Currently... Water vapor imagery and upper air analysis reveals an upper level ridge shifting east out of the Rockies as a progressive trough advances east behind it into the Great Basin. GOES-16 Derived Motion Winds highlight a 150+ knot WSW to ENE oriented 250 mb jet pushing east across southern California and northern Arizona into far southwest Colorado. Mid to upper level clouds in association with the trough have spread across western Colorado and into the western half of the CWA. At the surface, winds are generally light to breezy across most of the plains. Winds are increasing across the higher terrain, gusting as high as 30 knots through mountain passes. Temperatures are in the 20s across the plains and single digits to low 30s in the high valleys. Today and Tonight... The aforementioned trough is forecast to continue east across the Rockies today, with the trough axis being centered over central Colorado by midnight and clearing eastern Colorado by around 6 AM Friday. Upper level forcing associated with the trough and left jet exit region along with favorable orographic lift will force the development of snow across the Continental Divide starting early this afternoon and lasting through the evening, with the heaviest snow falling during the evening hours. Through the end of tonight, 2- 5 inches can be expected across the Continental Divide. Less widespread snow will also fall across the eastern mountains during the evening, with only an inch or two expected. Snow will end across the southwest and eastern mountains during the early morning hours on Friday, but continue across the central mountains during the day Friday (see discussion below). The trough will also bring strong winds to the higher terrain, with wind gusts as high as 55 mph possible, especially in the vicinity of the Sawatch Range. The strong winds will cause blowing snow and reduced visibility. Given the expected accumulating snow today into Friday along with strong winds, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the central mountains from 2 PM today through 2 PM Friday. Considering the fast motion of the system and potent westerly downslope flow, no precip is expected across the plains. The upper level system will deepen a surface low over east-central Colorado during the day Thursday, which will progress east during the night. As the low deepens, winds will strengthen over the far southeast plains today, gusting as high as 30 mph. Winds across the rest of the plains will generally remain below 15 mph today. As the low moves east, northwest winds will increase across all of the plains to 15-20 mph tonight. It will bring very windy conditions to all of the area Saturday into Sunday morning. Next week should be mainly dry with temps around seasonable values. At the beginning of this period, Friday, a trough will be moving over the region and some modest snow will be ongoing over the central mountains early in the day. This system will move east away from the area by later Friday, and snow will decrease over the central mountain region, but will likely not end, as a second stronger system will be on it heels. It will be breezy plains/windy mountains over the region Friday, although it will be relatively mild as max temps will be in the 50s to mostly 60s across the lower elevations and 40s in the valleys. By late Friday and into Saturday, a more substantial system will be moving across the region, with the main trough axis coming across early Saturday evening. This system will bring strong winds to all the region, with heavy wind driven snow across the central mountains. The snow over the central mountains will likely last into early Sunday morning. 8-12" of additional snow will be likely. Snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches are expected with this storm, with highest amounts in the central mountains. Snow is also possible across the Sangre De Cristo Mountains this evening, with a couple of inches expected. The storm system will also bring strong winds to the high terrain, with gusts to 55 mph possible in the central mountains. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday Snow will be ongoing across the central mountains Friday morning. The intensity of the snow will decrease as the day progresses Friday, but will increase once again late Friday evening and potentially become heavy on Saturday and Saturday night. The snow will come to an end by early Sunday morning. Over the remainder of the mountains, snow will be possible on Saturday and Saturday evening, but the accumulations will be light. It will be quite windy across the mountains Friday through Saturday night. Strong winds will also occur on the plains Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. Gusts to 40 to 50 mph will be likely.
