An exiting storm system will track northeast towards New England
today. Frigid air will surge into the region Thursday through
Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 230 AM Thursday...

Winter storm is pushing through areas north and east of the Triangle
at this time. The very well depicted snow/no snow line will march
eastward over the next several hours before exiting to the
northeast. Areas in the northeastern counties will have the
potential to see some of the highest snow totals of the day with
storm totals of 4-6 inches possible. Look for snow to end in the
northeast around 12z.

In the wake of the storm, winds will kick up considerably today
gusting to 20-25 kts at times. With as lightly packed as the snow
is, this will cause some blowing snow at times. As winds continue
into the the evening and overnight hours tonight into Friday
morning, wind chills will become a factor, dropping to around 0
degrees across the northern tier of counties with single digits
elsewhere. Temperatures will hover around plus or minus freezing
with upper 20s to low 30s across the north and mid 30s in the south.
Lows Friday morning in the upper single digits to low teens.

As temperatures will remain near or below freezing for the next
couple of days, black ice will be possible and will be covered with
a Winter Weather Advisory.

.SHORT TERM /Friday through Saturday night/...
As of 310 AM Thursday...

The mid level polar low will wobble NE over the St. Lawrence Valley
and Canadian Maritimes during this period, while the surface thermal
trough extends down through NC. The relentless feed of cold air will
persist through Sat night as Arctic high pressure builds into and
over the area from the NNW, settling over E VA and E NC by daybreak
Sun. Expect generally clear skies. Thicknesses are projected to be
around 70 m below normal, supportive of highs in the upper 20s to
lower 30s and lows of 6-16. -GIH

.LONG TERM /Sunday through Wednesday/...
As of 345 AM Thursday...

We'll finally start to warm up a bit (relatively speaking) as mid
level heights rebound in the wake of the departing polar trough. The
surface high over our region early Sun will shift east and offshore
by Sun night, bringing about rising thicknesses, although a cool
stable ridge will continue to extend back into NC. The 850 mb ridge
centered over FL early Sun will move ENE and offshore Sun, resulting
in the onset of southwesterly overrunning flow and increasing clouds
from W to E across central NC Sun/Sun night. The Pacific-source wave
moving ESE through the central and southern Plains Sun looks likely
to merge with the polar stream to culminate in a full-latitude
trough and accompanying surface front that approaches from the west
late Sun night and Mon morning. Confidence in precip ahead of and
along this front has increased, and expect high chance to likely
pops Mon afternoon through evening. NC should stay in the cool
sector with models showing the triple point low holding to our S and
SE as the front passes by. Model thermal profiles, showing
increasing warm air advection up and over the residual cold stable
pool at the surface, suggest that the precip will start as a light
wintry mix of primarily light sleet mixed with a little snow and/or
freezing rain Mon morning, before precip rates pick up and the
warming aloft increases in depth and overtakes the cooler surface
air, resulting in a trend to just a chilly rain by lunchtime as pops
rise. Rain is likely to be moving out of eastern sections by Tue
morning, followed by clearing skies and rebounding mid level heights
as ridging moves in from the west. We may see a few clouds Wed if
the GFS and its mid level wave dropping through the Deep South come
to pass, but overall there is insufficient moisture return at any
time for anything but mostly sunny/clear skies midday Tue through
Wed. Highs will be in the 30s Sun, rising to the mid 40s to lower
50s, close to seasonal normals, Mon-Wed. -GIH

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 100 AM Thursday...

24 Hour TAF Period: Snow is exiting KRDU and KFAY at this time so we
expect an improvement in visibilities very soon at these locations.
Further east, KRWI is still socked into the snow bands and this will
continue several more hours before finally letting up closer to 9 or
10Z. As the storm exits some every gusty conditions are expected
with winds gusting to 20-25 kts at times across the board. Late this
morning a brief period of low level wind shear could be observed
mainly at KRDU and KFAY between 10-12Z but can't rule it out
everywhere. Mixing to the surface and general gustiness should take
over by 12z however. Once the storm exits to the northeast, expect
VFR conditions to return for the remainder of the period and the
rest of the long term as well.
