.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the area will shift east and offshore this
afternoon, in advance of a an upper level disturbance and attendant
sfc cold front that will move east through the area overnight.
Colder high pressure will follow and build across the middle
Atlantic states Monday and Monday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 330 AM Sunday...

Shortwave trough over the Central Plains this morning will eject
quickly east today, within the progressive quasi-zonal flow aloft in
place, and will cross the southern Appalachians this evening and
then through the southern Mid-Atlantic region overnight. A cold
front and weak surface low will accompany this feature, with the
surface low filling as it progresses east through the area.

Sunny skies this morning will become increasingly milky as jet-
stream associated cirrus expands NEWD and fills in in response to
the strengthening 120 kt upper jet streak/jet divergence across the
area. While the deepest moisture and forcing stays north of the
area, a very narrow, transient zone of modest 850-700mb moisture
advection and lift traversing the area between 21z to 03z, will lead
to a broken/overcast 2-5 kft  stratocu layer, along with a quick
passing shower and/or sprinkles. But as just as quick as the clouds
rolled in, abrupt post-frontal cold dry air advection will lead to
west-east clearing between 06 to 12z.

SWLY flow in advance of the front should yield daytime highs a good
2 to 3 degrees warmer than Saturday. Highs in the lower 50s NW to
upper 50s SE. CAA during the 06 to 12z will govern overnight lows.
Lows ranging from lower/mid 30s NW to near 40 SE.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 330 AM Sunday...

Zonal flow aloft atop cool surface high pressure building east
across the region will provide dry and sunny/clear sky conditions,
along with seasonable temps on Christmas Eve. Highs ranging from
upper 40s/near 50 north to mid 50s south. Lows in the upper 20s to
lower 30s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 255 AM Sunday...

The long term period should begin much quieter, with zonal flow
aloft and high pressure taking control. A gradual warming trend
should persist through mid week with shower chances following suit
by Thursday afternoon/evening as the area of high pressure slides
offshore and a developing sfc low occludes as it rotates through the
central CONUS, allowing southwesterly flow aloft to establish.

Christmas Day: Surface high pressure is expected to strengthen east
of the Appalachians on Tuesday as it slowly slides eastward into the
Atlantic. This will allow clear skies, variable but calm winds, and
near normal conditions to persist. High temperatures should range
from the upper-40s (north) to lower 50s (south). Christmas night,
lows will slide, settling near freezing area wide.

Wed - Sat: A more amplified pattern takes shape later in the week,
with a digging and broadening upper-level trough expected across the
western CONUS and a sub-tropical ridging pattern likely to build in
toward the southeastern CONUS. A sfc low looks to strengthen and
occlude as it accelerates northeastward across the corn belt states,
dragging a cold front west to east late in the week, likely stalling
it near the NC/SC coastline over the weekend. This will allow for
southwesterly flow to re-establish at all levels, resulting in
warming sfc temps and dewpoints through the end of the work-week,
with modeled PWAT values expected to surpass 1.5 inch amounts by
Friday morning. Still some model divergence in terms of
precipitation arrival and accumulation amounts (which looks to once
again be in the 1 to 3 inch range), with the ECMWF remaining roughly
12 hours slower compared to the GFS/CMC. Either way, the later half
of Thursday, all day Friday (with a few Tstorms possible), and at
least the first part of the weekend looks warm and wet, with
possibly a residual wedge of high pressure keeping some cooler
(upper 40s) temps present across the northwestern Piedmont on
Thursday afternoon. 60s and even a few 70 degree readings will be
possible Friday and Saturday, with cooler and drier high pressure
arriving on Sunday.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 640 AM Sunday...

Patchy fog this morning across the Sandhills will quickly dissipate
after sunrise. Expect predominately VFR parameters across central NC
through 21z. A brief period of MVFR ceilings and light rain
showers/sprinkles is expected this evening as a quick moving upper
disturbance passes just north of central NC. The potential for MVFR
ceilings appears highest at KINT and KGSO, and possibility at KRDU.
Any sub-VFR ceilings this evening will quickly scatter out via post-
frontal dry cold air advection spreading west to east across the
area between 06 to 12z Monday.

For Monday through Wednesday, anticipate VFR conditions. The next
threat for sub VFR ceilings may occur Thursday into Thursday night
as an area low pressure affects the region.
