.SYNOPSIS...
A weak cold front will move into the region tomorrow morning, before
stalling just south of the region by Monday morning. A surface low
will propagate east along the front Sunday night into Monday
morning. A storm system will slowly progress through the region for
the mid-week period, pushing a warm front north on Tuesday followed
by a strong cold front late Wednesday. High pressure then briefly
passes through the region late in the new week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
930 pm update: Aside from some minor changes to hourly
temperatures and dew points to account for trends in
observations this evening, forecast is in good shape. Made no
significant changes at this time.

Previous discussion...

A nice afternoon in progress (for most) as surface high pressure
continues to shift off the Mid-Atlantic coast, allowing for a
southerly flow to occur. This southerly wind component though is a
bit gusty especially along the coast and this is resulting in
much cooler temperatures there.

As we go through tonight, an upper-level trough is forecast to slide
eastward across the Great Lakes and adjacent areas of Canada. This
will drive surface low pressure well to our north, however the
attached cold front will arrive into our western areas toward
daybreak. There is some warm air advection ahead of this front,
however the strongest short wave energy is well to our north as is
the main lift. The airmass moistens some, however it looks to not be
all that robust despite a 40-50 knot southwesterly low-level jet
arriving later tonight. There is a short wave embedded in the
southwest flow and timed near the low-level jet, however not sure
how much lift can result in actual showers. We continued with some
lower chance PoPs for showers across the west/northwest zones late
tonight, with a mention of sprinkles into the I-95 corridor toward
daybreak. Despite the lower dew points up across the Poconos
especially, light intensity of the precipitation may result in just
some light rain showers or sprinkles (if it were to precipitate to
the surface).

Otherwise, clouds increase and gradually lower from west to east
through the night. This along with some southerly flow occurring
(low-level jets arrival overnight) should keep temperatures from
dropping real fast through the evening. Hourly temperatures and low
temperatures are a multi-model and continuity blend.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
930 pm update: I increased temperatures a little bit in the
southeast half of the CWA based on latest hi-res and statistical
output. Front may struggle to move through the area, and
boundary-layer mixing may be sufficient to increase
temperatures more than previously progged.

Previous discussion...

As an upper-level trough amplifies some from the Great Lakes,
adjacent Canada and the Northeast, a surface cold front will
gradually settle south and east across our region. This may not
clear our far eastern and southern areas until later in the day or
it may start to dissipate as it will be weakening to begin with.
Looks like limited moisture with the front and the low-level jet
will be shifting offshore early, thus there does not appear to be
much in the way of forcing for organized ascent with it. As a
result, we carried a mention of possible sprinkles for a time
through mid morning from northwest to southeast.

Cloud cover to start the day across much of the region should
scatter out some from northwest to southeast as some drying starts
to work in. Temperatures are a blend of mostly the 2-meter
temperatures of several models as well as continuity. This places
higher maximum temperatures in the coastal plain and Delmarva where
boundary layer warmth should be maximized ahead of the weak cold
front. A wind shift to the west-northwest will occur behind the
weakening surface cold front with some increase especially late
morning through the afternoon.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Overview...Three main periods of potential active weather in the
long term. First, there is the potential for accumulating snow of a
few inches, across much of the area Sunday night into Monday morning
as a low propagates east along a slow moving front. Tuesday into
Wednesday, the region is likely to see two rounds of precipitation,
mostly rain, as first a warm front lifts through our region Tuesday
morning, with a cold front expected Wednesday morning. Finally late
in the week, Friday night into Saturday, there is a chance for a
fast moving clipper system to dig far enough south to bring
precipitation to our region.

Temperatures...aside from a 24 to 36 hour period Tuesday into
Wednesday when our region will be in the warm sector, temperatures
through the rest of the long term period look to be below normal.

Sunday night and Monday...A low will be tracking along the very slow
moving front. Depending on the model, this front is forecast to be
either south of our region (as the GFS depicts) or in Delmarva, and
far southeastern NJ (as depicted in the NAM). Placement of this
front will be key to not only precipitation types, but snow amounts
as well (snow ratios especially south of the I78 corridor could be
very low on the order of 5:1). North of the front, many models
depict an area of strong frontogenesis in the 09 to 15Z time frame,
resulting in a window when mesoscale snow banding will be possible.
The low however, is not expected to intensify or deepen until it
propagates east of the area. While it is not an especially impressive
low on the height fields at standard pressure levels, looking at the
1.5PV surface (dynamic tropopause), there appears to be strong
positive pressure advection during the period. Snow amount forecast
hasn't changed significantly, with generally 2 to 4 inches north and
west of the fall line, 1 to 2 in the I95 corridor, quickly dropping
below an inch south and east of I-95. If models trend closer to the
NAM solution with stronger frontogenesis, the snow amounts may need
to be increased along and north of the I78 corridor, while south of
a Philly to Atlantic City line, this scenario would mean less snow,
but more rain.

Tuesday and Wednesday...complex low pressure system is forecast to
propagate from the upper Mississippi Valley into New England. As it
does so, the associated warm front is expected to arrive in our
region Tuesday morning. The first round of precipitation (should be
mostly rain except in the Poconos and NW NJ) will arrive ahead of
and continue with the passage of the warm front. After that, it
looks like our region will be in the prime location for the dry
slot, if it develops, bringing at least several hours lull in
precipitation (and a dramatic warming trend), before a second round
of rain (all rain across the region) arrives with the approaching
cold front Wednesday. Given the low level warm air advection we are
expecting in the warm sector, should have enough instability for
thunderstorms with this round as well.

Thursday...surface high builds in bringing a brief opportunity for
tranquil weather.

Friday and Saturday...A clipper system digs southeast out of
southern Canada. It could dig far enough south to bring another
round of precipitation across our region, but there is considerable
uncertainty with the track of the low.

.AVIATION /02Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...VFR with CIGs developing/lowering in the next few
hours as a cold front approaches the area. May see some showers
near/northwest of RDG/ABE late tonight (perhaps a sprinkle
elsewhere). CIGs drop to around 5000 feet in proximity to the
front. Winds south to southwest 5 to 15 kts, with some
occasional gusts to 20 kts or so, especially this evening.
Directions will slowly transition to more westerly with time.
Moderate confidence.

Sunday...Generally VFR with CIGs 4000-7000 feet for most of the
day before some potential for scattering out and cloud bases
rising during the mid to late afternoon. May see a few sprinkles
or even a couple showers in the morning, but not expecting
impacts to aviation. Winds becoming west to northwest 10 to 15
kts with gusts to 20 kts or so possible as the cold front moves
across the area. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...
Sunday night and Monday...MVFR/IFR conditions in rain and snow.
Runway accumulations are possible especially for KRDG, KABE, and
KTTN. Snow tapers off Monday morning, and VFR conditions return
by Monday afternoon. North winds less than 10 kt. Moderate
confidence.

Monday night and Tuesday...Conditions lowering to MVFR or IFR
late Monday night in rain. May see conditions raise to VFR by
Tuesday morning. Winds shift to southerly behind a warm front.
Moderate confidence.

South to southwesterly flow will increase through tonight as a low-
level jet arrives, however mixing should be limited to some extent.
This will also boost the seas especially on the ocean where gusts
later tonight should be in the 25-30 knot range (highest across the
northern Atlantic coastal waters). A Small Craft Advisory remains in
effect from late this evening through late Sunday afternoon. Given a
more cross the bay direction, opted to not issue a Small Craft
Advisory for Delaware Bay and go with winds of 20 knots or less. The
winds will diminish during Sunday (especially afternoon) as they
start to shift from the west or west-northwest.

Outlook...
Sunday night and Monday...SCA conditions develop late Sunday
night through Monday afternoon, then conditions subside to sub-
SCA levels late Monday.

Tuesday through Thursday...SCA conditions late Tuesday and
continue through the period. There is a slight chance for gale
gusts especially Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

.CLIMATE...
With a cold and snowy March 2018 just about over, we have some
preliminary climate numbers to show just how unusual this month
has been. Keep in mind, these numbers are through March 29, but
no snow fell on March 30, and accumulating snow is not expected
prior to midnight tonight.

Regarding snowfall: March 2018 is in the Top 5 snowiest Marches
for all of our 4 snowfall climate sites.

Allentown: 20.7" is the 4th snowiest March on record.

Atlantic City: 9.6" is the is the 5th snowiest March on record.

Philadelphia: 15.2" is a tie with March 1914 as the 2nd
snowiest March on record.

Wilmington: 14.2" is the 2nd snowiest March on record.

In terms of average temperatures, although it has been
generally below normal, it does not rank as one of the Top 10
coldest Marches on record. The first day of March and the last
couple of days, in addition to what should happen today, will
keep us out of that distinction.
