Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 1057 AM MST Mon Jan 29 2018 .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night Issued at 215 AM MST Mon Jan 29 2018 ...High Wind Watch for the Cody Foothills and portions of central Wyoming beginning late tonight and continuing through early Tuesday evening... Imagery shows progressive pattern continuing with a broad ridge across the western CONUS and a matching trof east. Another strong northern jet (110-150kt) runs through the ridge from offshore WA through BC and then down through srn Canada and into/through the northern and central Plains. The SFC has a long nearly stationary front from wrn MT, through WY and into ern CO. A strong area of high pressure continues across the Great Basin and Central Rockies. A few areas of sprinkles and flurries still falling over portions of northwestern/northern WY this morning. NW flow aloft continues along with a warming trend and more sunshine across the FA. Benign west to southwest flow expected across most of the region during the day today will give way to increasingly strong winds later tonight, continuing through the day Tuesday as the mid/upper flow trends more toward westerly and lee troffing begins. Correspondingly, a strengthening P, T and Omega Grad near the surface will lay under increasing flow aloft and good chances for mountain wave production by early Tuesday morning. This will produce a period conducive for high wind across both the Cody Foothills and the Wind Corridor (also possible in the Lander Foothills by mid-day Tuesday). High Wind Watches have now been issued to cover this period. The beginning of these winds are a prelude to the arrival of the next jet/shortwave combo later Tuesday morning with precip chances rising accordingly and light rain/snow beginning out west. Tuesday night Frontogenesis and eventual frontal passage may offer some low POP chances east of the Divide Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. However, the west northwest low amplitude northern upper level storm track may not push the front very far south, keeping light precip north and most of central and southern Wyoming (mostly) dry. Therefore, except for the Big Horn Basin and adjacent surroundings, Portions of Johnson and perhaps Natrona Counties may also see areas of patchy light snow/flurries Wednesday. .LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday Issued at 215 AM MST Mon Jan 29 2018 A chance of snow in the western mountains Thursday and Friday in a moist northwest flow aloft. Some snow in the northern Bighorn mountains as well both days. The rest of the region will be dry with breezy areas. High temperatures Thursday will be seasonal, then milder on Friday. A cold front will push into northern and eastern WY Saturday and by Saturday night the front will lie along the continental divide. The models have backed off on the full brunt of arctic air and now keep that just to our east. A chance of snow in the mountains and over the north and east zones Saturday into Saturday night as a moist northwest flow will occur. Models are quite generous with the liquid precip amounts and this will have to be watched this week to see if this trend will remain consistent. Dry weather for southwest WY and into the Wind River Basin for now. Sunday looks drier for the area with some lingering snow in the northwest WY mountains. An increase in snow coverage over the western mountains occurs next Monday with a weather system moving through the moist northwest flow aloft. Dry for the rest of the area next Monday with breezy areas. High temps Saturday and Sunday will be colder east of the divide with mild readings to the west both days. Just how cold in the east is still up for discussion as the GFS and ECMWF models differ on highs, especially Sunday. Will take the middle ground for now. High temps next Monday will be milder east of the divide with little change in the west. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon Issued at 1046 AM MST Mon Jan 29 2018 West of the Continental Divide...KJAC, KBPI, KPNA and KRKS VFR conditions expected through the period, however, clouds are beginning to return from the northwest. Expect mainly mountain obscurations through this evening. Strengthening ridge top winds will result in LLWS becoming more widespread across the area after 06z Tuesday. These conditions will continue through the morning hours and become marginal for all but KJAC by 18Z Tuesday.
