Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 957 PM MDT Mon Sep 10 2018 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 146 PM MDT Mon Sep 10 2018 Fire weather concerns will continue to be the main weather to deal with in the short term. It will be dry and warm (to very warm) each day with cool to chilly nights (big diurnal swings with the dry atmosphere, especially basins and low lying areas). Highs generally in the upper 70s and 80s east of the divide (only the frontal boundary up north will have the potential to keep temps down Tue onwards at times). After Tuesday, the northwest will see a steady cooling (and moistening) trend with the approaching baroclinic boundary and associated moisture. A chance of showers and a slight chance of tstms Wed ngt through Thu in the the park. Passing shortwave tonight pushes a shallow front into the north and ern zones late tonight and Tue which starts to retreat/erode in the srn sections in the aftn. This will be hanging around CPR which should alleviate fire concerns in much of the zone until Wed. In addition, the moist se flow on Natrona County's doorstep may aid in some buildups over CPR mountain late in the day/early evening with a slgt chance of a shower/tstm. Otherwise, we wait until Wed ngt/Thu for the chance of showers/isold storms into mainly YNP. For fire weather day, gradually getting worse Tue into Wed for our swrn and central zones with critical fire wx conds expected. This will likely continue in the same general area through Thu and beyond. By Thursday though, for contrast, highs in the park will only be in the upper 40s and 50s. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday) Issued at 146 PM MDT Mon Sep 10 2018 Southwest-northeast oriented jet axis to be just to our northwest to begin the forecast period. Models have been consistent in bringing a weak shortwave through the upper flow and across Idaho and Montana Thursday night and Friday morning. Therefore, have kept isolated rain showers over far northwest Wyoming during that period. Quasi- stationary boundary will keep temperatures more seasonal across the northwest Friday, while the central and south stay warm, dry and breezy. Friday will need to be monitored for potential fire weather highlights, especially across the southwest. Much the same expected Saturday with little change to the upper level pattern. Dew point temperatures may rise enough to nudge Saturday relative humidities above fire weather highlight thresholds. Latest ECMWF run has come more in line with GFS solution for Sunday. Models in at least closer agreement in bringing a shortwave off the Pacific and toward Wyoming later Sunday and Sunday night. ECMWF is about 6-12 hours slower with the eastward progression of this wave. GFS shows moisture drifting north into Wyoming around the backside of high pressure in the southern Rockies and Plains. The shortwave could further serve to draw this moisture north into Wyoming Sunday afternoon and evening. Best chance for showers and thunderstorms would be in the north and central where moisture and shear profiles are most favorable. Cooler temperatures Sunday will begin at least a short-lived cooling trend. Monday looks seasonal and dry across the entire forecast area. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night) Issued at 906 PM MDT Mon Sep 10 2018 Will continue with VFR conditions at all TAF sites across the area through the forecast period. Will continue with similar timing involving a progged weak cold front expected to push south during the initial part of the forecast with north-northeast winds in the 6-12 knot range after the front passes through the TAF sites.
