Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 124 AM MDT Mon Sep 17 2018 .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night Overview...Overall pattern remains relatively unchanged this week, with an upper level high centered over the Southern Plains and a trough over the Pacific Northwest. This will keep a dry southwest flow over the region for the next couple of days. By Wednesday, a trough will approach the area and bring the next chance for precipitation. Synopsis...A few weak surface boundaries will linger over portions of the forecast area today. One will be making its way over northwest portions tonight, before becoming nearly stationary along southern portions of the Bighorn Basin and Johnson County. Very isolated showers will be possible over the far north this morning as a result. Another boundary will be the remnants of the cold front from Saturday night that will be draped from southern Lincoln to southern Natrona counties. Thus, temperatures will be slightly cooler across much of the area once again. However, RH values will stay critical across western and central portions. Elsewhere, RH values will not be as low due to the aforementioned boundaries. The pressure gradient will not be as tight today, however, gusty southwest winds will continue over the southern half of the forecast area with gusts of 25 to 35 mph. This will include the Wind River and Absaroka Mountains. Isolated to widely scattered showers/dry thunderstorms will again be possible off the Uintas this afternoon, moving northeast over Sweetwater County. This will also keep RH values from dropping to critical levels. A weak shortwave will move over portions of Lincoln and Sublette counties late tonight into early Tuesday morning. Isolated showers will be possible from this wave, as it makes its way over the Wind River Mountains. By Tuesday, one of the surface boundaries will be located along the east slopes of the Bighorns and into western portions of Converse County. The other one will be the stationary one along southern portions of the Bighorn Basin and the east slopes of the Absarokas. RH values south and west of these boundaries will return to critical values. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph will also return from southern Lincoln to Natrona counties. Overall, Red Flag conditions are expected across southern and south- central portions today and Tuesday and southern portions on Wednesday. A cold front will make its way southward over portions east of the Divide Wednesday morning, becoming stationary along the east slopes of the Wind River Mountains and north slopes of the Rattlesnake Range. Temperatures will be much cooler to seasonal, with the best chances for showers with isolated embedded thunderstorms occurring east of the Divide (especially over northern portions). Although temperatures will be cooler over the southwest/southern areas Thursday, a very dry atmosphere will remain in place and this combined with marginally breezy winds could result in critical fire weather conditions over those areas Thursday. Winds on Friday look to be lighter so fire weather concerns should be minimal. However this looks to quickly change for the upcoming weekend into early next week as the overall flow gradually strengthens and backs to the southwest ahead of a progged upper low/trough pushing into Pacific Northwest Sunday night/Monday. This pattern would result in above average temps, increasing wind fields, mainly dry conditions and low/very low afternoon RH. Thus another round of critical fire weather conditions could be in the offing for the upcoming weekend into early next week. && .AVIATION...For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday VFR conditions will prevail through the period. Local MVFR conditions are possible due to lower visibility in smoke northwest of KPNA and KBPI airports until 16Z.
