a Flood Warning for the following rivers in North Carolina...

Dan River near Danville affecting Caswell...Rockingham...City of
Danville and Pittsylvania Counties
Dan River at Paces affecting Halifax County
Dan River at South Boston affecting Halifax County
Moderate to Major flooding is forecast along much of the Dan River as a result of the rains expected to occur from now Tropical Storm Florence. Rainfall of 4 to 8 inches with isolated higher amounts is forecast over the next 48 hours across the basin with the highest amounts in the upper reaches within the Blue Ridge Mountains. The forecast for these flood levels is based almost entirely on forecast rainfall. Should the rain that occurs be lower, flood levels will also be less and conversely if the rainfall is higher then flood levels could exceed these forecasts. Updates will be made as necessary.
Although near record stages approaching the September 1996 flood are forecast at Danville it should be noted that the period of record at the current gage location is only since 1996. At the previous gage location in Danville the river had a considerably higher volume of discharge in the August 1940 flood than during the 1996 flood and likely much higher levels.

Although the Dan River at Danville may yet approach the record

the current location since early 1996. Records on the Dan River
dating back to the 1930s indicate that much higher flooding
has occurred in the past, notably in August 1940.
