Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Raleigh NC 740 PM EDT Fri Sep 28 2018 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front will settle slowly southeastward through North Carolina tonight. High pressure will extend into the region from the northwest and north through the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 250 PM Friday... Latest 17z sfc analysis coupled with visible satellite imagery shows a surface cold front situated WSW to ESE across the northern portions of Central NC, sinking slowly to the south, likely to overtake Raleigh NC by 19z (3pm). Behind the front, dewpoints continue to fall into the low to mid 60s under a light northwesterly wind and cluttered skies. Convection has remained rather subdued along the front thus far, primarily thanks to a lack in available instability, so have trended POPs a bit lower and slower. Best chance of seeing an isolated to scattered thunderstorm will remain primarily along and east of Interstate 95, where temperatures were able to heat into the mid to upper 80s, and dewpoints remain in the low to mid 70s. Strongest storms, if they form, will be capable of producing heavy rainfall which may lead to isolated ponding of water. Overnight, the front will continue to sink south, with scattered clouds remaining overhead. This will allow for some pockets of stratus and fog to develop, albeit exact positions and intensity a bit uncertain due to the influence of the upper-level cloud deck. Best chance of seeing some pockets of dense fog should remain in the northwest Piedmont, where better clearing will likely take place (albeit moisture may be a bit more lacking). Lows tonight will dip into the lower 60s (North) to near 70 (South). && .SHORT TERM /SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT/... As of 310 PM Friday... The cold front will continue to drift southeastward on Saturday, sinking just south of the NC/SC state border by sunrise. Behind the front, a cooler and drier area of high pressure will edge into central NC from the north, providing a rather pleasant (and mostly dry) start to the weekend. Can't rule out a spare shower or two in areas close to the state boundary, but anything that does form should remain short-lived and isolated at best. Afternoon high temperatures will be three to five degrees cooler than those experienced on Friday, with upper-70s likely across the northern Piedmont and highs in the low to mid 80s prevalent in areas across the south. Lows will once again bottom out in the low to mid 60s. && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 215 PM Friday... Subtropical ridge anchored across the southeastern states will dominate through much of the upcoming week, likely resulting in a prolonged period of mostly dry conditions. Medium/long range model guidance hint at some weak shortwave disturbances circumventing around the western/northwestern periphery of the upper ridge, reasonably close enough to possibly result in a few showers across the western and northern portions of the piedmont by mid to late week. However, given the strength of the mid/upper ridge(~590 dm at H5), will leave forecast dry until it becomes more evident. Moderation of sfc high across the area will allow for temperatures to warm back into the lower to mid 80s by Tuesday/Wednesday, with the potential for some upper 80s across the Sandhills and southern coastal plain counties. && .AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... As of 740 PM Friday... VFR conditions will hold across central NC through the rest of the evening, but much of the area will then see development of adverse aviation conditions overnight, with cigs dropping to IFR and vsbys to MVFR/IFR at all sites except perhaps FAY, which will see the lowest chance of sub-VFR conditions tonight. MVFR to IFR fog is most likely at RDU with a slightly lower chance at INT/GSO/RWI 06z-12z. IFR cigs are most likely at RDU/FAY/RWI 08z-14z, with a slightly lower risk at INT and even lower at FAY, although FAY may see a stray shower or isolated storm late tonight. Any sub-VFR conditions will lift and improve to VFR by 15z, with VFR conditions lasting through Sat, and little to no chance of showers and storms. Looking beyond 00z Sun, with high pressure building in from the north over the next few days, VFR conditions will dominate, with the exception of a chance of sub-VFR cigs at INT/GSO late Mon night into Tue morning as the high pressure area shifts off the Northeast coast, inducing a moist onshore flow into NC.
