extending from 6 miles west of Roanoke Rapids to 11 miles west of
Halifax to 9 miles northwest of Nashville, moving east at 35 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to 
         roofs, siding, and trees.

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak cold front will cross the area this afternoon. High pressure
will build into the region from the north Monday through Tuesday, as
an upper level trough holds overhead.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 320 PM Sunday...

Weak cold front accompanied by a low over the NW Piedmont is easing
eastward through central NC, just ahead of the mid level shortwave
trough crossing WV down into NW NC. Strong storms have developed
largely as suggested by morning CAMs, forming within a marginal to
moderately unstable (MUCAPE 500-1000 J/kg) environment supported by
strong deep layer shear of 50-55 kts and high low-level lapse rates
of 7.5-8.5 C/km. The dry punch noted on WV imagery has kept coverage
down a bit with weak mid level lapse rates, although the wet bulb
profile is marginally steep just beneath the mixed phase layer, and
we've seen a few reports of pea to half inch size hail. Otherwise,
the risk of damaging straight line winds persist for the next few
hours, mainly across the northern CWA near the weak dynamic
contribution to ascent. Will trend down pops in the evening, keeping
clouds and isolated showers in the NE where low level moisture will
persist as the cooler air spills in from the north behind the front.
Expect lows from the mid 50s W to lower 60s E. -GIH

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 335 PM Sunday...

The shortwave trough over WV to NW NC this afternoon will weaken and
shear as it tracks NE, with the trough axis becoming re-established
to our west as energy dives into the base through Mon. The surface
front will push to our E and S, with a weak low near the S coast of
NC, and the resulting surface flow from the N and NE will likely
keep drawing low level moisture into NE sections, producing mostly
cloudy skies there. Areawide, though, diurnal mixing and residual
moisture will result in partly to mostly cloudy skies (mostly flat
stratocu) through much of the day. Low level lapse rates are
expected to increase sufficiently to bring about a risk of sprinkles
or light showers, especially over the far W sections of the forecast
area, near the weak DPVA. The clouds and cool air advection will
hold down surface temps, and expect highs from the low 70s NE to
near 80 SW. Lows mostly in the mid 50s Mon night with partly cloudy
skies lingering as the trough axis holds nearby. -GIH

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 215 PM Saturday...

A series of shortwaves aloft will progress through the region
through the work week. The first, remnants of the upper low over
Central NC, will deamplify as it shifts off to the northeast. The
second will swing through the Great Lakes, approaching and moving
through Central NC Wednesday night/Thursday. A third, will move
through the region on the second's heels on Friday. Periods of
showers are possible with each of these shortwaves, though
confidence and chances are low at this time as uncertainty remains
on the high side in terms of precipitation. High pressure ridging
southwestward into the region on Tuesday and Wednesday may help keep
the weather dry during that time. As the ridge shifts off the coast
and away from the area, west-southwesterly flow, becoming more
southwesterly as the surface trough progresses east, will advect
much warmer and more moist air into the region for Thursday and
Friday. A return to well above normal temperatures (highs in the mid
80s to low 90s and lows in the mid to upper 60s) is expected Friday
through Sunday as the next frontal system develops over the Midwest.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 240 PM Sunday...

The most immediate threat to aviation interests is the isolated to
scattered storms impacting mainly northern portions of central NC,
including GSO/RDU/RWI, for the rest of the afternoon. A period of
MVFR to IFR conditions and gusts of 35-50 kts are likely in and near
any storms, and a damaging gust over 60 kts along with quarter size
hail may also occur with the strongest storms. The threat will be
diminishing at GSO by 20z, but will persist at RDU/RWI through about
00z. Otherwise, a few showers may impact other locations in central
NC, through early evening, especially in the NE, but VFR conditions
will prevail. That will change overnight, however, as a front shifts
E and SE through the area, bringing a wind from the N and NE and a
risk of MVFR conditions late tonight, particularly to RDU/RWI/FAY
with a much lower risk at INT/GSO, which may remain VFR overnight. A
period of IFR cigs are also possible late tonight through mid
morning Mon at RWI. These MVFR-IFR clouds will lift through the
morning Mon, and VFR conditions are expected to return by 16z
areawide.

Looking beyond 18z Mon, cigs should be VFR through Mon, although a
few showers are possible mainly at INT/GSO and at RWI during the
afternoon. Sub-VFR cigs are expected to redevelop late Mon night
lasting into Tue morning, primarily at RWI, with a damp NE low level
wind. VFR conditions should return by late Tue morning areawide,
then VFR should rule through the end of the week, although a few
afternoon sprinkles may occur each afternoon. -GIH

UNTIL 445 PM EDT...

At 340 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a line of strong
thunderstorms along a line extending from 6 miles south of Ebony to
near Franklinton. Movement was east at 35 mph.

Half inch hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with
these storms.

Locations impacted include...
Roanoke Rapids, Henderson, Louisburg, Warrenton, Halifax,
Franklinton, Norlina, Littleton, Kittrell and Enfield.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Seek shelter in a nearby building or vehicle. Wind gusts as high as
50 mph are capable of knocking down small or weakened trees and
blowing around trash cans, potted plants, lawn furniture and other
light outdoor objects.

Boaters on the open water and those camping outdoors are especially
vulnerable to the dangers of lightning. Remember, lightning can
strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear
thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to
safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.
