What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Aug 26, 9:17 PM EDT, 5 hours 41 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Aug 26, 9:17 PM EDT, 5 hours 41 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 917 PM EDT Sun Aug 26 2018 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure over the Southeast U.S. will slide offshore tonight, then will remain anchored off the Southeast Coast through the middle of this week. A cold front approaches Wednesday night and slowly works its way through the region Thursday and Thursday night, then becomes nearly stationary south of Delmarva into the weekend. Several weak waves of low pressure will slide along the boundary as high pressure passes to the northeast. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/... No big changes to the forecast overnight. A surface trough will remain in place across the Mid Atlantic through tonight, while high pressure remains across the southeast states and offshore of the southeast coast. General west to southwest winds this evening are expected to become light and variable or calm overnight for most places. Partly to mostly cloudy skies this evening will continue to clear out some overnight, although there will likely be some cloud cover through the night, so we will keep it partly cloudy for most places overnight. With an increase in dewpoints, there will continue to be a chance of patchy fog, so we will keep this in the forecast. Under partly cloudy skies, temperatures are expected to dip down into the low to mid 60s in the far north, and only into the low 70s in the far south, and in the urban areas. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/... The same two high pressure systems and surface trough will continue to influence the area weather through Monday. With moisture continuing to build up over the area on a SW flow, the humidity will be more noticeable compared to Sunday, and scattered showers and perhaps a thunderstorm could pop up just about anywhere during the afternoon. Wind speeds will start out slow, but should increase during the late morning or early afternoon hours High temperatures in the low 90s are expected everywhere except in the mid to upper 80s in the Lehigh Valley, central New Jersey, and points north. The shore will also be a little cooler. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... Surface high pressure remains anchored off the Southeast U.S. coast for most of the new week. Meanwhile, 500 mb high will move over VA/NC on Tuesday, then slides offshore on Wednesday. Persistent SW flow around the surface high will usher an increasingly hot and humid airmass into the region, with 1000-500 mb thicknesses approaching 580 dam. This results in surface dewpoints well in the 70s, and daytime highs in the low to mid 90s. Based on latest BUFKIT profiles, there may be enough mixing both afternoons to cut dewpoints down a bit, but not by much. Generally from 74-76 to 70-72, but this should be enough to keep max heat index values below 105. Heat Advisories will be needed for the I-95 corridor and parts of inland NJ south of the Turnpike and parts of the Philly suburbs in southeast PA. Think areas generally north of I-78 would be just below Heat Advisory criteria of 100 degrees, and the Delmarva and extreme southeast NJ will fall below the Heat Advisory criteria of 105 degrees. A cold front then approaches on Wednesday as high pressure offshore slides a bit farther east. That front will slowly work its way south through the region on Thursday, but will probably not make it through the region until Thursday night. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will move into the area Thursday afternoon ahead of the cold front, and this will help knock temps down a bit, generally into the upper 80s to low 90s. The heat index may approach 100, though, despite the cooler temps due to increased low level moisture. From there, cold front becomes nearly stationary south of Delmarva through the weekend. Several weak waves of low pressure will slide along the boundary as high pressure passes to the north and east. Will carry low chance PoPs due to uncertainty of how each system will affect the region. Warm weather may return by Labor Day. && .AVIATION /01Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...VFR conditions expected to continue through tonight, even with partly cloudy skies overnight. The only exception would be some patchy fog late in the night/toward daybreak Monday where visibilities may drop to MVFR levels, especially MIV and RDG, but possible ABE and TTN. South to southwest around 5-10 knots early will likely become light and variable or calm for most places overnight. .Monday...Mainly VFR. Any fog will burn off quickly, then a W to SW flow is expected to develop in the 5 to 10 KT range. OUTLOOK... Monday night through Thursday...Mainly VFR. Patchy radiational fog possible at KRDG/KABE/KMIV late Monday night and late Tuesday night, but chances are low. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible Wednesday and Wednesday night, then scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Thursday as a cold front moving into the region. S-SW winds each morning will likely shift out of the west during the afternoon hours for the I-95 terminals. Wind speeds generally 10 kt or less. High forecast confidence. && .MARINE... Tonight and Monday...Generally sub-SCA conditions expected. With a south to southwest flow across the region, seas will increase from around 2 feet today to 3 feet tonight and Monday. A few gusts could approach 25 KT, but these gusts are expected to be occasional, at worst. OUTLOOK... Monday night through Thursday...Winds and seas should generally remain below SCA criteria. S-SW winds will be 10 kt or less at night, then increase to 15-20 kt in the afternoon. A cold front works its way south through the waters on Thursday. RIP CURRENTS...With winds forecast to be south to southwest 5-10 mph, and seas forecast to be around 2 feet with a 6-9 second period, there is a low risk for the development of dangerous rip currents on Monday. Winds may increase to 15 mph later in the afternoon, but this should not have a significant effect on the rip current formation risk. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. NJ...None.
