather around the holiday with at
or above normal temperatures as the axis of cold air shifts north
during the week.

.AVIATION /09Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 1240 AM EST Friday...

Flight categories are highly variable across the region
currently. Thanks can be offered to the fact that that first
wave of precipitation is exiting the region to the northeast in
association with a warm front. The next wave of precipitation
will be arriving towards daybreak Friday in association with an
approaching cold front. While most location are sub-VFR, there
are a few pockets of VFR in between the two waves of
precipitation.

The overall trends will be trend to all locations being sub-VFR
by Friday morning, and remaining that way until the afternoon
when the cold front crosses the area.

By Friday night, most areas in the east will quickly trend VFR
with sub-VFR clouds and scattered rain/snow showers between
KLWB-KTNB. Winds will become very gusty behind the front with
many surface gusts across the area in the 25 to 35 kt range with
some of the highest elevations approaching 50kts.

Forecast confidence in the above portion of the forecast is
moderate.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

Saturday will stay sub-VFR at least at KBLF with gradual
improvement into Sat night. High pressure will keep areas VFR
Sunday into Monday.

.HYDROLOGY...
As of 330 AM EST Friday...

Overall 1 to 2.5 inches of rain has fallen since Thursday afternoon
along and east of the Blue Ridge with less amounts in far SW VA and
southern WV. With another round or two of rain today anticipate
another quarter to as much as an inch of rain, but heaviest amounts
will more than likely occur along and west of the Blue Ridge.

The Dan River at Danville is already in minor flood as of 300 AM
this morning. Since grounds are soaked, and more rain is expected,
decided to keep the flood watch as is.

Minor flooding is expected along the Dan River, except moderate at
South Boston, with minor flooding downstream of Brookneal as well.
Will have to monitor rivers upstream as they are still rising at
Altavista and Wentworth.

Will also need to monitor smaller streams in the mountains as some
flooded Thursday evening.
