.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic high pressure will extend over the Mid Atlantic region today,
as an intensifying low pressure center tracks northward just off the
Carolina coast, bringing wintry precipitation to eastern North
Carolina today and tonight. Frigid air will surge into the region
Thursday through Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 325 AM Wednesday

...Winter Storm Warning in effect for counties east of I-95. Winter
Weather Advisory in effect for counties between US highway 1 and I-
95...

Current temperatures across the area in the single digits to lower
teens. Don't expect temperatures to fall too much further as some
high clouds are beginning to filter in from the southwest which
should help to blanket the area with the exception of the far
northeast which may have another hour or two of potential falling
temps.

Starting to see the strongest portions of the upper level jet stream
working towards the base of the longwave trough. Once it digs to the
bottom we will begin to see the quick development of the coastal low
pressure system that will run along the eastern seaboard, and bring
winter weather to eastern North Carolina.

Currently, the biggest forecast problem is how far west the snow
will go. The cutoff line will be abrupt with a very sharp gradient
between getting no snow and advisory criteria. The last several runs
of the models have all trended westward and so to account for the
uncertainty in the forecast we have decided to add another tier of
counties to the west to the Winter Weather Advisory. In addition we
have upgraded counties along and east of I-95 to a Winter Storm
Warning.

Accumulations: Starting from the east expect 2-4 inches east in far
eastern counties. Along and in the immediate vicinity of I-95,
expect 1-3 inches with amounts towards the high end of the range in
the north and towards 1 inch in the southern half of the corridor.
Expect 1-2 inches immediately west of I-95 and 0-1 inches along the
US highway 1 corridor including the Triangle. All points west of
there are expected to get nothing although a dusting is possible in
the southwestern Piedmont.

Timing: Expect snow to begin across the southeastern counties around
or just after 18z and push northward from there overspreading the
area by 3z or so. Snow will taper off everywhere with the exception
of the extreme east and northeastern counties by 12 z Thursday
morning and then exit there a little later.

Confidence: The lowest confidence with this system is on the western
edge of the snow. Exactly where that sets up is hard to nail down.
We have high confidence that by far the bulk of the precipitation
will fall as snow. In the extreme east, NAM forecast soundings are
hinting that a small layer of the atmosphere could approach 0
degrees but at this time no warm nose is in the forecast soundings
and there is plenty of moisture in the snow growth zone. One thing
that drops our confidence in the snowfall totals is the extremely
dry air at the surface. There will be some sublimation occurring in
order to moisten up the low levels enough for snow to make it to the
ground. This could cut back snow totals or cause some places in the
west not to see any snow at all even if it is being depicted on
radar higher up in the atmosphere. It looks like any potential snow
bands that would produce significantly higher amounts of snow will
set up to the east of the forecast area.

.SHORT TERM /Thursday through Thursday night/...
As of 220 AM Wednesday...

Clouds will be clearing out of the northeast CWA in the morning, as
the arctic air pours into the area, sending thicknesses down to 55-
60 m below normal, supporting highs of 28-35 (which will threaten
the record low maximum temp for that date at GSO). Dewpoints will be
falling to near or below zero, and only a lingering NW breeze to
keep the low levels stirred Thu night will keep temps from plunging
that cold, under clear skies. Lows 7-14. -GIH

.LONG TERM /Friday through Tuesday/...
As of 255 AM Wednesday...

Fri-Sat: The mid level polar low will wobble over the St. Lawrence
Valley before drifting NE to the Canadian Maritimes. The low level
"arctic express" will continue into Sat, with projections of
thicknesses and 2m temps that remain much below climatology. Friday
will likely be the coldest day of this stretch, with highs just 26-
34, once again threatening record low maxes. Sat won't be much
better as the thermal trough holds over the region, although some
modification of the surface air mass will start to take place.
Expect continued clear skies, save for a few clouds Fri evening as a
weak mid level passes by. Highs Sat 27-36, after morning lows of 7-
14.

Sun-Tue: The surface high over E VA/NC early Sun will shift east and
offshore by Sun night, although a cool stable ridge will continue to
extend back into NC. As the 850 mb anticyclone over the N Central
Gulf early Sun moves ENE to off the SE Coast through Sun night,
southwesterly overrunning flow will commence, bringing increasing
clouds from W to E across central NC Sun/Sun night. A Pacific wave
crossing the Rockies Sat/Sat night will deepen over the Plains and
Miss Valley Sun into Mon, allowing its attending full-latitude
frontal system to approach from the west. Models indicate a chance
of light precip entering W NC Mon morning, expanding east across the
area through Mon/Mon night. There remains a chance that enough of a
chilly stable pool will linger over the Piedmont with the onset of
light precip generated by increasing mid level DPVA and low level

Mon morning. But the growing warm nose aloft should be steadily
strengthening such that precip should change to mostly cold rain by
lunchtime. Otherwise, expect a trend to higher pops in later
forecasts once timing becomes better nailed down, and the pattern
would suggest that we could see a soaking rain. Rain may linger into
Tue especially east, based on latest guidance with a slower mid
level trough. The trend should then be toward clearing skies and
moderating temps with rising heights aloft. Expect continued below

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 120 AM Wednesday...

24 Hour TAF Period: VFR conditions across the area this morning.
Expect high clouds to begin rolling in from the southwest. Later in
the day a low pressure system will move up the Carolina coast and
bring the potential for snow into the eastern half of the forecast
area. Have included snow in the TAFs for RWI, FAY and RDU with RWI
the most likely to see snowfall for an extended period of time.
Expect this to start in the south around or just after 18z and
expanding northward by 21z. Snow will continue into early Thursday
morning. While snowing, visibility values will deteriorate
potentially as low as a mile before improving after 12z Thursday.
Ceilings will also dip to at least MVFR levels during this time.
Winds will be out of the north at around 5 kts.

Long Term: Some wind gusts of 15-20 kts can be expected after the
storm exits on Thursday. Otherwise expect mainly VFR conditions
through the rest of the period.
