.SYNOPSIS...

Winter storms will bring several rounds of rain and snow to the
Sierra and western Nevada. Travel impacts will be significant
today in the Sierra with the heavier snow accumulations. The best
chance for seeing accumulating snowfall in western Nevada valleys
continues to be on Saturday morning as a colder storm moves through
the region. Cold, below average temperatures will remain in place
well into next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...

through Friday afternoon...

* Main adjustments through tomorrow to increase snowfall amounts
  around Lake Tahoe (at lake level) and for the Truckee area today.

* Snow character transitioning from wet slop (less than 10-1
  ratio) to somewhat more fluffy snow (~12/14-1) by afternoon.

The incoming system's cold front is moving through the Central
Valley at this time. Snow levels have maxed out and are currently
hovering between 5500 and 6500 feet. With the snow levels what
they are, chain requirements are widespread around northeast CA
(Hwy 44 and 36) and in the Sierra.

By mid to late morning, snow levels should begin easing down as
the front moves through the Sierra and western Nevada. With this
in mind, areas around Lake Tahoe that are currently seeing rain
should see a switch over to snow by 4-5 AM as colder air filters
into the region driven by an narrow cold frontal rainband (NCFR).
With this in mind, snow totals through tonight were increased
in the Lake Tahoe Basin (at lake level), with some areas now
forecast to see double what was expected in yesterday's forecast.
See the Winter Storm Warnings for snowfall amounts through tonight
in the High Sierra (they have not changed much overall for
elevations above 7000 feet). Outside of the Sierra, snowfall
should mainly be limited to above about 5500 feet, with 3 to 7
inches possible near Virginia City and Geiger Summit,
respectively, and along Highway 44 west of Susanville.

Tonight and Friday, snowfall winds down as the potent trough moves
off to the east. It will be brisk Friday with highs in the 30s and
40s for valleys with west to northwest breezes in the 10-15 mph

Friday evening through Monday...

No major changes in the forecast for our next storm to close out the
week. This will be the coldest storm of the season so far, moving in
Friday evening through Saturday. This storm will have lower snow
levels, higher snow ratios to the Sierra, and widespread snow
accumulations including the lower valleys in western Nevada and
northeast California.

Main Messages for the end of the week storm:

* Best chance for snow to accumulate 'down here' in the valleys is
  late Friday night through Saturday morning

* Travel in and around the Sierra, including western Nevada, could
  be very difficult Friday night through Saturday afternoon.

* Very cold temperatures this weekend through early next week.

Details:

This colder storm moves in Friday night into Saturday, bringing cold
and unstable air across the region. These unstable conditions will
lead to good spillover into western Nevada and northeast California.
With the colder temperatures, this will lead to higher snow ratios
in the Sierra. Additional snow amounts of up to 12-18" powdery snow
are possible in the High Sierra/pass level, with 6-12" in the more
populated areas around Lake Tahoe/Plumas/Lassen and Mono County-
Mammoth Lakes. 1-3" of snow will be possible along the Highway 395
corridor from Susanville to Gardnerville, including Reno-Sparks-
Carson City. Higher snow amounts are likely in the foothills west of
US-395 and around Virginia City, with up to 3-6". Being early in the
season, with relatively warm lake conditions, lake effect snow
downwind of Tahoe and Pyramid lakes will also be possible on
Saturday.

We will see a break in the weather Sunday and Monday as weak ridging
builds over the area. Temperatures will be very cold these days,
coldest of the season so far with highs in the 30s and low
temperatures each morning into the teens and single digits. -Hoon

.LONG TERM...Tuesday and beyond...

The system for next week could become a cut off low pressure that
keeps confidence a little lower at this time. Earlier simulations
had it missing the area to the south with recent simulations
bringing it right through the Sierra. However, looking at ensemble
outlook tools, another round of precipitation for CA/NV are looking
probable in this time frame.

If that wasn't enough, conditions continue to look favorable for an
active pattern to continue into mid-December. Strong atmospheric
river detection signals, along with an active MJO, and strong
ensemble support for a deepening trough along the west coast all
continue to point to active weather in the Sierra through the
December 6-12th time period. So, it looks like winter is here as
ordered. -Zach

.AVIATION...

Poor aviation weather conditions are expected through this evening,
including heavy snow in the mountains along with accumulating snow
and extended periods of IFR conditions at KTRK/KTVL/KMMH. Most
likely snow accumulations amounts through mid-morning are 3-6" at
KTRK/KTVL and 6-12" possible at KMMH. Expect periods of moderate to
heavy rain early this morning with MVFR conditions and a few hours
of IFR/MVFR conditions possible during the heaviest precipitation at
KRNO/KCXP. In addition to heavy snow and low visibility expect
aviation hazards to include widespread icing, mountain obscuration,
mountain wave turbulence, and the possibility of brief periods of
minor LLWS. We will see a break in the weather on Friday, although a
few light snow showers will continue over the Sierra with periods of
MVFR for KTRK/KTVL.

A colder storm will move into the region Friday night into Saturday
with much lower snow levels and impacts even to the lower elevations
in western Nevada including KRNO/KCXP. Additional snow totals will
be around 6-12" at KTRK/KTVL, 3-8" at KMMH, and 1-2" at KRNO/KCXP.
