Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston WV 104 PM EST Tue Feb 13 2018 .SYNOPSIS... A weak upper level disturbance crosses southern portion of area this morning. More potent disturbances cross farther north Wednesday through Thursday. A cold front crosses early Friday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... As of 1054 AM Tuesday... Previous forecast remains on track. No changes necessary. As of 425 AM Tuesday... Overall, still expecting relatively quiet weather in the near term period. High pressure, and a developing southeasterly flow today, will allow for some moisture to creep into the area today, mainly affecting southern and eastern zones. Depending on development/timing, could see a brief period of light freezing rain this morning, across far southern WV and southwest VA, before switching to rain. If it does develop, will be light, with minimal impacts or accumulations. There has also been some patchy valley fog developing this morning, which should generally dissipate by early morning, if not sooner as cloud cover quickly overspreads the area. Otherwise, generally dry today, with increasing clouds. Warmer, with many locations topping out in the mid to upper 40s. Moisture will be on the increase overnight out ahead of the next system, which will spread light precipitation/rain back into the region towards Wednesday morning. With the approach of the next system, expect a brief drop in temperatures tonight, before becoming somewhat steady overnight. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... As of 425 AM Tuesday... Deep layer southwesterly flow of increasingly mild and moist air prevails into Thursday night. Multiple upper level flat short wave troughs cross in high height zonal flow, as upper level high pressure remains parked over the Gulf of Mexico. A low level moist feed persists from the western Gulf of Mexico, with surface high pressure anchored farther east, from the eastern Gulf, across Florida and into the western Atlantic. Rain will be very light Wednesday morning, given a shallow moist layer at first. As an upper level short wave crosses and moisture deepens and increases, rain will become heavier Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night. Amidst the additional flat waves that follow, the trend will be to focus precipitation farther north Thursday, closer to a cold front being driven southeastward toward the area by a northern stream trough. With PW values near climatological maxima Thursday into Thursday night, QPF reflects model trends, which show generally one to two and a half inches across the area, with the highest amounts generally across the north, in agreement with the day 3 slight risk for excessive rainfall across the middle Ohio Valley. Will continue to highlight in the HWO, as these widespread amounts will lead to stream and then river rises, and possible flooding. Still have thunder out of the forecast given lack of explicit instability, although, at times, a deep adiabatic sounding with ice crystals up top, and sufficient shear, could lead to charge separation. The rain than shifts southward overnight Thursday night and Friday, as the cold front pushes southeastward into the area. The precipitation may end as snow, or a wintry mix Friday night, as the front pushes on through. Central guidance temperatures looked good. Kept surface temperatures thresholds for snow low, at 33 for a mix and 34 for rain, given that moisture quickly becomes shallow as colder air arrives, limiting crystal growth and even crystal presence. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... As of 425 AM Tuesday... Have a slight chance for precipitation roughly southern half of the forecast area Saturday morning, followed by a dry balance of the weekend, as a cold front continues to push south of the area. The guidance envelop still includes the chance for precipitation longer and farther north. The precipitation chance does return north Sunday night, and continues into early next week, as high pressure exits, the upper level flow backs, and moisture returns from the south. The progress of a new cold front approaching from the west may be stymied by tenacious upper level ridging off the southeast coast. Central guidance temperatures show near normal values behind the cold front Saturday and Saturday night, followed by above normal values through the balance of the extended forecast period. && .AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 555 AM Tuesday... VFR conditions will prevail across the area today. Southwest flow aloft pushing small areas of light rain or drizzle along the western slopes.
