...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM EST TUESDAY...

* WHAT...Periods of light rain may change to a light wintry mix of
  snow, sleet, and rain this afternoon. Additional snow
  accumulations are expected to be a trace. A thin light glaze of
  ice is also possible before the precipitation ends this evening. 

* WHERE...The Interstate 95 corridor and the rest of the Coastal 
  Plain and Sandhills of southeastern North Carolina.

* WHEN...Until 9 AM EST Tuesday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Potentially hazardous travel conditions may
  develop this afternoon into the evening. Then, the potential for
  black ice increases with clearing late tonight.

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will continue to move south through the Carolinas
tonight. A strong storm system will develop across the lower
Mississippi Valley on Saturday, move into the Southeast on
Sunday and then move east of the Outer Banks on Monday. Another
storm system will develop off the Southeast coast late Monday
before high pressure builds into the region for Tuesday into
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 215 PM Friday...

A dry cold front continues to march across the CWA this afternoon
and is now crossing into the southeastern half of the area and will
continue to push through this afternoon. Winds are variable at this
time but all are maintaining a northerly component to the flow.
Dewpoints are solidly in the low to mid 20s. High clouds are
becoming more dense and this has cut off some insolation but we have
already achieved expected highs for the day. With that in mind, will
bump up daytime highs a degree or two for the afternoon package. Not
expecting much in the way of ceiling or visibility restrictions
overnight but we will have increasing clouds from the southwest
which will help stave off any major drop in low temperatures like we
saw last night. Expect the lowest temperatures to occur in the
northeast with mid to upper 20s there and mid 30s in the southwest
Piedmont.

For Saturday clouds will overspread the area and ceilings will lower
from southwest to northeast and this will and precipitation will
begin to occur in the form of liquid rain across the southern
counties by late morning to early afternoon. The northward advance
of the precipitation may take a while to occur as the low levels
will need to moisten significantly before precipitating. Models are
in good agreement on the onset time of the rain in the south
(between 15-18Z) but less certain across the Triad and the Triangle
but should be around 00z Sunday give or take. As far as temperatures
are concerned, daytime highs will top out in the low 40s and there
isn't much of a threat for winter p-types until after 00z which will
be addressed in the short term section of the discussion below.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 350 AM Friday...

Significant winter storm over portions of central NC still appears
possible late Saturday night through early Monday, though details on
dominant precipitation type and amounts still exists. Based on
slightly faster precip arrival, have started the watch shortly after
midnight Saturday night and expanded to capture Montgomery County.
Possible expansion of the watch to the east may occur later today if
it appears the atmosphere will remain colder longer.

High confidence a significant winter storm will impact portions of
central NC, with greatest impacts likely along and north of the I-85
corridor. Lesser confidence exists with respect to p-types and the
resultant accumulations and respective locations of each type. A
winter storm watch remains in effect for the aforementioned areas
from late Saturday night through Monday. There will likely be a very
sharp gradient in snowfall accumulations, with some locations
possibly seeing greater accumulations of sleet or freezing rain
along that gradient. Even the slightest shift in track, timing,
temperature, etc. will result in significant impacts to the
forecast.

Overview: Biggest change here is the better agreement in timing
between the models. A pair of upper level lows/troughs will develop
on Saturday, one off the Southern Rockies/Desert Southwest and the
other over the Northern High Plains/SW Canada. The former will shift
eastward then east-northeastward through the ARKLATEX and into the
TN Valley/Virginias while the latter will dive south-southeastward,
deepening over the Plains/Midwest. Expect strong moisture advection
into the Gulf Coast states and Southeast US ahead of the system
Saturday and Sunday. Cold, high pressure will dominate at the
surface over the Great Lakes region, ridging into western/central NC
through the period in a CAD setup. Meanwhile, a surface low will
develop along the Gulf Coast on Saturday in response to the upper
level system. The surface low is expected to move along the Gulf
Coast, through the panhandle of FL and northeast along and offshore
of the Carolina coast. The wedge will remain in place over NW
portions of the area. As a result, there will be a very strong
pressure gradient across NC on Sunday/Sunday night, stronger the
farther east you go.

Timing: Precipitation will likely move into central NC very slowly
from the south-southwest on Saturday, beginning as liquid across the
south for much of the day, while northern portions of central NC
could remain dry until Saturday night. Onset of snow will likely
occur after midnight Sunday in the far west/northwest portions of
the area (near the Triad). Expect the transition to wintry
precipitation eastward with time through 8 AM Sunday.

P-type: As mentioned above, a lot of uncertainty still remains with
respect to the type of wintry precipitation any given location will
see and when/how much will occur. Any small change/difference in
timing, temperature, thermal profile, etc. will impact the p-type.
As past events would suggest, a purely snow event is not likely as
there is usually a mix of wintry p-types. Expect several p-type
changes throughout the event, especially along the I-85 corridor,
with snow, sleet and freezing rain all possibilities. Regardless of
p-type, liquid equivalents could range from 1.0 inch NE to 2.3
inches SW. Greatest snowfall accumulation is expected across the
northern and northwestern piedmont (i.e. the Triad) where amounts in
the 6 to 10 inch range are increasingly likely. There will likely be
a sharp gradient in the snowfall accumulation along the I-85
corridor, as the mix of sleet and freezing rain will cut down on
snowfall totals. However, the impacts are still likely to be
significant as sleet and freezing rain accumulations in that
gradient zone would also meet winter storm warning criteria and
result in significant travel impacts. It is more important to focus
on the impacts and not amounts at this time as the impacts are the
same regardless of how much of which p-type accumulates where.

Temperatures: Highs on Saturday expected to top out in the low to
mid 40s while Sunday will be much colder in the NW, with highs
topping out in the low 30s, while the SE should reach into the low
to mid 40s again. Lows both Saturday and Sunday nights will be
similar, upper 20s to mid 30s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 250 PM Friday...

MONDAY AND TUESDAY:
The unsettled weather pattern will persist on Monday as
additional upstream energy in the form of a closed low and an
associated 70+ kt jet over the lower Mississippi Valley slowly
slips southeast into the northern Gulf Coast Monday night. The
mean trough axis doens't slip east into eastern NC until Tuesday
morning, resulting in a continued chance of light precipitation
for Monday into Monday night. The precipitation is generated by
forcing for ascent from the intensifying jet around the upper
trough, low level isentropic lift which is enhanced by surface
cyclogenesis that occurs off the Southeast coast.

Given the thermal profile, it will be difficult to get much snow
on the northwest flank of the precipitation shield but the
surface temperatures will be at or below freezing, so a
continued chance of freezing rain exists on Monday morning
northwest of Roanoke Rapids, Raleigh, or Albemarle before
temperatures crawl above freezing by midday. Additional
freezing rain accumulations on Monday morning should be minimal,
perhaps an additional glaze. Early morning temperatures on
Monday will range from 28 northwest to 36 southeast with highs
on Monday ranging from 36 in the in-situ damming region in the
Triad to 41 in the southeast. Temperatures will fall again
during the evening, potentially allowing the precipitation to
end as some light freezing rain or drizzle on Monday evening as
the precipitation shield slips southeast. All of the
precipitation should be over by daybreak Tuesday with lows down
into the 20 to 25 range across the Triad where a snow cover is
still expected, with lows in the 25 to 30 degree range in the
eastern Piedmont to around freezing in the Southeast.

As a northwest flow develops aloft on the back side of the departing
trough, skies will clear and some sunshine is expected on
Tuesday. Highs will likely be chilled by the snow cover in the
Triad, only ranging in the upper 30s with highs in the lower
40s elsewhere. Lows on Tuesday night should fall into the lower
to mid 20s with clear skies and even some upper teens in the
Triad where snow cover is likely to persist.

WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY: Wednesday will be dominated by high
pressure at the surface and ridging aloft. There are actually
two surface highs in play. A weaker one to the south which will
be dissolving in favor of a stronger high to the north which
will move over New England and into a favorable spot for cold
air damming by Thursday. Therefore clear skies on Wednesday and
plenty of sunshine with highs in the 40s. Clouding up by
Thursday morning, particularly in the NW Piedmont, becoming
cloudy throughout the day as northeasterly winds lock in cold
air damming. Have come down well below guidance on high
temperatures given this signal. Highs in the low 40s across the
NW Piedmont with low 50s in the southeast. Precipitation could
begin by Thursday afternoon which will only further lock in the
wedge. At this time, looks like this will be an all liquid rain
event as surface temperatures bottom out at 34 degrees in the NW
Piedmont by early Friday morning.

.AVIATION /20Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 100 PM Friday...

24 Hour TAF period: VFR conditions continue over the forecast area
even as a cold front moves through. As it does, the only affect on
aviation will be with regards to winds as they become more variable
as the front moves through with the occasional gust to 15 kts.
Otherwise just some intermittent high clouds over the area. With dry
air in place, not expecting any sub-VFR ceilings or visibilities
overnight. By Saturday afternoon, expect rain to begin approaching
from the south reaching KFAY by 15z but not advancing to northern
terminals until after the end of the TAF period.

Long term: Adverse conditions expected as a winter storm moves into
central NC from the south. Expect the greatest impacts from winter
weather at KINT, KGSO and KRDU. Impacts will be less at KFAY and
KRWI as the primary form of precipitation here will be rain. Expect
mostly snow at KINT and KGSO beginning Sunday morning and lasting
through Monday morning. There will be some chance for mixed
precipitation here as well but the primary type will be snow. For
KRDU the time line is similar but with much more uncertainty
regarding p-type. There is a greater possibility for more
significant freezing rain here. Impacts from this storm will end by
Monday afternoon and conditions will gradually improve returning to
VFR for the middle of the week.
