Downslope wind from the south has really dampened snow amounts
along the 15 corridor from Pocatello to Idaho Falls. The 86/84
corridors are getting good snow w/ blowing/drifting. Also the
south/eastern highlands as well. Will likely drop the advisories
for the Magic Valley/Snake Plain and central Idaho mountains
within the next couple of hours. Still watching a weak
circulation around the Burley area combined with the fact that the
wind in Pocatello has finally gone southwest, may still see some
additional light snow.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 148 PM MST Sat Feb 24 2018/

SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night. Very active short term
pattern ongoing. Pair of shortwaves continue to push through East
Idaho. First still lingering with light snow over the southeast
corner of the forecast area while second main shortwave still
pushing into western border of state. Broad area of moisture
associated with second wave pushing into central mountains and
precipitation expected to continue or spread across most of the
region remainder of the afternoon into early evening. Light
orographic snows also still continuing in eastern highlands. Brief
break in action occurring across upper Snake region between
shortwaves per VIS/IR sat imagery, but should be short lived as
next batch works across. Winds remain a concern as well this
afternoon and evening with observations showing gusts 25-35 in
many locations. Have kept blowing snow mention going. Second
shortwave axis drives across the region 03z-09z, which should
bring an end to much of the heavier snowfall, though is likely to
persist at least lightly along WY border under favored NW flow.
Will leave current advisory in place, though expect that it will
likely be able to drop early most if not all areas. Next system
works into central mountains mid to late afternoon Sunday,
spreading across the region Sunday night through Monday. Bulk of
snow falls in the central mountains Sunday night, and for the rest
of the area Monday. Gusty winds again expected, and could be
enough for another round of blowing/drifting. It is a close call
as to whether or not to extend current advisory into second event
given the short break between. However, given that this is truly a
second event related to a different upper feature, will opt to
use current headline only for this event and allow for second
issuance to second event. Snow amounts and wind speeds not
expected to be sufficient enough to warrant upgrade to a warning
at this time. Trough axis for second event shifts across the
region Monday night, so precip chances taper off overnight. DMH

LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Saturday. Upper troughing will
remain over the West with the GFS and ECMWF depicting a cutoff low
over California Tuesday morning. Models begin to eject the upper low
across the Desert Southwest while introducing a brief period of
ridging over the PAC NW. As we head into Wednesday night, moisture
begins to surge onshore once again ahead of a deep upper trough. GFS
actually develops an upper low off the WA/OR coast around this time,
but it rapidly fills in place of a deeper upper low coming in from
the Gulf of Alaska. Onset of precip will generally be Wednesday
night to Thursday morning over the Central Mountains, then spreading
to the rest of the forecast area through Thursday afternoon. We
should remain under a cyclonic flow aloft through the weekend,
keeping slight chance to chance PoPs over most of the forecast area.

AVIATION...A band of snow along Interstate 15 between KPIH and KIDA
may cause some LIFR conditions at those terminals, but main area of
snow should arrive around mid afternoon. The winds accompanying the
snow will also increase chances for blowing and drifting. Should see
snow ending late tonight, but blowing snow still a possibility with
winds 15 to 20 kts during the overnight hours across the Snake
