.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure shifts to our east during today. A cold front slowly
arrives from the west during Friday, however low pressure tracks
along it Friday night into Saturday. As low pressure moves into New
England Saturday afternoon a cold front sweeps across our region.
Arctic high pressure then builds into our area later Sunday into
Monday. Low pressure and a cold front should then move through
on Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
High pressure will continue moving eastward out to sea tonight
giving way to weak southerly/southeasterly flow and winds. The
southerly flow will bring a slow increase in moisture as well
with clouds increasing from southwest to northeast this evening.
Temperatures may not fall much tonight given a considerably more
amount of warming is occuring several thousand feet up. We also
have a snowcover to consider as well, so confidence on the
temperatures tonight is not the highest. Low temperatures look
to occur in the evening then slowly rise overnight with most
locations in the 30's.

Weak isentropic lift needed for precipitation formation looks to
stay north of the region through tonight. If any stray light
showers or sprinkles do reach the Southern Poconos and NW NJ
toward sunrise, very light freezing precipitation would be a
potential issue. Ice is not expected at this time.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM THURSDAY/...
Thursday will continue to see moisture on the increase with an
approaching cold front and several low pressure systems over the
Ohio Valley. Fairly good agreement is present to keep the
majority of Thursday dry but some areas of light rain may clip
the Lehigh Valley and southern Poconos regions by late in the
afternoon. Any QPF looks very light through the afternoon.

Temperatures look to be the biggest forecast challenge. Low
clouds look to be prominent further inland with a fair amount of
sunshine along the coast. Modeled 925 mb temperatures would
yield highs into the 60's. Confidence is higher the cloud cover
and any lingering snow keeps the temperatures quite a bit lower
northwest of Philadelphia than what those 925 mb values would
give with most spots in the 40's and low 50's. Coastal sections
particularly from Atlantic City to Georgetown may realize the
warmer temperatures close to 60. Forecast is a middle of the
road between the warmer ECMWF MOS and the cooler MAV guidance.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Summary...Significant warming into the start of the weekend with a
few rounds of some rain (some heavy rain possible especially Friday
night into Saturday); much colder for Sunday through Tuesday.

Synoptic Overview...As a sharp upper-level trough slides eastward
from the Midwest and Gulf Coast states Thursday into Friday, an
upper-level ridge shifts more offshore of the East Coast. A strong
short wave within the aforementioned trough swings northeastward
into the eastern Great Lakes and northeast Saturday (becomes
negatively tilted), then the entire upper-level trough amplifies
into the East through the weekend. While the trough may weaken for a
time early next week, its presence should be maintained in the East.
Deep moisture transport will occur ahead of a storm system Friday
into Saturday, then much colder air returns from Sunday onward.

For Thursday...An upper-level trough from the Midwest to the
southern Plains moves eastward with southern energy becoming
dominant. It is this energy that will develop surface low pressure
along a strengthening baroclinic zone. Downstream of this feature,
warm air advection will continue across the East as deep
southwesterly flow transports warmer and more moist air. The flow
may back slightly to more southerly Thursday night in response to
the incoming sharpening upper-level trough. As this occurs, theta-e
advection increases and a rapid increase in the precipitable water
is forecast at night. While some rain may try and develop during the
day especially for our western areas, the lift looks weak. We await
the arrival of stronger flow and a surge in the precipitable water
at night to increase the isentropic lift, therefore an area of rain
should move through much of the area. As a result, a quick increase
in the PoPs occurs Thursday night. Given the strengthening flow,
increase in warm air advection and moisture transport, temperatures
at night should tend to hold steady or even rise overnight. Where
the dew points rise into the 50s at night, some fog should develop.

For Friday and Saturday...A dynamic setup comes into play as
southern stream energy rolls northeastward and supports a surface
low along a strengthening baroclinic zone. This front will be
nearing our area late Friday, however it should slow eastward due to
low pressure tracking along it. An initial burst of warm air
advection, precipitable water surge and therefore enhanced lift
should shift to our northeast toward midday Friday. As a result,
rain should tend to taper for the afternoon. The next round, which
may be the heaviest, arrives Friday night and Saturday morning as
surface low pressure tracks over or just northwest of our area.
Large scale ascent becomes maximized Friday night and early Saturday
morning as the upper-level trough takes on a negative tilt, and with
a precipitable water surge to about 1.5 inches areas of heavier rain
should occur. Some guidance shows weak elevated instability
developing Friday night, however it may not be enough to allow for
lightning production although it may enhance the rainfall rates for
a time. As a result, we left out a thunder mention. The rapid
warming and increase in dew points will tend to break up ice in the
waterways and allow it to move. Looks like 1-2 inches of rain may
occur and we should be able to handle this despite the cold ground
and areas of ice on many waterways. We will continue to monitor this
though. Fog, possibly locally dense, may be an issue for a time
Friday night as dew points surge ahead of low pressure.

Temperatures should rise some Friday night despite rain arriving as
low-level warm advection increases ahead of surface low pressure. An
interesting scenario may develop for the southern Poconos early
Saturday morning as some guidance rushes in cold low-level air, and
before the warm layer aloft cools indicates some freezing rain
and/or potential. This will depend on the track of the surface low
and therefore how quick the colder air starts to arrive. Given the
incoming colder air, we did lower the temperatures a little faster
across the northwest areas early Saturday however did not add in
freezing rain. Otherwise, rain should end toward midday Saturday as
low pressure moves into New England. Temperatures should peak in the
morning then fall in the afternoon as cold air advection
strengthens. It appears that the precipitation associated with the
comma-head remains to our northwest as more of a dry slot may end up
overspreading much of our area. It will be much colder Saturday
night.

For Sunday and Monday...Low pressure shifts into the Canadian
Maritimes Sunday with strong cold air advection across our region.
It will be much colder as a result with high temperatures in the 20s
to lower 30s Sunday and probably a little colder on Monday. High
pressure builds into the area later Sunday allowing for less wind
then. A clipper type system tracking near or just south of the Great
Lakes Monday will approach our area Monday night with some increase
in clouds.

For Tuesday...A clipper type system is forecast to pivot across the
area, with the initial weak surface low near the eastern Great Lakes
with perhaps redevelopment occurring east of New Jersey. This system
may have limited moisture, although some guidance shows an area of
organized lift that generates some snow. For now, included slight
chance to low chance PoPs for this time frame.

.AVIATION /20Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight: VFR through tonight with winds under 10 knots. High confidence.

Thursday: Ceilings start to lower around sunrise with MVFR/IFR
ceilings for all terminals except KACY and possibly KMIV. Some
uncertainty is still present on how quick the ceilings drop and
how low. Right now most locations look to hover between MVFR and
IFR for most of the day. Winds will stay under 10 knots and any
areas of light rain look to hold off till later TAF periods.
Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Friday and Saturday...MVFR/IFR conditions due to low clouds, fog and
periods of rain. The rain ends toward midday Saturday with the
conditions improving as a cold front moves through.

Sunday...VFR overall.

.MARINE...
Quiet tonight and Thursday on both Delaware bay and the coastal waters.
Waveheights will be around a foot or two into Thursday but then
rise a little late in the day as a cold front and low pressure
system begin to approach the region. Winds under 10 knots and an
SCA is not anticipated through Thursday. High confidence.

Outlook...

Friday and Saturday...Small Craft Advisory conditions are expected,
especially on the Atlantic coastal waters. This period will start
with gusty southwesterly winds, with an abrupt shift to
northwesterly winds later Saturday. Since the airmass will be much
warmer, the stronger winds are not anticipated to mix down and
therefore gusts should remain below gale force. Fog may be an issue
for navigation through Friday night.

Sunday...Small Craft Advisory conditions may linger for the
morning.

.HYDROLOGY...
Low stream flows are probably going to allow most rivers to
escape substantial problems from combined rainfall, snow melt
and ice movement late this week. Ice movement in particular
will be monitored and a more detailed discussion of
possibilities will follow after 330 PM this afternoon.
