Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 1031 AM MST Thu Nov 22 2018 .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night Overview...The forecast period will be marked with unsettled weather, as a series of shortwave troughs move over the Intermountain West. A more significant storm system/low pressure center, originating over AK/the North Pacific, will move onshore over the PACNW late Friday afternoon. This storm will bring a cold front and enough Pacific moisture for moderate snow across the far west. This system will move across E ID/SW WY/NW CO Friday night into Saturday, before exiting over the Central Plains Saturday night. Heavy amounts of snow will be possible for the far west, along with strong northwest winds behind the cold front across southern portions during this time. Synopsis...Morning fog will be possible again in the Wind River Basin. However, mid level temperatures will quickly cool this morning as a cold front moves across the area. In addition, clouds have increased across the area. Both of these factors will limit the extent and timing of the fog and should clear out by mid morning. Afterward, the Wind River Basin is expected to finally mix out. This mixing will allow all areas east of the Divide to rise into the 40s to mid 50s. Rain and snow showers will increase across the west after sunrise this morning. Any snowfall amounts in the lower elevations will stay light, as most of the energy associated with this first trough breaks apart. Most of the accumulating snow will occur late Thursday night and into Friday morning. The only contributing factors for this snowfall will be orographics/isentropic lift and cold mid level temperatures. However, there could be a burst of moderate snow over the Tetons this afternoon and again late tonight. Elsewhere, gusty winds will occur over Natrona County again today. These winds will decrease slightly Thursday night, before increasing again and spreading across southern Wyoming by Friday morning. There now looks to be a significant break of any appreciable snowfall during much of the day Friday. This will be due to a shortwave ridge, supporting a warm front associated with the main storm system. Moderate, with periods of heavy snow, will then return to the far west by 00Z Saturday. This will continue through the overnight hours, before winds turn NW behind the cold front. 700mb WNW winds of 40 kt will occur over areas east of the Divide, as well as southern portions during the day Friday. These winds will increase and turn SW across the southern half of the forecast area Friday night, as the storm system begins to dig over S ID. This will lead to strong winds over portions of southern Lincoln and western Sweetwater counties. The cold front will begin to quickly pass through NW portions after 06Z Saturday and blasting through the rest of the forecast area by 15Z. N to NW winds with gusts of 30 to 45 mph will occur over all areas, except the far west behind the front. The I-80 corridor will be significantly impacted as well, as most of the snow will fall as the cold front moves across the area. This, coupled with the strong winds, will create blizzard-like conditions. Depending on how much snow falls during the 06Z - 15Z period, there could be ground blizzard conditions that continue Saturday afternoon. As the front exits the forecast area, a triple point/occluded low will develop over the High Plains. This could lead to a burst of snow to occur Saturday afternoon under a trowal, that will move over the I-25 corridor. Forecast snowfall amounts remain relatively unchanged, with 4 to 8 inches in the western valleys, 12 to 24 inches in the western mountains; 2 to 3 inches across the I-80 corridor; 1 to 2 inches east of the Divide. .LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday Sunday will be a much better day for holiday travel across the Cowboy State as dry and cool northwest flow prevails behind Saturday's storm system. A couple of weak ripples in this NW flow may produce some light snow showers in the northern mountains, but the models have been trending drier. Upper ridge will build into the area Monday and Tuesday bringing dry and milder weather to most areas, with the exception of inversions over the western valleys and lower central basins. More melting of existing snowpack than new snow accumulation in the short-term may save the Wind River Basin from the steep inversions, cold temperatures and fog seen over the last few days. The next in a series of Pacific storms riding in on a 160 knot jet will push onto the west coast Tuesday and into the Intermountain West/Great Basin Tuesday night and Wednesday. ECMWF is quicker to bust down the ridge over the Rockies with this incoming energy than GFS, so the ECMWF is also quicker to spread chances of precipitation into the west on Tuesday while the GFS holds off until Wednesday. Forecast leaves the model blend PoPs that favor ECMWF's scenario. Both ECMWF and Canadian models show a strong sub-tropical jet translating the southern tier of the U.S. late in the week while GFS does not show this degree of a split flow. ECMWF/Canadian would keep heavier precipitation to our south late in the week while the GFS would bring in more significant precipitation into the west just beyond the extended period - late Thursday and Friday. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday West of the Divide...KBPI/KJAC/KPNA/KRKS Routes The first of three distinct periods of light snow is passing through western Wyoming Thursday morning. Another round arrives Thursday afternoon with a final round late tonight. Main impacts will be at KJAC and KPNA and to a lesser extent KBPI. Conditions will be IFR/MVFR with the light snow with conditions improving to VFR in between each round. Shortwave passage around 12Z/Friday will generate west-northwest wind 15-25kts at KBPI, KPNA, and KRKS Friday morning. KJAC winds will increase from the south-southwest ahead of the next weather system set to arrive Friday night. Mountain tops will be obscured throughout the forecast period. East of the Divide...KCOD/KCPR/KLND/KRIW/KWRL Routes Conditions will be VFR through the forecast period with extensive mid-and high-level clouds. Gusty west to southwest wind will be found on the lee side of the mountains and within the favored wind corridor between KRKS and KCPR where 20-30kt surface wind will be common. KLND is the primary candidate for LLWS as west wind 35-45kts will be found between 013-020AGL. Shortwave passage between 12Z- 15Z/Friday will generate gusty northwest wind 15-25kts in the Wind River Basin, especially at favored KRIW. KCPR can expect at least another day of 24G34kts as the wind will increase around 14Z/Friday. Mountain tops along the Continental Divide will be obscured through midday Friday.
