A cold front moving southeast through the area will stall near the NC/SC border later this morning through early Wednesday. Cool dry high pressure will return for Thursday and Friday. Another cold front will cross the area on Saturday, before much cooler and drier air arrives on Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 325 AM Tuesday... Latest sfc observations indicates surface cold front starting to spill SE across the NC mtns. Latest 00z/16 model guidance hasn't deviated much, showing very little precip/showers along the front as its progresses into southern portions of the state by mid to late morning, where it is forecast to become quasi-stationary through late tonight/early Wednesday. Even with daytime heating and resultant weak destabilization south of the front, models show very little precip/convection front through the afternoon. However, models indicate rain chances will actually increase and spread east during the evening and overnight hours, in response to increasing mid/upper level forcing in the form of strengthening upper jet divergence in the entrance region of a 140 kt jet streak across the Mid-Atlantic and DPVA from low-amplitude disturbances ejecting NE across the region, within the confluent SWLY flow aloft between the subtropical ridge over the western Atlantic and the amplifying long wave trough across the NE US. Models also hint that the resultant lift could lead to weak sfc wave development along the stalled front zone. Have capped pops to likely for now, but future updates may need to introduce categorical pops across the area. Expect rainfall amounts to range from a tenth to a quarter of an inch across the area. North of the front, a secondary meso sfc high centered over the DELMARVA region will ridge south across the northern two-thirds of the area. This will set-up a sharp north-south temperature gradient across the area, with the cooler NE flow supporting a canopy of low clouds across the area, with very little recovery from morning lows. Highs ranging from 65 to 70 north of the front, to 75 to 80 south. Lows Tuesday night ranging from mid 50s north to lower 60s south. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... Highs in the lower 70s to mid 70s. Strong CAA Wednesday night will drive overnight lows, ranging from lower 40s NW to mid/upper 40s SE. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 340 AM Tuesday... To begin the period, upper-level ridging will fill in behind the departing mid to upper-level trough rotating into the Atlantic, with an open-wave trough developing over the Rocky Mountain States. At the surface, a cooler and drier continental area of high pressure will settle in through the end of the work-week, only to be disrupted by a stronger cold front, likely to pass across central North Carolina by early next weekend. Thursday through Friday AM: With a slightly modified continental polar type airmass overhead, afternoon highs are expected to remain 8 to 11 degrees below normal (low to mid 70s) early in the period. In the afternoons, highs will top out in the upper-50s to lower-60s, while overnight lows settle in the low to mid 40s. The coldest temperatures are likely to arrive just before sunrise on Friday with the center of the high overhead. Rain chances will remain near zero, with only intermittent high clouds possible through the period. Friday PM through Tuesday: By Friday evening, southerly flow will return briefly ahead of the cold front digging south out of the Ohio Valley. This will allow temperatures to rise gradually, beginning the day Saturday morning in the lower 50s before topping out near 70 with a blanket of clouds overhead. The rather impressive cold front will introduce rain showers as early as pre-dawn Saturday, with the bulk of the rain arriving Saturday mid to late afternoon. Skies will begin to clear under a CAA regime by Sunday morning, allowing lows to once again dip into the 40s under a building area of high pressure. This high looks to solidify itself over the area early next week, introducing the possibility of a first light frost across the northwestern Piedmont by pre-dawn Monday. && .AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... As of 742 AM Tuesday... 24 Hour TAF period: A cold front moving through the area this morning will stall out across southern portions of the area through early Wednesday. Precipitation along the front will be very spotty through the afternoon. IFR to MVFR aviation conditions are expected to lift to VFR by late morning. Ceilings are then expected to deteriorate to IFR to LIFR during the evening and overnight hours with showers developing across the area as a series of upper level disturbances track atop the stalled frontal zone. Long Term: VFR conditions will return from north to south during the day on Wednesday as the front finally settles south, allowing drier and cooler air to advects into the area from the north.
