.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 700 PM Wednesday...
Forecast on track, with the area currently between intensifying
low pressure churning up the east coast, and an arctic front
charging toward the area from the west.
As of 140 PM Wednesday...
First thing is first - have added the Greenbrier Valley of
Pocahontas County to the Wind Chill Advisory that was previously
in place for tonight through Thursday.
After a day with modest low level warm air advection, another
cold front will reinforce the Arctic airmass in place over the
eastern CONUS, with temperatures taking a tumble once again
through the end of the week. Ramp up the winds significantly in
the cold air advection behind the front tonight through Thursday
which will take the 850mb values from their peak at around -9C
today back into the -22C range by 00Z Friday. The temperatures
were a little tricky, but in the end, did not go with any non
diurnal temperature curve, as there should be an increase of a
small handful of degrees during the middle of the day Thursday.
However, many locations, once again, will not get out of the
teens. That, coupled with the increase in wind speeds, gusting
to 15-20mph across the lowlands and 20-30mph in the mountains,
will bring another round of low wind chills. For most locations,
these values will be below zero, and well into the minus teens
for the ridges, and peaking in the minus twenties for Snowshoe
Thursday.
Snow is on its way also, however, the setup for accumulations is
not great, with lacking moisture depth. Will get an initial
batch with the front, some lingering snow behind the front, a
brief lull in the early afternoon, and upslope for the
mountains. In the end, the only accumulations should be in the
mountains, and have added two time periods of area wide flurries
in the early to late morning hours, and again in the late
afternoon to evening.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 245 PM Wednesday...
Snow will be ongoing across parts of the forecast area to start
the period. Moisture is fairly limited, but we do have favorable
flow for some moisture coming off Lake Michigan. Cold air
advection and upslope flow continues through most of the short
term period...so have snow showers and/or flurries nearly
areawide through Friday, then tapering off from west to east
Friday night into Saturday. With the very cold air, snow ratios
should be in the 20-30:1 range. The ground is also cold, so most
snow that fall should be able to stick. Even a light coating
could lead to slick roads. By the time all is said and done, the
mountains should have 3-5 inches, tapering off to a dusting to
an inch across the lowlands.
Stuck close to a consensus blend for temperatures, which keeps
us in the deep freeze, with highs in the teens across the
lowlands and colder for higher elevations. Overnight lows will
be in the single digits either side of zero for most. Winds are
not overly strong, however they will be strong enough to create
some wind chill concerns. Already have a wind chill watch going
for the mountains -- which is still good. Will also likely need
to have wind chill advisories each night for a more widespread
area. Have detailed this in the HWO.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 245 PM Wednesday...
A brief warm up is expected Sunday into Monday. Still some
uncertainty on how the arrival time of the warmer air and the
precipitation differ, which will play a large role in precip
type. Initially, have some wintry mix Sunday night into Monday,
then changing over to all rain through the day Monday. GFS is a
bit warmer than the ECMWF in the mid levels...so confidence is
low on transition times at this point. Behind this system, cold
air surges back in with a transition back to snow Monday night
and with snow showers lingering into Wednesday.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 1245 AM Thursday...
An arctic cold front currently crossing the area will be
followed by a wind shift to the northwest. Clouds will be
lowering behind the front with some MVFR, and possibly some IFR
in the mountains by daybreak. Some snow showers will also cause
restrictions.
Clouds will gradually raise to MVFR in the mountains this
afternoon and VFR west of the mountains. Some restrictions in
snow showers remain a possibility. A plume of moisture off of
Lake Michigan will then provide a band of restrictions in clouds
and snow tonight, with the lowest and most consistent
restrictions in the mountains.
Northwest winds will become rather gusty today and tonight.
