Cold front has moved westward faster than expected with a more
aggressive development of lower clouds and some patchy to areas
of fog. Updated grids following the general idea in the HRRR but
hastened development of low clouds. The HRRR has been a couple of
hours too slow with development of clouds. Front will stall
across Baca and northern Las Animas counties. Cooler air will be
over much of Pueblo and into extreme eastern Fremont County.
Northernly flow could limit development of fog in El Paso County.

The Red Flag Warning that was in effect for today has been allowed
to expire. Conditions are no longer meeting criteria. It remains
windy and dry, though, so caution to avoid wildfire starts needs
to continue.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday)
Issued at 354 PM MDT Sun Mar 25 2018

Cold front has pushed into southeast CO with east winds and higher
dew points remaining entrenched across the lower Arkansas River
valley.  Farther west, along the I-25 corridor, moisture has been
more shallow and even with east to southeast winds in some places we
are still hitting Red Flag criteria.  Have opted to pull down the
Red Flag warning for Crowley, Otero and Bent counties for the
remainder of this afternoon where humidity values are likely to
remain too high. Elsewhere, will maintain the current highlight as
Red Flags are progged to verify.

For tonight...front back doors back into the eastern plains and
should see stratus develop after 06z.  Could even see some areas of
drizzle across Kiowa, Prowers, and portions of northern El Paso
counties towards morning as moisture deepens. Elsewhere areas of fog
will be possible, mainly along/north of highway 50.  Will have to
monitor Kiowa and Prowers counties for possibility of dense fog
towards morning.

Stratus and fog should burn off by late morning.  With the
approaching upper trof out west, should see showers move into the
mountains during the afternoon, and develop along the frontal
boundary across the plains, particularly along the Palmer Divide by
late afternoon. Model soundings show sufficient instability to
warrant some isolated thunder in the grids.  Have cooled off MaxT
grids across the plains quite a bit in light of today's model
performance and likelihood that it will remain cooler behind the
front.  Went closer to the Met Guidance and other high res model
output. Meanwhile the San Luis valley may see near critical fire
weather conditions return Monday afternoon. The mitigating factor
appears to be the winds as gradient aloft decreases some with
incoming upper trof and may only get an hour or two of gusts to
around 25 mph. Will hold off on issuing another fire weather
highlight and let later shifts get a closer look.  Main brunt of the
system will come through Monday night bringing the potential for a
widespread precipitation event to much of the plains (see discussion

Active meteorological conditions over the forecast district are
still expected from Monday evening into Tuesday and then possibly
again from later Wednesday into Wednesday night as well as
during portions of Easter weekend.

Recent forecast model soundings, longer term computer simulations
and PV/Precipitable water analysis continue to indicate that the
highest potential of widespread precipitation during the longer
term should be realized from Monday evening into Tuesday.

Latest longer term trends(initially depicting a healthy upper
system interacting with a moist north-northeasterly surface
surge) support the potential for significant snow as well as some
blowing snow and even some thunder-snow as well as colder
temperatures over many locations(especially higher terrain
locations) from Monday evening into Tuesday morning, therefore
WFO Pueblo has issued an early Spring Winter Storm Watch from
Monday evening into Tuesday morning for the western Mosquito range
and eastern Lake county, the eastern Sawatch mountains, eastern
Chaffee county, the La Garita mountains, the upper Rio Grande
valley, the eastern San Juan Mountains, the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains, northwestern Fremont county, the Wet Mountains as well
as Teller and Huerfano counties.

Elsewhere, many lower elevations(outside of the far southeastern
Colorado plains), may also experience some accumulating snow
during this time-frame. As always, WFO Pueblo will monitor closely
and issue/revise winter weather highlights/forecasts as needed.

Then, moderating temperatures in combination with unsettled
conditions(although with precipitation not as widespread or
intense as the Monday evening into Tuesday system) at times are
projected from Wednesday into next weekend as additional
relatively quick-moving upper systems impact the forecast
district.

The highest potential for gusty winds during the longer term
should be realized from later Friday into Friday night, while
coolest temperatures should be noted from Tuesday into Thursday
and possibly Easter Sunday, while warmest conditions are
anticipated Saturday.

Wet, spring storm headed this way. Storm is already advecting
widespread low clouds into the eastern Colorado plains.  This
moisture will continue to advect westward toward the mountains
overnight resulting in widespread IFR to LIFR CIGS and local
IFR to LIFR VSBYS overnight into early Monday.  The low clouds
will retreat some during the day Monday but will come back in
accompanied by widespread rain and snow Monday evening. This will
start along the Palmer Divide during the late afternoon and then
spread southward quickly during the evening. This includes the
KCOS and KPUB terminals. KPUB will start picking up LIFR clouds
around 07z or so according to hi res models. It should then
dissipate around 16z or so Monday. KCOS will have a bit of a
northerly component to the wind off of the Palmer Divide so the
low clouds may not be as bad there. Still, probably some patchy
IFR/LIFR stuff developing vicinity around 10z or so also lasting
until around 16z or so. Both terminals will see widespread low
clouds and precipitation develop Monday evening. For KALS, maybe
not too much going on through the forecast period as the storm
will tend to favor the eastern slope areas. So, just VFR expected
there for the next 24 hours.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Areas of fog and patchy drizzle will be possible across portions
of the southeast plains near the Colorado Kansas border overnight.
Visibilities may drop to less than a mile at times across
portions of Kiowa and Prowers counties towards Monday morning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Monday night and Tuesday, a spring storm system will move southward
across Colorado. There is the potential for moderate to locally
heavy snowfall accumulations Monday night and Tuesday morning
over the mountains, Palmer Divide and southern Interstate 25
corridor. Precipitation will fall mainly as rain for much of the
southeast plains. Isolated embedded thunderstorms will be possible
Monday night which could lead to locally intense snowfall rates.

Another quick moving system will bring isolated to scattered
showers to south central and southeast Colorado Wednesday night
and Thursday. Precipitation amounts look light at this point.
