Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 1113 AM MDT Fri Sep 21 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday Night) Issued at 124 AM MDT Fri Sep 21 2018 The trough that produced the convection across Northern Wyoming Thursday has moved off to the east with the asct low pressure circulation currently over the Minn/ND/Canadian triple point. Cooler and less breezy conditions can be expected behind this exiting trough today. This will translate into a classic late summer/early fall day today thanks to a flat ridge building into the area. It will be a little breezy along with Southern Wind Corridor today as the pressure gradient will not completely relax as it is a flat ridge. Then on Saturday we are back to potential red flag conditions as the next well developed Pacific trough tracks from the Pacific Northwest Saturday and into the Great Basin Sunday. For now, it appears that Central and Southern Wyoming will experience very low RH in the upper single digits and low teens once again along with windy conditions as this approaching trough once again tightens the gradient. Even though the RH will increase in Western WY Sunday, an associated dry cold front will plow through the area along with the elevated winds making up the difference. This weather system will produce a few showers and thunderstorms in Northwest WY late Sunday, with these showers spreading southeast across the rest of the CWA Sunday night, thus ending the potential red flag event. The instability will decrease Sunday Night, so mainly just showers are expected then. Temperatures Saturday should max out in the mid 80s at the lower elevations east of the divide with 70s in the far west valleys and basins. Expect a cool down of up to 5 degrees east of the divide Sunday along with 10 degrees west. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Thursday) Issued at 124 AM MDT Fri Sep 21 2018 In wake of the trough Sunday, a trailing shortwave in the northwest flow could result in isolated convection east of the Divide Monday and Monday evening. At the surface, a quasi-stationary front will be along the Divide with a very dry atmosphere remaining in place over southwest Wyoming. Looks like winds could remain breezy over the southwest, thus elevated to possibly critical fire weather conditions could continue over SW Wyoming Monday despite the cooler temperatures. On Tuesday, the quasi-stationary front looks to wash out with seasonable temperatures, mainly light winds, and no precipitation. Global models are in decent agreement with a significant shortwave trough digging from Alberta into the northern Plains/Upper Midwest Wednesday into Wednesday night. This system would send a Canadian cold front south across much of the area late Wednesday into Wednesday night. Most of the dynamics with this system should remain well northeast of the area, but cannot rule out a brief period of precipitation along and behind the cold front east of the Divide. On the fire weather aspect, elevated to possibly critical conditions could occur over the southwest Wednesday ahead of the cold front that if strong enough will pull across southwest WY Wednesday night. In wake of this system, a dry northwest flow is expected Thursday with seasonable to below average temperature east, and seasonable west. Some model guidance are showing the front quickly washing out Thursday over SW Wyoming with a dry westerly breeze kicking in Thursday afternoon. Models then differ significantly if another shortwave trough in the northwest flow will impact the area. For those areas that have not hit freezing in the short term or even Tuesday morning, a widespread freeze is likely Thursday morning depending on quickly clouds associated the Canadian cold front depart Wednesday night. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday) Issued at 1100 AM MDT Fri Sep 21 2018 VFR conditions to prevail at the terminal sites through the period. Areas of smoke will occur along and north of a KBPI to KPNA line through Saturday morning. MVFR visibilities in smoke are expected with local IFR conditions from 08Z to 17Z Saturday. Smoke plumes aloft will drift east across central WY later this afternoon and evening. && .FIRE WEATHER... Today should see clear skies with more seasonable temperatures and lower wind speeds.
