Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston WV 708 PM EST Sat Dec 22 2018 .SYNOPSIS... Cold front Sunday with light rain changing to snow. Upper air disturbance Christmas day. High pressure Wednesday. Mild/wet system for the end of the work week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... As of 645 PM Saturday... Clearing line working northeast thru the area this evening. I am concerned there will be river valley fog developing tonight given the spread and saturated ground, despite no model showing it. I'll monitor trends over the next few hours to see if I need to put some fog in the weather grids. I like the previous forecast of going with the lower end of guidance for lows tonight and see no need to tweak at this time. As of 230 PM Saturday... A few light snow showers continue in the mountains this afternoon, but they will be winding down in the next couple of hours as ridging builds in. Clouds will start to dissipate from south to north this evening, but expect any clouds in the northeast mountains to linger until after midnight. Temperatures will cool off quickly tonight in areas that can clear out of the clouds first. Still lots of wet areas on the roads and some ice is likely to develop on untreated surfaces as temperatures dip below freezing. Our next system pushes in from the SW tomorrow afternoon. This system should start as all rain for the Lowlands, but as the low tracks to our east, colder air builds in aloft and some light snow will be possible. However, very little accumulation if any will occur for the lowlands. In the mountains, temperatures should be cold enough by the time precipitation moves in to fall as mostly snow, but there may be a brief period of mixing at the onset tomorrow afternoon. Even in the mountains, any accumulating snow will likely happen after sunset and during the short-term period of the forecast. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... As of 150 AM Saturday... Most models agree that a weak system from the southwest enters the area Sunday evening starting off as rain then transitioning to all snow in the late evening as temperatures keep dropping due to cold air advection and the lack of solar radiation. The system exits Sunday late, but lingers in the mountains until Monday early morning. Expect little to no accumulation in the lowlands and at most 2 inches of snow accumulating in the highest elevations in the mountains. Although the snow will be light due to the lack of enough moisture only reaching to 850mb in the upper levels, it can feel like almost blizzard conditions with winds up in the mountains and a possible heavy snow shower. Cannot rule out a 35mph+ gust on the highest ridges and peaks. Tuesday will be a drier and warmer day with temperatures reaching mid 40's however, a short wave will just graze the far northwestern part of the area. There will be possible rain showers for a short period of time before leaving the area Tuesday night. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... As of 130 PM Saturday... A high pressure system will provide dry weather on Wednesday. A strong system over the central US will then push a warm front/cold front combo through the area on Thursday and Friday. Although there will be a good dose of rain, with the main low lifting up west of the area, should be much less than the last 2 big events. && .AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 710 PM Saturday... Clouds are beginning to depart the western extent of the region, with HTS being the first terminal to clear out and BKW not too far behind by the time of this issuance. The biggest challenge overnight tonight will be whether or not the Lowlands will see visibilities be impacted by fog development in the next few hours. Saturated soils and clearing skies would suggest that fog is possible tonight, but winds aloft depicted on forecast soundings do not support the likelihood for development. Confidence remains low at this time, but have chosen to include the mention of fog around CRW and HTS late tonight. Skies continue to clear through the region overnight with brief high pressure building in. VFR conditions will then return for most terminals, aside from those that fog overnight, in which case those terminals will finally change over to VFR for a brief time after 13z Sunday morning. A weak system presses in from the west late in the Zulu day Sunday with the reintroduction of MVFR as rain encroaches the region. This system looks to move out fairly quickly and should be out of our hair by Monday morning. FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 00Z MONDAY... FORECAST CONFIDENCE: Medium.
