.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night. An upper low
circulation can be seen in WV imagery off the OR coast, and
continues to drop into the base of the upper trough entrenched
over the western CONUS. At the surface a cold front will
strengthen ahead of the upper low, and begin to lift northward as
the upper low drops into the Great Basin by Saturday morning.
Precip will begin tonight across the Central Mountains and
intensify between 00Z and 06Z. Snowfall amounts for the Central
Mountains will be as high as 12 to 15 inches through Saturday
night. With the highly amplified upper pattern, the cold front
will appear to stall, which is contributing to some of the heavier
snowfall. Stability indices support the mention of thunder this
afternoon and tomorrow afternoon, particularly over the mountains.
The winter storm watch was upgraded and expanded today based on
forecast snow amounts. The Central Mountain zones were upgraded
to a winter storm warning above 7000 ft, and the Upper Snake
Highlands, particularly west of Island Park are now under a winter
weather advisory above 6000 ft. Elsewhere, lesser snowfall amounts
are expected, and may even begin as rainshowers in the Snake Plain
and lower elevation valleys. Hinsberger

.LONG TERM...Sunday through Friday. Models are in MUCH better
agreement this morning through most of the extended range.
Confidence has gone up regarding timing of main features. First
upper low ejects shortwave/weakly closed low into central Plains
through Sunday night, with prior shortwaves rotated north and
flattening out through panhandle. This flattened shortwave slips
south again late Monday through Monday night, keeping threat for
weak showers mainly along Divide and WY border into Tuesday. Strong
northern low drops out of AK along BC Canada coast into Wednesday,
picking up Pacific low into a strongly amplified trough along the
coast. This pumps decent ridge into Idaho late Tuesday through
Tuesday night. Dry conditions are short lived with strong push of
moisture into the region by late Wednesday. There are some
differences with where the trough axis lays up along the coast into
the remainder of the forecast period, along with overall QPF amounts
over Idaho. The upshot though is a moderate warm up to just above
climo values, with what could be the wettest periods of this
forecast run. DMH

.AVIATION...Weak showers with MVFR/IFR conditions still linger along
WY border early this morning. This feature should lift northeast
enough to shift mostly out of the state, but KDIJ could see SHSN
linger a few hours after sunrise. Next feature already pushing
showers into SW Idaho this morning, so SHSN expected to arrive at
KSUN and KBYI by late morning. Weak instability this afternoon could
allow for a few lightning strikes, so will carry VCTS this afternoon
as well for these sites. Focus for precipitation will stay to the
western terminals for much of the day, finally shifting to the
remainder of the terminals late this afternoon or after 06Z.
Instability should be dissipated by then, but temperature profiles
should be supportive of SHSN despite forecast surface lows just
above freezing for KBYI/KPIH/KIDA. Given the weakly convective
nature of these showers, terminals could vary significantly between
VFR and IFR as the precipitation moves across the region tonight. DMH
