Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic high pressure located over the northern Great Plains
this afternoon will build to the south and east. The high will
continue to influence our region into Wednesday. Low pressure is
forecast to develop off the Southeast coast on Wednesday. The
low is expected to intensify rapidly as it moves northward over
the waters off the Middle Atlantic and New England coasts on
Wednesday night and Thursday. Cold high pressure is anticipated
to build into our region from the west for Friday and the
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/...
Last 2017 update: Mount Pocono has hit the threshold for wind
chill warning criteria; however, the rest of the county (and
adjacent Carbon County) remain(s) well below warning criteria.
For now, will hold off on issuing a short-fused warning. I did,
however, lower wind chills the rest of the night in the northern
CWA, where winds are a little stronger (particularly at higher
elevations).

For the rest of the area, wind chills are generally below zero
now, though winds are becoming marginal. Nevertheless, the
bitter cold conditions combined with NYE festivities support
continuation of the wind chill advisory. Temperatures needed
little adjustment at the current time, but I did lower the
minimum temperatures a degree or two, with the expectation that
the lighter than forecast winds will likely allow more efficient
radiational cooling later tonight.

Previous discussion...

Wind chill values in the Poconos have dropped below -20 as of 9
PM. Previous forecast was on track, but adjusted temperatures
down slightly to match current observations.

Temps will bottom out below zero across the southern Poconos
and far NW NJ. Elsewhere, single digits can be expected. With
northwest winds 5 to 15 mph, expect windchills as low -20 across
the southern Poconos and NW NJ, as low as -15 across the Lehigh
Valley, and as low as -10 below elsewhere. Needless to say that
it will be dangerously cold for any outside NYE festivities.

Albeit cold, no precipitation is expected.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
The expansive Arctic surface high will be in play once again
tomorrow. A mid-level shortwave that will track across the Great
Lakes could touch off a couple snow showers across our far
northwestern zones later in the day. Otherwise, dry conditions
can be expected.

Temps will be similar to today. Winds will be similar as well.
The result...windchills won't climb above zero across the
Poconos once again. Expect single digits windchills all day
elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Arctic high pressure is forecast to be centered over the lower
Missouri River Valley on Monday night. The air mass is expected
to continue building to the south and east through the middle of
the new week and it will bring very cold and dry conditions to
our region.

The guidance has been fairly consistent in bringing the only
chance of above freezing temperatures during the new week to our
far southern and southeastern counties on Wednesday afternoon.
Highs are forecast to be in the 32 to 35 degree range from far
southern New Jersey to central and southern Delaware and the
adjacent counties of eastern Maryland at that time.

The expected system off the coast continues to look
increasingly menacing for the period from Wednesday night into
Thursday. We have increased the chance of snow upward a bit. The
low is forecast to intensify rapidly as it lifts northward well
off the Middle Atlantic coast on Wednesday night and Thursday
morning.

Another arctic high is anticipated to build into our region
from the west for Friday and the weekend. The air mass is
expected to be even colder than the one currently impacting our
region. The intense cold in combination with a gusty northwest
wind due to the storm system departing to our northeast should
result in very low wind chill values for Thursday night into
Friday. Wind chill values may drop to
-10 to -20 in much of our region at that time, possibly falling
around -30 in the elevated terrain up north.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...VFR with northwest winds 5 to 15 kts. High confidence.

Monday...VFR, though a SCT-BKN cloud deck 5-10 kft will probably
develop during the day. Northwest winds 7 to 15 kts with
occasional gusts to 20 kts or so. High confidence.

OUTLOOK...
Monday night through Wednesday...Mainly VFR.

Wednesday night and Thursday...A chance of snow with conditions
possibly lowering to MVFR and IFR.

Thursday night and Friday...Mainly VFR.

Last 2017 update: Gale conditions are in full swing on Lower
Delaware Bay and the adjacent Atlantic waters. Unsurprisingly,
model performance remains very poor. Current gale warning looks
good.

I will likely extend the freezing spray advisory with the 330 am
update, as moderate accretion rates will likely either continue
or return after a brief downward trend Monday afternoon through
Monday night. I am also considering a gale watch for Lower
Delaware Bay and the adjacent Atlantic waters Monday night,
given similar conditions to what has prompted gales the previous

Tonight...Similar to last night, some localized gale conditions
have developed on the lower Delaware Bay. Thus, have issued a
gale warning through the overnight hours for the lower Delaware
Bay and adjacent coastal waters. Otherwise, small craft advisory
conditions will continue. Moderate freezing spray has already
been observed, and is expected to continue at least into Monday
morning. Average confidence.

Monday...SCA conditions expected across all waters with gusts
in the 20 to 30 kt range. Freezing spray is expected.

OUTLOOK...
Monday night and Tuesday...A Small Craft Advisory is in effect
for a northwest wind gusting to 25 to 30 knots. Light to
moderate freezing spray.

Tuesday night through Wednesday night...No marine headlines are
anticipated. Light freezing spray.

Thursday through Friday...A northwest gale is expected to
develop as strong low pressure passes well to the east of the
Delaware and New Jersey coastal waters and up to Atlantic
Canada. Light to moderate freezing spray.
