.SYNOPSIS...
An arctic high extending into our area through tonight will weaken
during Wednesday. Low pressure develops off the Southeast coast
Wednesday, then rapidly intensifies as it tracks northward over the
far western Atlantic waters Wednesday night and Thursday. The
intense storm then moves into the Canadian Maritimes Thursday night
and Friday. Arctic high pressure builds into our region over the
weekend before shifting offshore late Sunday. Low pressure is
forecast to track to our north later Monday into Tuesday pulling a
cold front across our region.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Minor temperature and a few wind adjustments were needed for the
updates. Quiet and cold for the overnight. High pressure was
centered over the lower Ohio River Valley this afternoon. The
air mass will continue to slide eastward and it will bring our
region another mostly clear and very cold night.
A west wind around 5 to 10 MPH is expected to become light and
variable. Temperatures are forecast to drop into the 10 to 15 degree
range in our urban areas and along the immediate coast. Readings
should fall into the single digits elsewhere.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Cold dry air at the surface will remain in place for Wednesday. High
clouds are expected to overspread our region in advance of our next
weather system, especially in the afternoon.
A light and variable wind in the morning should settle into the east
to south quadrant in the afternoon around 5 MPH.
Highs should be mainly in the lower and middle 30s on the coastal
plain and in the 20s in areas to the northwest.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Summary...Rapidly intensifying Nor'easter tracks east of our coasts
late Wednesday night and Thursday; dangerous cold to follow for the
end of the week into the weekend; a warm-up early next week as a
clipper system currently looks to track to our north.
Synoptic Overview...A deep upper-level trough develops in the East
Wednesday night and Thursday as the northern and southern branches
phase. This results in rapid cyclogenesis off the East Coast. A
brutal arctic airmass follows this storm as a robust trough is in
the East. This trough exits for the second half of the weekend with
the flow briefly turning more zonal, allowing an erosion of the
arctic air. Significant warming may take place early next week as a
clipper type system currently is forecast to track to our north. The
main focus is on the Wednesday night through Thursday timeframe due
to a Nor'easter, however early next week could be tricky depending
on how quick the low-level arctic air erodes.
For Wednesday night and Thursday...Short wave energy in the northern
and southern streams are forecast to phase off the East Coast. This
results in rapid cyclogensis east of Florida along a robust
baroclinic zone, then this storm rapidly intensifies as it tracks
northward. This storm should be a quick mover given no real
established blocking downstream, however the rapid deepening and
associated lift will result in an expanding precipitation shield.
Much of the guidance shows a dual or coupled 250 mb jet structure on
Thursday with at least parts of our area within the right entrance
region of the northern jet segment. This should tend to enhance the
lift, although the speed of the system may end up limited this true
potential. While the guidance overall tended to shift westward some
with the storm track which brings the precipitation shield also
westward, there should be a sharp drop off in the snow as one goes
westward across our forecast area. This adds more of a challenge to
the snowfall forecast. In addition, the upper-level trough takes on
a negative tilt Thursday however this may occur to late to really
pull the precipitation farther west. As a result, we stayed close to
the WPC guidance after coordinating with them and also our
neighboring offices.
An examination of the frontogenesis fields especially in the 800-700
mb layer reveals quite the deformation axis in some guidance just
east of our coast Thursday as the surface low rapidly intensifies
while it tracks northward. There are other areas of frontogenetic
forcing over land, however if an intense band does develop this may
result in an area of subsidence or much lighter snow on either side.
Some guidance is hinting at this. Just how close to the coast this
gets will be very important as enhanced snowfall rates will occur
within any banding, however it appears the strongest forcing remains
offshore. It sure is a little to close for comfort though, and given
enough signals among the model guidance we will continue with a
Winter Storm Watch for mostly later Wednesday night through Thursday
for all of our coastal counties/zones. A Winter Weather Advisory may
be needed for a least a tier of counties/zones west of the watch
area.
The wind in combination with the cold is also a concern. The
offshore track should allow for no precipitation type issues, thus
all snow is expected. While some warming may occur prior to the
surface low passing our latitude, snow combined with increasing wind
will pose a blowing and drifting threat. This could be significant
especially if higher snow amounts occur and the winds ramp up
quickly also also while snow is still falling. This will need to be
monitored closely, but for now did include a mention of possible
considerable blowing and drifting snow in the Winter Storm Watch
area.
As the storm quickly moves to our northeast during Thursday
afternoon, northwest winds may gust to around 40 mph. We did
increase the wind and wind gusts quite a bit across the area.
Another round of arctic air then starts to invade our area from the
northwest. There could be some flurries or snow showers across the
northwest areas Thursday night.
For Friday through Sunday...This time frame will be dominated by
arctic air and potentially dangerous cold. Some moderation is
expected Sunday however as the major upper-level trough lifts out.
Until then, gusty northwesterly winds will combine with very cold
air temperatures leading to potentially dangerously cold wind chills
across the entire area. Looks like a Wind Chill Advisory and even a
Wind Chill Warning will be needed for Friday night and Saturday
night, and the extent of this will depend on how much the winds stay
up. Overall, a very very cold time frame followed by some
improvement on Sunday as the arctic high starts to shift offshore.
For Monday and Tuesday...As the flow initially is zonal ahead of the
next system, warm air advection occurs as high pressure is to our
east. As of now, low pressure is forecast to track to our north with
a cold front moving through Monday night. Some guidance however is
farther south with the primary surface low development, and if this
occurs the warming may be limited. This pattern introduces the
potential of some mixed/icy precipitation to even some rain as
enough warming should take place. More specifics as we get
closer.

.AVIATION /09Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Tonight...VFR. Mainly clear with a west wind 5 to 10 knots becoming
light and variable.
Wednesday...VFR with an increase in high clouds. Light and variable
wind becoming east to south around 5 knots.
OUTLOOK...
Wednesday night and Thursday...Snow is anticipated to develop later
Wednesday night and continue Thursday for ACY and MIV and also back
to TTN, PHL/PNE and ILG. There is less confidence if any snow occurs
at ABE and RDG. The heavier snow should be closer to the coast. As a
result, conditions should lower to MVFR and IFR especially for MIV
and ACY. North to northwest winds increase, with gusts 30-40 knots
possible. Conditions improve later Thursday afternoon and evening,
however gusty winds persist.
Friday and Saturday...VFR overall, however northwest winds will
be gusty. The winds should diminish though Saturday night.
Sunday...VFR overall. West to southwest winds mostly 5-10 knots.

.MARINE...
High pressure will build across the coastal waters of New Jersey and
Delaware from the west for tonight and Wednesday.
A final surge of 25 knot wind gusts is expected to affect the
coastal waters of New Jersey into tonight. As a result, we will
leave the Small Craft Advisory in place there until 2:00 AM. We have
extended the Freezing Spray Advisory for the coastal waters of New
Jersey to coincide with the Small Craft Advisory. Wind gusts are
forecast to remain near or below 20 knots on Delaware Bay and on the
coastal waters of Delaware.
The wind is forecast to swing around to the east and southeast on
Wednesday at speeds around 10 knots.
OUTLOOK...
Wednesday night through Friday...A northwest gale is expected as
rapidly strengthening low pressure tracks east of the Delaware and
New Jersey coastal waters and up to Atlantic Canada. Moderate
to potentially heavy freezing spray.
Friday night and Saturday...Northwest gales possible Friday night
into Saturday, then winds should diminish some during Saturday.
Moderate to perhaps heavy freezing spray.
Sunday...The conditions are anticipated to be below Small Craft
Advisory criteria.

Arctic cold will continue its hold on the region through Monday
morning with what we think will be increasing adverse impact on the
infrastructure as one of the most persistent cold outbreaks in
recent memory extends through Sunday January 7.
This outbreak has already been associated with several daily cold
(both maximum and minimum) temperature records over the past week,
including a record low at Georgetown, DE (GED) and Reading, PA (RDG)
and a record cold maximum at Allentown (ABE) on New Years Day.
Today we have a new record low at GED (7 so far) and Reading 2F from
equaling a record low.
Additional record lows and record cold maximum temperatures should
be set Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

We are now categorically confident that high temperatures will
remain at or below 32F at ABE PHL ILG RDG TTN through Sunday January
7. (Atlantic City is in doubt today, whether the max is 32 or 33F).
The cold is already impacting infrastructure including ice in
bays/inlets (inclusive of DE Bay) broken water mains/heating systems.
We think this final shot of what we'll term as persistent severe
cold for our area (more often occurs northern tier states bordering
Canada) will cause a considerable increase in failed marginally
maintained heating systems/water main breaks/car problems. We think
there will be increased cancellations for school sending districts
where most of the travel to school is by foot. Once the thaw
develops next week...potholes and some ice break up problems may
develop.
We advise everyone to take this upcoming Friday-Sunday frigid
outbreak very seriously. Have safety plans in place including a
stash of warm clothes in the car in case of a rural location break
down and certainly plenty of fuel for well maintained home
and facility heating systems.
Some uncertainty exists as to when the temperature will exceed 32F
early next week but for now our forecast is that this will occur
Monday.
So, since odds strongly favor temps maintaining aob 32F through
Sunday Jan 7...here is a perspective on how this will rank in our
official records.
I want to lead with the following: In a short 20 year period of
accessible history...Mount Pocono has never recorded a single day of
subzero. It has only 2 consecutive days of sub 10F. There is a goo d
chance Mount Pocono will remain at or below zero from about 7 PM
Friday through about 10 AM Sunday. That will also include some wind
chill of 30 below.
PHL 12 consecutive days would be ranking 4th longest (tied) and
coldest such period since February 1979. The last time PHL was
above freezing was 1955z/26th = 255PM EST.
ABE 13 consecutive days would be ranking 4th longest (tied) and
coldest since February 1979. The last time ABE was above freezing
was 1835z/25th=135PM EST.
RDG 13 consecutive days would be ranking 7th longest and coldest
since December 2000. the last time RDG was above freezing was
