Have issued dense smoke advisory for Mono County to account for
the low visibilities and poor air quality. Smoke plume output from
the HRRR builds another dense plume from the Ferguson and Lions
fires and pushes it across Mono County. While the dense smoke will
not be continuous periods of poor visibility and unhealthy air
quality is very likely to continue over at least the next 24

Air Quality sensors in Mammoth Lakes are again measuring air
quality in the Hazardous range. We have issued an Air Quality
Alert for Mono County, mainly near Mammoth Lakes. But, residents

unhealthy conditions returning each night until the Lions and

SHORT TERM...
West winds picked up today and helped clear out much of the smoke
around the region with most air quality sensors measuring Good to
Moderate AQI. The one exception is Mammoth where Unhealthy
conditions have returned overnight. As wind picks up today this
should continue help improve conditions there, but residents
around Mammoth and June Lakes should anticipate the possibility
of unhealthy conditions returning each night until the Lions and
Ferguson fires become less active.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect for northwestern Nevada today
with Fire Weather Watches Friday and Saturday. Winds will be the
strongest on Saturday as a rare (for August) 100+ knot jet stream
moves over the region, combined with very dry air. For more,

The persistent ridge of high pressure over the desert southwest
that delivered Reno the hottest month on record will flatten and
become less pronounced, at least for the weekend. This will allow
slightly cooler, and even drier, air to work into the region.
However, we have been so much above normal recently, this cooling
will only bring us down to right about normal for early August.
For western Nevada, this means highs in the low 90s and cooling to
the upper 50s. -Zach
LONG TERM...Sunday through Wednesday...
Very little was changed in the extended forecast this cycle. The
models are in fair agreement with the overall pattern evolution and
point to a return to well above normal temperatures.
Sunday and Monday see the trough weakening and retreating to the
north with lighter winds and near normal temperatures each day. The
presence of westerly winds should keep moisture well south of the
forecast area.
By Tuesday the operational models and ensemble members are generally
pointing to a ridge rebuilding from the southeast into the region.
This means decreased winds aloft with increased heights and
temperatures. We are likely to see highs return to some 6-8 degrees
above normal.
The model simulations build the ridge aloft in a position for
Tuesday and Wednesday such that it delays the return of significant
amounts of moisture from the southeast. This...and warming
temperatures aloft...should limit any thunderstorm potential each
day; we will have no more than 10% POPs for southern Mono County.
But we could start seeing some cumulus develop over the mountains
each afternoon. XX
AVIATION...
Increased winds Wednesday brought some relief in terms of visibility
restrictions due to smoke and haze. Today should see more of the
same...but visibility restrictions will still be common immediately
downwind from actively burning wildfires. The terminal with the best
chance of seeing reductions to visibility will be KMMH. Slantwise
visibility reductions are also possible again today.
A few storms may develop well south of Highway 50 today...but
nothing to the extent we saw the last couple of days. The chance for
KMMH or KHTH to see thunderstorm on the field is about 15% and
10%...respectively.
Winds become the story moving into the weekend. Surface gusts of 25-
30 kts are likely today and Friday east of the Sierra. Saturday
should see the strongest winds in the forecast period with surface
gusts approaching 35-40 kts and ridge winds in excess of 50 kts
during the afternoon and early evening. XX
FIRE WEATHER...
Enhanced zephyr-type winds are likely again today and Friday before
stronger winds impact the region Saturday. A dry slot moving into
the region Friday will mean very poor humidity recoveries Friday
night into Saturday morning and then again for Saturday night.
All of this adds up to a period of critical conditions each day
through Saturday. Conditions today and Friday may be a little more
localized and not quite as long-lived with many areas seeing winds
gusts up to about 30 mph. Wind prone areas will likely see
occasional gusts in excess of 30 mph. This is combined with humidity
values in the single digits up to as much as 15 percent. The
stronger gusts may be a little more widespread Friday and humidity
values will be lower. A Red Flag warning remains in effect for zones
270/278/458/450/453 for this afternoon and evening while a Fire
Weather Watch is in effect for the same zones for Friday. Gusty winds
and low humidity may cause existing fires...and any new fires..to
spread faster each day.
That brings us to what is shaping up to be the day with the most
critical conditions: Saturday. A near 115 mph jet aloft combined
with a strong surface pressure and thermal gradient (for August) and
the aforementioned dry slot will set the stage for more widespread
critical conditions...and for a longer period of time...Saturday
afternoon and evening. Wind gusts could exceed 40 mph in the wind
prone areas while humidity values drop into the single digits by
early afternoon. As mentioned...humidity recoveries will be very
poor Friday night into Saturday morning...so mid slopes may not
recover much past 20% before falling again in the daytime. We
currently have a Fire Weather Watch in place for Saturday for zones
270/272/278/458/450/453/273/459. This situation bears closely
watching as anticipated conditions Saturday could cause very rapid
fire spread. XX
