High pressure in control through tomorrow. Good radiational
cooling tonight, with temperatures dropping into the teens
across central and northern portions of the area and low to mid 20s
across the southern coalfields and SWVA zones with more clouds
around down there. Clouds will be on the increase from the south on
Saturday as a low pressure system tracks just to our south.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 215 PM Friday...
After issuing a winter storm watch first thing this morning based on
the overnight snowfall forecast... am quite concerned by the drastic
shift southward in the 12Z NAM. The 12Z GFS has shifted north of
where the previous run was, but still keeps the bulk of the snow
south of the forecast area. The 12Z ECMWF has maybe drifted a bit
north but again looks to keep the sharpest gradient right near the
southern forecast area border. Will leave the watch as is for now,
as any storm track shift northward will bring a drastic increase in
impacts to the southern forecast area. At this point, confidence is
fairly low. A couple model runs in a row keeping things fairly
consistent would do a lot to help increase confidence in making
changes to headlines.
Synoptically, a surface low will be moving eastward along the
Gulf Coast, crossing southern GA and northern FL Saturday night
before quickly moving off the East Coast Sunday and Sunday
night. This track just brushes the far southern forecast area on
Sunday. Still have some likely POPs across southwest VA and the
southern tip of WV. Then have a fairly tight gradient to the
north with no snow expected across the central and northern
forecast area. With less intense precipitation expected due to
the southerly shift, backed off on the drastic wet bulbing I had
gone with yesterday, which keeps 850mb temps a touch warmer and
leads to more rain mixing in on the western and northern
fringes of the precipitation. But even then, expecting a very
tight gradient between those that see precipitation and those
that stay dry all weekend.
For temperatures, stuck close to the consensus blend which keeps us
below normal through the period.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 215 PM Friday...
Surface and upper level ridging begin moving towards the region
Monday night through Tuesday. This will keep the region in a light
northwest flow aloft on Tuesday as the area will remain on the east
side of the approaching upper level ridge. As the surface high moves
directly over the area overnight on Tuesday night, conditions
should be favorable for strong radiational cooling as
temperatures reach the mid 20s across the lowlands and upper
teens to low 20s in the mountains underneath clear skies and
light winds.
After a chilly start Wednesday morning, the region will be
positioned between a departing upper level ridge and a shortwave
trough moving across the southern plains. This will allow
surface temperatures to rise quickly throughout the afternoon as
WAA takes control across the region in response to
strengthening southwest flow aloft. In addition, cloud cover
will quickly increase in coverage from west to east Wednesday
evening in advance of the approaching shortwave trough.
By Thursday morning, surface high pressure sets up in northern New
England with a weakening shortwave trough approaching from the
southwest. This set up will allow a cold air damming environment to
develop. As remnant energy associated with the shortwave trough
moves near our region Thursday evening, precipitation is
expected to spread over the area from southwest to northeast.
While temperatures in lower elevations will be warm enough to
support rain Thursday night, there is a possibility of a period
of light freezing rain/sleet and/or snow along the east slopes
of the Appalachians. The GFS is a bit more aggressive with this
scenario than the warmer (and drier) ECMWF, but regardless of
the scenario that takes place, do expect surface temperatures to
rise above freezing area-wide by Friday morning which will
diminish the threat of wintry precipitation.
Beyond the current long term period, a much stronger and
dynamic storm system will be in the area headed into the
weekend.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1230 AM Saturday...
Most everywhere will see VFR conditions through the period.
However, there is a shallow area of low level moisture that is
causing MVFR ceilings at BKW. Latest model guidance shows that
is a fairly thin layer and over time some drying aloft will
begin over the next few hours. For now, left MVFR ceilings at
BKW through 09Z and then VFR expected thereafter.
High level cirrus clouds continue moving in from the west ahead
of a storm system that is tracking across the gulf coast that
may affect the region on Sunday. However, any impacts from this
system will occur after 06Z Sunday and BKW is the only site that
may see any aviation impacts with this system.
