Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 408 AM MDT Tue Oct 30 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 344 AM MDT Tue Oct 30 2018 ...Winter weather expected from later today into tonight... Currently... Cold front moved through the area this morning. Temps at 2 am were in the 30s across NE CO while down here in SE CO temps were still in the 50s. Winds were still gusty across the southeast plains with gusts in the 40s being observed. On the regional scale, showers were noted stretching sw-ne across NW CO. Quite a bit of high clouds were noted over the region, with abundant wave clouds east of the southern Sangres. Short wave that will bring quite a bit of winter weather to the region was located over NV/CA and was moving east. Today and Tonight... Band of showers over NW CO will continue to drop southeast and expand with time as the day progresses, as the shortwave to our west moves east. Latest guidance shows that this weather system will move in a bit slower and a bit stronger (more well defined 700 mb circulation associated with it), and this means that precip will be a bit heavier and there will be more precip farther west. Winter storm warning criteria is likely for the mountains with borderline winter storm criteria possible for the valleys, and possibly N El Paso county. Based on latest high res guidance, expect snow showers to increase over the central mountains later this morning. Precip will also begin to develop over the Pikes Peak region by late this morning, although expect the heavier precip to develop by mid afternoon. Snow will likely develop over Monument Hill area by the 3-5 pm time frame, so travel across this region will become somewhat difficult due to the snow and reduced visibility. By 6 pm, anticipate bands of precip will be occurring generally north of a line from Wolf creek to south of Colorado Springs, with precip breaking out across the Sangres. Some of the guidance indicates a rather heavy band will extend from the Gunnison region, across and just south Monarch Pass , across Fremont county and into the Pikes Peak region. This band of heavy precip is associated with a 700 mb baroclinic boundary which will drop slowly south as the evening progresses. By later tonight, a fairly well developed 700 mb circulation will likely be located over the Pagosa Springs, CO region. 700 mb upslope will be occur north and east of this low, and this will allow for the potential for a heavy band of snow to extend from the low east- northeastward across south central and southeast CO. Snow over the higher terrain is near certain, what is not certain is how much snow will occur over the lower elevations. Guidance shows that it will likely snow all the way to 4500 feet on the plains, the problem is how much of it will actually impact the lower elevations? It has been warm over the region so pavement surfaces are still quite warm. Also, this system is not all that cold in the low levels; low temps tonight are likely going to be in the low 30s. What will favor accumulations is the snowfall rate. If it comes down heavy, which guidance suggest, then it will accumulate making for slushy conditions on road surfaces late this evening into tonight. Based on latest data, believe the best chance for accumulating snow will occur above 5000 feet across the region. Although precip is near certain for the region from late this afternoon into tonight, the amount of snow and intensity is still uncertain. If bands set up across the plains tonight and the precip is heavy, there may be some locally heavy accumulations of wet snow over some areas. In either case, the region is going to receive beneficial precip with this storm. As for QPF, 0.5 to 1" is likely in the s mtns. 0.3 to 0.6 along the I-25 corridor with 0.2 to 0.4 over the rest of the plains. San Luis valley should see 0.3 to 0.4, with the contdvd region seeing 0.25 to 0.5. Note these values are quite a bit less than what guidance suggest. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 344 AM MDT Tue Oct 30 2018 Models in decent agreement through Saturday with differences in the details for early next week. Ensemble spreads are fairly small through the weekend, with divergence into early next week leading to slightly lower forecast confidence. Wednesday...a strong upper level disturbance will be tracking south across Colorado during the day on Wednesday. Expect decent upslope flow from the surface through 700 mb during the early part of the day before flow transitions more northwesterly during the afternoon. This will effectively shut off precipitation from north to south by the late afternoon hours. Before the shut down, expect snow to remain banked up along the Eastern Mountains where winter weather highlights are in effect. The primary focus by Wednesday will be the southern I-25 corridor, Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Wet Mountains. Further north, the Rampart Range will see decent snowfall in the morning hours, with advisory criteria down into Colorado Springs and vicinity. As for Pueblo, tricky forecast. Temperatures and upslope flow will likely produce advisory snowfall totals for the western and southern parts of the county, while Pueblo proper may see very little in the way of snowfall. Further east, temperatures will be warm enough for areas of rainfall. As we move into the evening hours, snow will taper off across the area as drier northwest flow moves into the area. Wednesday night through Friday...broad northwest flow aloft is forecast to persist across the region through this period. Models in good agreement with light orographic snowfall over the Central Mountains with a few inches of accumulation expected on area peaks, generally above 10 kft. Warmer temperatures are expected over the lower elevations, with 50s to lower 60s across the Plains. Saturday and Sunday...model differences arise for the weekend with an upper disturbance and how the GFS and ECMWF want to handle it. The GFS has a much further west storm track, taking south across Colorado. This would bring another cold front and round of rain and snowfall to the area Saturday into Sunday across much of southern Colorado. The ECMWF has a further east storm track. This would keep light snowfall going over the Central Mountains, and limit precipitation chances for the Plains, keeping most activity well east in Kansas, along with warmer temperatures across the area. Monday and Tuesday...differences between the model continue into early next week. The GFS keeps broad northwest flow with embedded energy across Colorado. This would keep snow going along the Continental Divide and mountain areas early next week. The ECMWF develops a strong upper storm system and drops it south into eastern Colorado into the Central Plains Monday into Tuesday. This would bring precipitation to much of the area for early next week, much more so than the drier GFS. This will need to be monitored as we move into early next week. Mozley && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning) Issued at 344 AM MDT Tue Oct 30 2018 Winter storm is going to affect the region and snow is near certain. How this storm impacts aviation will be dependent on the intensity of the snowfall. Temps with this storm are relatively warm, and expect min temps tonight mainly in the upper 20s to low 30s, but it will be cold enough in the lower column for the precip to be all snow. If it is heavy, then there will be a better chance of accumulations, while if the snowfall rate is lighter, then most of the snow will melt as it hits the ground. Impacts with this event is simply going to depend on where (and if) heavier snow bands set up. \/Hodanish COS.... Snow is expected to be widespread across the region Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Although snow will fall as low as 4000 feet, most of the accumulating snow will occur above 5500 feet. The heaviest snow is expected to occur on the eastern slopes of the Pikes Peak Region, the Wet Mountains and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Over the remainder of the mountains, lighter amounts of snow are expected. I-25 in the Pikes Peak Region will likely see slushy conditions develop for the Tuesday evening commute. I-25 south of Pueblo to the New Mexico border will likely become snowpacked Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Mountain roadways that cross the Pikes Peak Region and southern mountains, such as Highway 24 and Highway 160, will become snowpacked Tuesday night and Wednesday. From Thursday into early next week, periods of snow will be possible at times in the mountains, especially the central mountains. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
